Out of Brazil (Santa Catarina State)

Univille University's Project Toninhas ..
(Biologists studying an endangered species of Dolphin off the Southern Coast of South America)

Were surprised/stunned ..
When in their observations ..
They came upon and sighted .. within the dolphin community they were studying ..

a ALBINO baby in the group (which is nearby one of the adults of the pod)
Species name for this dolphin group is pontoporia blainvillei species

(Brazilians call this the Toninhas dolphin)
(Argentinians/Uruguayans call this the La Plata or Franciscana dolphin)

The baby has a white body with pinkish fins ..
the species itself nurses the young calves until they are around 6 months of age
Then the calf is still dependent on the mom until around a year of age.
(The species is known for its long, thin snout that can easily find itself entangled in fishing nets)

(This albino calf was first spotted in October, and first photographed in November)

.... It's a white dolphin with a recessive gene. The giant bug was more interesting.

Sure doesn't look like an Albino especially in Brazil. I guess someone isn't up on Pink Dolphins. I've seen many of them in the Amazon. Looks like some dolphins were fooling around.

Sadly without its natural coloring for protection as well as to be able to find food ... the little guy's chances aren't good.

Is it a breed or a freak of nature?

I have heard of them ... and that is their environment so I would suspect they would thrive. This white albino is not the same as it has a natural colored mom from what I can see from the pic. Usually this is a malfunction in the skin pigmentation that can even cause them to burn where this is not a natural occurance.

Many of the pink dolphins have gray or pink parents. Grays were there just like the pinks were and some were of both color. It's very easy if they are in Brazil to have cross bred. If it was the outback Africa or Russia someone then no but in the same area of the world where they all hang out then there is too many pink dolphins around.......yes with gray parents.

The Amazon is pretty vast....I think dolphins know how to swim.

So they are more an inland variety. Interesting.

Albino animals frequently don't survive very long in the wild. I certainly hope this one makes it and lives a full life.
