PUBLIC OPINION > The Teacher Who Left His Wife for a Student Made a Big Mistake

SodaHead News 2012/03/06 23:09:23
Every once in a while, "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by The Police hits a little close to home. In the case of James Hooker (41) and Jordan Powers (18), it's just like the song. The girl is less than half his age, and they both seem to be into it. A therapist has gone on record to compare Hooker to a sex offender, calling him "pathologically immature," but similar accusations were made about Doug Hutchison (51) and Courtney Stodden (16) and many observers defended him. Good Morning America took a public poll on this new story. Let's see how people voted.

This one was a little obvious, but the main reason we decided to recap it was to take a look at the demographic breakdowns. But before we get to that, we thought it'd be interesting to dig into the comments attached to "Okay" votes. Most people who let the affair slide were simply unwilling to get involved in the couple's business. Regardless of what may have happened before, she's 18 now and capable of making her own decisions. For his part, quite a few wrote it off as a "mid-life crisis" and predicted a swift end to the relationship, once the reality of the situation sets in. Yes, there were a handful of what you might call "supporters," but they were few and far between. Now, on to the demos...

Men Are More Willing to Consent

As you may have suspected, the male voters were less disturbed by the story. They were more than twice as likely to vote "Okay," with exactly a third of them throwing in for Mr. Hooker. Judging by the comments, female voters were not only more likely to say it's a mistake, but more adamant about it, as well.

More Support From His Age Group

We singled out Powers' and Hooker's age groups specifically to find out what their peers might think, and believe it or not, teens and young adults are more likely to criticize the relationship than people closer to the man's age. Strong words in the staff room, perhaps, but not as strong as the words in the classroom.

Complication Like Company

There wasn't much sympathy in any of the relationship demographics -- certainly not from married voters -- but respondents who listed their relationship as "complicated" did show some. Presumably, it's easier to relate to a complicated emotional attachment when you're involved in one yourself.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit Good Morning America's poll about James Hooker and Jordin Powers. We'd love to hear from you!

Let's see..Neither have a job. She's gonna get bored with him sooner or later...I vote for sooner. All his friends are his age and she still has friends her age...Heck he may even fool around with her friends since he likes them younger..Not in my top trust catagory.

There are hundreds of cases where female teachers do this with male students and it is a minor blip on the radar... so lets not take the one time it's a male teacher and turn it into a media circus!

Be careful! if she is of legal age to consent, this guy could sue you for defamation of character or slander

I understand why you feel the way that you do, but legally he has done nothing wrong. Most people just have a problem with him not living his life according to their moral values. These are two grown people who have the right to make their own decisions about how they choose to live their lives. What you or I think about it really does not matter it's how they feel about it that matters. Believe me, you don't want him to try, because he would win.

He would win? All one needs to do is bring constitutional rights into a courtroom, just because the dumbed down idiots in america have no idea what we actually have the power to do, noone has the education it takes anymore, to beat the "status quo" when it comes to what we have the "right" to and not to do. Just because noone uses our constitutional rights for a base, is exactly why corruption, demoralization, and the judicial system have immoral and unjust Norms (in other words what the masses believe to be the norm, doesnt have to be)
If he wants to waste his money, thats his call but he would not win especially if he tried to sue me based on that comment Alone.

I don't really know but what kind of punishment would be given to a guilty teenager? If a child accuses a grown up of doing something that he/she did not do there should be a severe penalty though.

None of us know enough of the situation to decide whether or not it was big mistake. For all we know his wife could be a bitch and he could honestly love the other girl.
The only reason people are freaking out about this is because the girl is 18, if he had left his wife for a woman his age nobody would care. Don't judge their relationship just because of the age gap, because you've never met these people.

I couldn't imagine going for a guy twice my age!!! That is just plain gross. Sick! And not only does she get an old guy but now he doesn't even have a job? Where are the benefits. At least she could have gone and found some old rich dude, maybe she thinks she's in love?

They are both over 18 and the law say's they can do it. Is it right, I don't know?
  • sensibl... frank 2012/05/28 16:57:03

That's what the law says, Frank. It does not matter what people think about it. What better start mattering to people is their name calling and disparaging character remarks, this guy could become a millionaire by simply sueing people for defamation of character. They don't realize the type of real damage they can do to him when legally he has done nothing wrong.

Good grief! Deja vu happening here! And it really happened. I ran into an old friend (not old old, but old enough to know better) who confessed his dilemma. He had married a young woman of 19 and was having a hard time keeping her after one year. Oh well. He should've thought of that before marrying her. She was getting bored with him after she totaled the sports car he bought her and showered her with money, things, etc. Next time he'll think using his brain. Same with this guy. I might have a slightly different take if he was single. But, he wasn't. He was married and actually left his wife for a girl young enough to be his daughter. Not cool at all.

    Really?

Does it seem gross? Yes. Of course. Why would you want to be in love with someone who could be your father?

Is it a mistake? Maybe. We can't be sure until (if) they break up.

But honestly, age is just a number. Who you love shouldn't be contingent on how old they are.

It is only a little less bad than same gender couples. At least they are the same race. It's all abnormal and not to be accepted.

I think you read it correctly. Proper living is a narrow path. I can't control it but don't have to accept it or evade how I really feel about it.

Political correctness will rot your brain..
  • smb Waldorf 2012/03/09 16:26:00
    smb
so will narrow mindedness, which it already seems to have done to yours. As repugnant as I find this story about the old guy leaving his wife for the young girl, I find your holier than thou attitude even more repugnant. Accepting other lifestyle choices is not about political correctness, it's about choosing to live together in peace rather than constant friction. Everyone is free to walk their own path, there is no narrow path of "proper living" except in your own mind.
  • Waldorf smb 2012/03/10 14:32:04

It's that anything-goes hedonistic, whatever-feels-good lifestyle that has totally undermined society. Your belief that anything should be tolerated quietly is part of it.
  • smb Waldorf 2012/04/04 07:42:32
    smb
so it's better for society to be unwilling to bend and allow others to live the way they believe is right for them? If what they are doing hurts no other person, I see no reason why their lifestyle should not be tolerated at least, and even accepted. If it's someone's religious beliefs that cause them not to accept a certain lifestyle, then they should not participate in the objectionable lifestyle. But they do not have the right to force everyone to live by their personal moral convictions. Jesus said don't try to get the splinter out of someone else's eye while there's a plank in yours. To me that means just worry about your own actions and not those of everyone else.

The problem is multiculturalism. Instead of trying to force that to work, we should be allowing that it is natural for people to want to live among people like themselves, including race, general culture, and religion. They will fight for their own place in this world. It's not a new idea, and there is nothing wrong with it as a natural tendency. Those who want to paint it as wrong are just brainwashed into advocating the New World Order, wherein everyone is a multicultural mutt except the Zionist Jews.

Well, that's fair enough. I would apologize, but I can't. My little sister was on my account while I was away. I apologize for her, anyhow. That wasn't one of her better arguements. Sometimes she's too opinionated. We all have the right to our own opinion, and we all have the right to disagree with someone elses. Spending time arguing with someone over the internet will get you nowhere.
