PUBLIC OPINION > The Zimmerman Controversy Is Going Too Far

SodaHead News 2012/04/02 21:00:00
George Zimmerman fatally shot Trayvon Martin on February 26, and it took about one month for the case to reach the national spotlight. Now it's easily the most controversial item in the daily news, dividing the public at every turn. In addition to the ambiguous details surrounding the shooting, a big part of the controversy concerns its racial implications. Some suspect Zimmerman attacked Martin because of his race, and as a result the case has taken on elements reminiscent of the Rodney King case in 1991. There's even a Twitter movement called #KillZimmerman demanding street justice. We asked the public if this is getting out of hand.

martin zimmerman sodahead

No one is short on an opinion when it comes to this case, but most people can agree that the whole thing is getting just a little out of hand. One thing we noticed from both sides of the argument was a finger pointed at the media. The Top Opinion read, "Newspapers and television news don't care whether or not [Zimmerman] might be innocent or guilty so long as it drives ratings up, they'd dance for joy while America burned if they got ratings." Sadly, it's probably true. Very little has been confirmed about the case, but the media has done an excellent job at recklessly speculating.

The Dividing Line

Obviously, there was a fine political line between the left and the right; liberals tend to give Martin the benefit of the doubt, and conservatives tend to give Zimmerman the benefit of the doubt. However, a third of liberals agreed the opposition against Zimmerman is going too far. It's one thing to take Martin's side, but resorting to further violence will only aggravate tensions further.

College Controversy

One of the only non-political demographics that came close to justifying the level of controversy was college students. It could be that the issue is being tossed around at greater velocity in university classrooms, where debate is generally encouraged. High school students did not feel the same.

More Women Want Resolution

Beyond politics and the classroom, there was very little difference of opinion. We suspected men would be more willing to continue the controversy, and that was true, but only by a small margin. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what side of the fence you're on. Most people just want to take it down a notch.

I don't think the dead pain in the ass is as innocent as the media says it is. You never know what people can do.

Most people believe Z murdered Martin. We saw his photos just after the police took him down to the police station. The photo appeared a few days later trying to show that he was beaten up, even a broken nose. His story was changed after his father entered the scene. So what are we the people to believe? exactly what we believe.it was all there. A father trying to save his son ( pulling all the strings that he could). What a mess he made of the situation..Z is lying and his father is trying to fix it. So this is why his son lies so easily. Yes his unstable reputation is not something to be proud.of..not a model citizen. God know and He will look after it.

Zimmerman who had a history of violence and rap sheet,

New court documents revealed that Zimmerman went to court in 2005 and 2006 for accusations of domestic violence, tussling with a police officer and speeding

In 2005, Zimmerman, then 20, was arrested and charged with “resisting officer with violence” and “battery of law enforcement officer,” both which are third-degree felonies.

I doubt that his attorneys would ever let him say a word in court. Any confession would have had to take place before he lawyered up.

I have a number of opinions arising from this tragic event. Don’t mean to be long winded but would like to share my perspective with others for thought.
The news media as it exists today, is doing what it does, unfortunately many of the sources are now agenda driven and not fact driven. They were able to hijack the word “NEWS” and what it once meant.
As far as creating or causing unrest is not true, the tension was already in place. This was only communicated which I believe is news worthy. The reporters fall short asking questions or investigating all the parties involved to draw more attention to a bigger injustice. For example, Was Zimmerman wearing what looked like a “flack vest” under his shirt (that I noticed in the station video), to go to the store?, Why wasn’t the gun collected, or a un-natural death, accidental or not investigated in any event or is it common-place in Sanford? (reminds me of “first blood” jerk-town USA). Who was responsible for that? Why weren’t all parties involved subjected to a collection of all their phone records including the da, Zimmerman’s father… etc?, might a cover-up been in play? Might certain media sources be moving toward defending this why? Is this damage control for a potential candidate? Given the implication of Zimmerman’s father’s profession I wonder if justice will ever be achieved. Complete intervention is the protocol here which I haven’t seen. I could go on but will spare you!

It's gotten out of hand only because the police have not yet arrested this Zimmerman dude! He deserves exactly what he's getting. He should suffer the same consequences Trayvon did, then he and his family would know how it feels to be gunned down for no other reason than your race "Walking While Black".

Zimmerman had the authority to shoot this dude, when the dude attacked him from behind and began pounding his head into the ground. My motto - No warning shot will be fired. Got it? This was no peace loving kid - check out his record,

I enjoy to kill what I eat...with respect and love for Mother Earth and the animals she offers. It's not a daily activity. Do you know the origin of your dinner? I'm greatful for my right to bear arms. I feel safe having in my home. Little Cali kids like you need a good slapping. I wish death on no one. I wish for people that own weapons to be educated and respect the firearms they own. Responsibility. People of all shapes, sizes and state of mind have weapons. Do I agree with this being allowed? No. But that's the way it is. When a nut climbs into your window looking for a few things...have fun with your broom.

You are really a dumb ass! How the hell do you compare this to a mere unnatural cause. That really pisses me off! It's someone like you who would stalk someone just as that idiot Zimmerman did. How would you like it if someone followed your ass and confronted you and you could not defend yourself or if it were one of your family members? I wish Trayvon had been able to take the gun from the creep and used it on him instead to take his life. What would you have thought then since Zimmerman is mostly white? I bet you'd have a different tone then. I bet you wouldn't be so sick of hearing it then. Get Real!

Your "reasoning" skills on a par with your average cucumber. So what you're saying if somebody blows your brains out, "it was your time". Like over the weekend in OK, 4 ramdomly selected blacks were targeted in what looks like revenge shooting because one of the shooter's father died at the hands of a black two years before.

The reason Zimmerman right now is one of if not the most hated men in the country is he couldn't have done more things wrong in this situation if he tried.

    1. Takes a gun with him to go shopping, then makes a detour. Highly suspect story.
    2. First follows in car, then on foot. Two major no-no's in any Watch program.
    3. Gets in a fight, probably the result of him trying to detain/question Trayvon.
    4. Uses grossly excessive and lethal force in a fist fight or wrestling
    5. Does not phone 911 AFTER he shot Martin.
    6. Several witnesses seen him, getting up, starting to walk away.
    7. Neither "stand your ground" or some phony "self-defense" claim applies.

This idiot is as guity as sin and MUST stand trial!
