Several High Schools already have such a policy in place and several more are instituting random drug testing...students who fail these drug tests are subject to being banned from extracurricular activites...to suspension...

I think my school is safe though. We just spent millions of dollars to put down turf, rip it up because it was the wrong one, and started making more gyms.

Doesn't that violate one's right to unwarranted search and seizure?

These kids are not applying for a job, they are there to learn. It would be better to do back ground checks and drug testing on the teachers. Why, must the children have to deal with this ? We pay schools to teach children, not drug test them.
    Have a nice day !

This has all the ingredients for disaster. First off, what are we hoping to attain here? This is a half baked notion that with strict enforcement, the school might decrease substance use. It is destined to fail with the children being the big losers. The school's job is to teach knowledge. Children are compelled by law to go to school, it is not voluntary. Then, with random tests and a significant percentage of false positives, regardless of behavior, good or bad, which suggests random is less than random, and could easily be used as a threat from administration, the children are judged "compliant" or not, and those that "fail" are kept from just the sort of activities that encourage them away from doing substances. Which substances are we to test? Cold remedies? Alcohol? Weed? Heroin? these tests cost money, and why do we not test the teachers and administrators too? They should not be teaching if they ever tried any substances, by this criteria. Why should only children be without rights in that school district, let us test the parents, if they step foot on the campus, that is where the these people should be focusing their attention, and drag them to jail, so the kids can be shipped to foster homes, and then everyone will be happy?

Let us teach by good example, rather than legal draconian measures that would do nothing but alienate the people we most want to protect. The children.

This is a toughie and it 's both good and bad.I think it should be up to the schools if there is suspicion of drug use by a student or alcohol use.

Only drug test the kids that participate in extracurricular activities. Anything else is an invasion of privacy.

Can't say I agree...I don't think students involved in extracurricular activities should be held to a higher standard.

Kids that participate in extracurricular activities are already put on a higher standard since participating in activities looks better on the college application than N/A. They volunteer for those activities and those activities should have waivers. I'd hate to see a kid on debate team that smokes once or twice a year end up ineligible for something down the road.

Plus you have many kids taking addictive drugs like ritalin to help them focus on tests and studying. Those kids don't have a problem but cheated the system to get their hands on the drug legally. They would be excluded but may be at greater risk.

School age kids are not in school to fart around on the taxpayers dime! If they're getting high during the school years they more than likely have no interest in an education, kick em to the curb!

I agree....if they are not interested in an education, kick em' out. Perhaps a dose of reality would smarten them up.

Unfortunately most of them know the nanny state will give them an EBT card that they can use to support their stupidity!

Isn't that the truth. Just one factor contributing to the dumbing down of America.
