Quote of the Day

ProudProgressive 2012/08/06 14:15:05

You know, Republicans have created this completely fictional president. His name is Barack X and he’s an Islamo-socialist revolutionary who’s coming for your guns, raising your taxes, slashing the military, apologizing to other countries, and taking his cues from Europe or worse yet, Saul Alinsky. And this is how politics has changed; you used to have to run against an actual candidate, but now you just recreate him inside the bubble and run against your new fictional candidate.

That’s how Bush won in 2004, by running against John Kerry, a French war criminal. And speaking of Bush, I know conservatives are saying oh Bill, come on Democrats did the same thing to him. No. Say what you will about the left’s hatred of Bush, at least we were hating on the real guy. We didn’t invent a boogeyman who tanked the economy, took us to war on false pretenses, and tortured prisoners. That was the actual guy.

But run down the list of complaints about fantasy Obama. He wants to raise your taxes, even though he’s lowered them. Confiscate your guns, even though he’s never mentioned it, and read terrorists their rights, yeah, like he did Tuesday in Somalia. And look what Gingrich said about him this month. (Video of Gingrich claiming Obama is against work). Yes, Obama is anti-work. You remember the bill he championed, The Grab A Corona And Call In Sick Act.

You see, the difference is the Republicans hatred of Obama is based on a paranoid feeling about what he might do. What’s he’s thinking. What he secretly wants to change. Anger with Bush was based on what he actually did. What Bush was thinking didn’t matter, because he wasn’t.

-- Bill Maher

Supreme Court Judge Scalia said the exact same thing on guns rights just recently:

Scalia opens door for gun-control legislation

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said Sunday the Second Amendment leaves open the possibility of gun-control legislation.

Scalia, one of the high court’s most conservative justices, said on “Fox News Sunday” that the majority opinion in the landmark 2008 case of District of Columbia v. Heller stated the extent of gun ownership “will have to be decided in future cases.”

Scalia said exceptions to gun rights were recognized when the Second Amendment was written, including a tort that prohibited people from carrying a “really horrible weapon just to scare people like a head ax or something.”

In that same interview, Scalia said the mandate was not a tax, in his opinion:

Scalia, in his wide-ranging interview with Fox News also repeated his criticism of Chief Justice John Roberts and the majority opinion this summer that largely upheld President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, particularly the part that called the consequence for non-compliance a tax, not a penalty.

"You don't interpret a penalty to be a pig,” he said. “It can't be a pig. … There is no way to regard this penalty as a tax."

Maher's a jackass, but part of maturity is realizing that even an ugly and mean son-of-a-bitch can be right on some things. Maher is correct about the paranoid delusions of the Right, though I'd argue Maher has some pretty weird paranoid delusions on some other topics.

I used to be a big fan of Bill Maher before you guys broke him. Maher supports drug legalization -- Obama cracked down on medical marijuana, which was a kick in the face for people with cancer, MS and glaucoma. Maher called for an end of America's various wars around the globe -- Obama started several new wars. Maher wanted to see justice -- Obama bailed out the worst white collar criminals in history and watched as they paid themselves record bonuses from taxpayer money while their victims were being foreclosed on and lost their jobs.

The list goes on. Maher stood behind the Occupy movement -- Obama mostly ignored the uprising of the socioeconomically disadvantaged masses, just as he ignored, or probably even approved of, the rampant police brutality against peaceful protesters (it's only a sign of an oppressive police state if it happens in Egypt, right?) Maher strongly supports gay marriage -- Obama was opposed to it and only changed his mind when it became politically convenient. But most importantly, Maher is a huge supporter of free speech. But you guys publicly flogged him for his funny quips about Obama (THAT'S RACISM!) and his well-deserved criticism of Sarah Palin (THAT'S SEXISM!)

Feminists and their male pets hate Maher for being an unapologetic male and for calling ...

But you guys publicly flogged him for his funny quips about Obama (THAT'S RACISM!) and his well-deserved criticism of Sarah Palin (THAT'S SEXISM!)

Feminists and their male pets hate Maher for being an unapologetic male and for calling Palin a bimbo. Nobody complained about misandry when he called Bush an idiot, but as soon as he criticizes an equally incompetent woman, he's an evil misogynist. And liberals in general seem to hate Maher ever since he compared Obama to Wayne Brady. The same Wayne Brady who is now celebrated as a liberal American hero for threatening that he would "gladly slap the s**t out of Bill Maher in the middle of the street". The thought police has no problem with minority groups threatening violence against white heterosexual men, only with men who won't be guilt-tripped into submission and honestly speak their unedited male mind.

So much for the liberal / progressive opinion on Maher. You rejected the guy for having the guts to voice his politically incorrect opinion. An opinion that I greatly enjoyed until Maher pulled his tail between his legs in response to your public beating and decided to go with your thought control program. You broke Maher, one of the best comedians since George Carlin. You forced him to apologize for calling a spade a spade -- i.e., for calling Palin a stupid bimbo and a c***, for calling Pope Ratzinger a Nazi, and for generally speaking out what many libertarian freethinkers believe (as well as the few liberal freethinkers who haven't yet succumbed to the dictatorship of political correctness).

And now you pull him out again because he said something convenient, like a Christian who disavows the Mosaic law but will happily use it to make a point against gay marriage? Sorry, but this won't fly. If you want me to listen to Maher, allow the man to speak his libertarian mind and stop telling him what to say and think. And if you want me to believe that you're any better than authoritarian neocons, stop censoring free speech.

PS: Bill, I'm sorry they've castrated you. You used to be one of the greats. Please try and grow your balls back, ok? Don't let them beat you into another politically correct mouthpiece.

Hey, Mich, you gotta admit the upside to a Romney presidency will be watching all these idiots fund further tax breaks for Romney and his posse.

It would be fun listening to them bitch, moan and groan when the Ryan budget ends their Earned Income Tax Credit and Mortgage Interest Deduction, which will substantially raise taxes on the entire middle class. And all to fund more tax breaks for the Romney's of the world!

That alone would make a Romney presidency worth it!

The right does have to contend with a lot of misinformation.

My father in law was saying this weekend that obama never voted on anyting while in the illinois senate, that he just voted "present" 130 times.

he did vote present 130 times. out of 4,000 total votes (about 3%).

but they only focus on part of the story.

Maher used to be spot-on about *everything*. But now he no longer dares to be critical of people who are either female, black or liberal. And they're chipping away at his right to be critical of religion as well.

That last part might sound strange, but Liberals aren't opposed to religion. They, too, have recognized it as a great control instrument. Remember Obama's "what would Jesus do" speech? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Maher lost a single word about that. He has learned his lesson: Criticizing Obama = racism, and religion is only a problem when conservatives use it.

Oh Gee, another POS from Bill Maher who says: "the difference is the Republicans hatred of Obama is based on a paranoid feeling about what he might do. What’s he’s thinking. What he secretly wants to change."

I thought it was about his incompetent leadership and inability to improve the economy.
I thought it was about that $800billion he was going to use to rebuild the infrastructure
with shovel ready jobs and not to pay off his chronies who donated to his $750million
    campaing chest in 2008.
