Would you say no to the Vice President?

One New River Valley business owner turned Vice President Joe Biden down. To see video of the story, click here.

This might happen more than you think from both political parties, most businesses just don't talk about it. The owner of "Crumb and Get It" - did.

Chris McMurray's bakery has been open only since May, barely three months.

Wednesday morning, advance teams for Vice President Joe Biden walked in.

"I approached her she said Joe Biden is coming to town today," McMurray said.

"Crumb and Get It" is a mom and pop store. Literally. Chris and his wife Kelly run the place and need all the business they can get.

McMurray said the Vice President's entourage got to the point and made its pitch.

"She said they have selected 'Crumb and Get It" to be his stop on his way to Blacksburg and was wondering if that was ok."

Here's the part that might make other business owners crazy.

"This is an opportunity of a lifetime but essentially I said 'No offense to you or the campaign but I just decline you guys coming in here. At that time she said 'Are you sure? There's going to be a lot of press, a lot of activity,’" McMurray said.

Why in the world would a new business owner say "no" to a photo op with the Vice President of the United States?

McMurray said it was President Obama's recent remarks about small business and who built what.

"Very simply, ‘you didn't build that’” McMurray said. “Speaking of small businesses and entrepreneurs all across this country and actually last night my wife was up all night. No sleep, she's worked a full 24 hours."

When "Crumb and Get It" said 'no', “River City Grill,” just around the corner, said 'yes' and has the pictures to prove it, and didn't care about the politics.

"If you want to throw in some libertarians as well that's fine too. Stop in as well,” Chris Bell said. “Just bring your money. Sure, right!

Back at the bakery, a couple of guys said they'd hoped to see Biden and didn't care that the VP had been turned away.

"I mean it really doesn't matter to me. Everyone has their own views so I love the food here anyway. I agree. Everybody's different so I could care less," said Spenser Critterton of Radford.

Here's the back story, we’re told that shortly after Crumb and Get It told Biden’s advance people 'no' -- the secret service walked in and told Chris McMurray ''Thanks for standing up and saying 'no' -- then they bought a whole bunch of cookies and cupcakes.

McMurray said he's hoping folks will understand he just didn't want to be part of a photo op for an administration whose policies he doesn’t agree with.

I am glad this business owner turned the oppotunity down. If it had been accepted, then Biden would have wanted to shake the owners hand, get them to say things positive about him and Obama. It would mean agreeing with the campaign, as the owner put it, after the remarks Obama made about " You didn't build that." I'm glad they didn't take it just to get some exposure and the O'mighty dollar. Some things are not worth it.

It would have been a double edged sword. Sure, people would have seen the photos, but it may have gotten some to come and others to avoid the business based on the politics and the effects would be long lasting. For time to come the business would ba associated with Obama.

I think that there has been enough publicity about the President's remarks about building a small business that these two owners should have know that the President's remarks were edited by the GOP to appear to be a slap against small business owners. If you listen to the President's remarks in total, you get a who different interpretation from what the GOP is trying to sell. I would ask the owners to go on line and get the full statement and they will see that the meaning being spread by Romney is a lie.

I would say no to the Vice President and President if they wanted in my home or business. It is the business owners right not to allow individuals into their business if they so wish. I hope his business flourishes because he took a stand against this elitist administration of morons.

Biden is NOT the VP since Obama is not the POTUS. Biden IS a "Crumb" as is Obama.

Yes, if I was a business owner I would say no to both the President and the Vice President because they would make me lose business through out the day because of all of the secret service agents that allegedly need to be around both of these idiots.

LOL, Michelle would like it if the local burger joints would refuse service to her husband, for his late night burger runs. Wonder why the business owner turned down Biden's business? Cupcakes? Cookies? Wonder why the S.S. didn't go for donuts? Guess they wanted to be different from ordinary cops.

I thought that was GREAT. I am PROUD of him. and he probably got MORE publicity for DARING to stand up to Biden, than he would have if he let him come in. We sure need more with that kind of a backbone!!!

The only way I'd let Biden into my shop would be if they'd give me an hour to call 100 of my closest friends and tell 'em "C'mon over, we're havin' a party and I've got 'Squirrelly Joe, the Fourth Stooge' on hand for some laughs!"

Good for the Secret Service, although I would suspect it would be individual agents and their thanks, rather the entire bureau. Every private business has the right to say no to that sort of visit, and to be honest, it's awesome they stood up for their views. A lot of people (that bar owner perhaps) would gladly throw themselves under the bus for the almighty dollar.

Its a business decision. They shut down your operation for hours and he pays the freight. Straight business do you pick up good will worth the amount lost in sales. If not then its no go.

I understand he told him to pound rocks. Look the guy at the fair agreed for the beer fest was got screwed out of a whole bunch of sales and gained nothing. This man by his actions in that area may pick up additional business.

There's more than ONE WAY to get publicity. “Crumb and Get It” is all over the news!

I hope conservatives in the neighborhood swamp the place. It would also be great if R&R; could make a point of stopping there on the next bus tour.
