PUBLIC OPINION > Vietnam's Smoking Ban Is a Good Idea

SodaHead News 2012/06/20 16:00:00
Vietnam passed a landmark bill recently banning public smoking completely. Some places in the States have banned smoking in certain public places, like schools and bars -- Vietnam did the same in 2010. But in Vietnam, those limited bans weren't working, and some organizations projected 70,000 deaths per year in the country by 2030. So the country upped the ante and extended the ban. We asked the public if it's a good idea.

There was plenty of opposition, but in the end, most people agreed the ban was acceptable. We wouldn't go so far as to call it a "great" idea, based on results, but it did win a majority vote. There was, of course, plenty of opposition from those suggesting smoking should be a choice, regardless of the consequences. Still, a complete ban would theoretically cut back on annual deaths. That's definitely a plus.

Smokers Say Heck Naw

Since smokers make up approximately 19% of the populations (17% in the context of this poll), we should probably point out the difference in opinion between smokers and nonsmokers. Nearly three-fourths of non-smokers think the ban sounds like a great idea; however, a mere eight percent of smokers agree. If nearly half of Vietnam's male population smokes (currently 47.4%), they'll have a hard time enforcing this law.

Liberals Lay Down the Law

Outside of the smoking demographic, there were a couple of very strong correlations. Politics, for example, brought out a 36% difference in opinion. Only 36% of conservatives felt a complete public smoking ban would be a good idea, while exactly twice the percentage of liberals felt the same. Usually, progressives and libertarians prove to be extremes, but in this case liberals took the strongest approach on the issue.

Older Voters Oppose

There was one demographic that was even more telling than politics: age. The age gap here fell at about 25 years old, where support for the ban more than doubled. Most likely, these are young people who have lost loved ones to cigarettes, or at least people who have heard horror stories. Older voters have no doubt lost loved ones as well, but they've seen the decisions made first-hand, and have perhaps come to believe that those deaths were preventable by the deceased.

Seriously? It's a TERRIBLE idea! And I'm not even a smoker. That is absolutely RIDICULOUS outright ban smoking publicly. Way too extreme.

Interesting [read: frighteningly totalitarian] to see what others are willing to kill people for (no smoking in public) and the justifications they give.

Well in the sense that they are trying to get rid of something that is a potential killer its not really that bad. But i dont know vietnams politics so I'm not sure what the real reason behind this is. Maybe they really care who knows?

It's all about common courtesy. Something in which our society is clearly deficient because everyone thinks freedom only applies to them and not all those around them.

I'm a non-smoker and I disagree with smoking bans as well. You wouldn't break into your neighbor's house, point a gun to his head, and make him put out his cigarette. At least I hope you wouldn't. It is immoral for you to do so. If it is immoral for one person to do to another person, then It is immoral for government to tell people what they can and cannot put into their body. Keep feeding the nanny state and it's going to eventually come after your favorite "vice" that you may or may not think is a vice and you'll cry foul.

I'm against smoking in public. I'm also a non-smoker, and I hate inhaling other people's secondary smoke. That's why I'm glad I live in Austin where they also have the public smoking ban and what I loved about living in San Francisco. That's one thing I dearly loathed about Virginia as well. I'd much rather have the government running our country than large corporations, lobbyists, and tobacco industries. Can you say, "corruption?"

It's about everyone, and about solidarity kind of like the same way the Old Testament in the Bible which the conservatives toot their trumpets about goes. I do believe the Golden Rule states, "Do unto others as you want done to you." You see, I wouldn't know too much about the Bible because I'm a Pagan.

No it's not a good idea... it's a GREAT idea... but you can't ban stupidity. Some people just like acting stupid. They will smoke, eat fast food and drink pop. Then they will complain when their health goes belly up. If you try to help them they will complain and tell you that they should have the right to do whatever they want, even if YOU have to end up paying for it...

The biggest myth is that cigarette filters are biodegradable. In fact, cigarette butts are not biodegradable in the sense that most people think of the word. The acetate (plastic) filters can take many years to decompose. Smokers may not realize that their actions have such a lasting, negative impact on the environment.
This myth has been perpetuated not just by the wishful thinking of many smokers, but also by the cigarette companies, who have taken great pains to keep their customers in the dark on this issue.

I said 'somewhat' biodegradable, they decompose over time even the plastic filters.
    Thats what biodegradable means!
Biodegradable: adjective (of a substance or object) capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms.

and all the gunk that the filters catch before you inhale the smoke washes out easily when wet and goes into our water systems.
