Public Opinion Supports Anti-Gay Florida Teacher: Surprised? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Last week, we asked SodaHeads if they thought Jerry Buell, a well-liked Florida teacher, should have been suspended for posting anti-gay remarks on his Facebook.

For those of you who missed out on the original story, here's an excerpt:

Buell was Teacher of the Year at Mount Dora High School in Lake County, Florida. But now he's been reassigned pending an investigation into whether saying he "almost threw up" at the thought of same-sex marriage -- which he calls a sin -- on Facebook violates the district's code of conduct.

Buell argues that the posts were made on his own computer on his personal time, and that it "wasn't out of hatred. It was about the way I interpret things," according to The Orlando Sentinel.

Florida school districts have adopted social media policies designed to address these thorny issues, stressing that "employees should remain professional in using the communication at all times."

SodaHeads responded en masse and decided Buell's Facebook page is his own business -- he should not be suspended for his statements.

But wouldn't it be great to see just who's voting for what? Were homosexuals more likely to oppose Buell? What are they saying in merry old England? How does religion correlate with the issue?

Luckily, SodaHead is equipped to find out. So let's dive deeper and see what we find.

The British don't seem to understand what individual liberty is all about. We fought a war with them over this issue, if memory serves.

Atheists, Democrats, and gays are voting their judgment of the content of Buell's speech, with no regard for his rights as an individual. This "results-oriented politics" brought us Obama, and threatens to bring us to a blood-and-flames civil war.

I don't agree with his stance, being gay myself, but Buell didn't write the comments in question from a computer put in his hands by the district. The computer he used was one HE bought with HIS hard-earned money, not one THEY bought with THEIRS. Why is the district trying to extend its authority over him?

I agree with Buell. What he does with his home computer time is his business. He's allowed to think and feel any way he likes, and it should be perfectly okay for him to voice his opinion on Facebook or any other social media site. Alas, Buell is right, too. It is a sin.

I don't agree with the what the man said. However we live in a country where you have freedom of speech, and he is free to say whatever he wants.

It's more about freedom of speech, but the question lies, with his attitude, is he a fit teacher to take care of students, some of which are gay?

Sure it's his private facebook, but that attitude isn't really conducive to a safe environment.

But I'd honestly survey the students and ask how safe they feel around him, if they've seen him promoting gay bullying and the like. If he hasn't he's fine, and I'd do that to all the teachers.

Uhm - I don't think this is so much about supporting the anti-gay Florida teacher so much as trying to support freedom of speech.

I support the pro-WBC Supreme Court decision for them to speak as they will. That doesn't mean I support the WBC.

homophobia is a label thrown at everyone who expresses any sort of ant-gay sentiment...a phobia is a fear so the word insinuates a fear of homosexuals...i do not fear homosexuality, i simply disagree with it

Infertile people and elderly people can't produce children either, yet we still allow them to marry. Even people with no desire to produce children can get married. Nothing in the laws of the United States says that you must produce a child in order to remain married.

If you're against gay marriage, don't get one, but you cannot cite your religion as a reason to deny it for everyone.

Homophobia is hatred towards a Homosexual or a Bisexual.
Telling me that you donot favor Sa,e-Sex Marriage is not Homophobia. Expressing hatred and despise for them and messing with their lifes is.

No one said he hated or feared gays. He just thinks homosexuality is a sin. I think lying is a sin, does that mean I'm scared and despise all people who lie? No way.

Teachers, as far as I know, have always been subject to certain morals clauses. I have no solid opinion on it. I want teachers to be as free as anyone, but I would not want to be a gay student of his. If he said he was gay and he didn't like or approve of straight people, I would find being in his class very distracting, knowing he harbors ill feelings toward me. I certainly would jump at the chance to get in his face.

ok, last I checked I lived in America "land of the free" and he does have the right to his opinion on Facebook. he really shouldn't have been suspended regardless of the notes content. I don't care if it was praising Hitler (which I hope I don't ever come across) he has the right of free expression, if people can have their whole families run around naked for free expression why can't a simple teacher say something to his friends?

Firstly, what a person says in his private life and private opinions has nothing to do with school time.
Secondly, any person, on any issue, should be free to speak - unless it is Dangerous or Classified information.

The U.S. Constitution and Common Sense Prevail in Lake County, Florida: School Board Exonerates and Reinstates Teacher Suspended for Comments on Homosexual Marriage

Jerry Buell has been reinstated as a teacher, allowing him to return back to the classroom tomorrow. The Lake County School Board made its decision today after a week-long “investigation” into a comment Buell made on his personal Facebook page expressing his disapproval of legalized homosexual marriage in New York. The Superintendent met with Buell and Liberty Counsel Attorney Harry Mihet this afternoon to announce the Board’s decision. Buell has encountered nationwide scrutiny and has missed the first three vital days of getting to know his students and preparing them for the year. The amount of damage that has already been done and the effect this will have on his students is irreversible and should not go unnoticed.

It is a shame that Mr. Buell had to miss three days of teaching for his employer to learn this lesson.”

He has freedom of speech just like everyone else, but I do wonder what the RWNJs would say if he posted a pro gay message.

I suppose you would view me as a RWNJ as I'm not a fan of gay marriage. I am a however a conservative TEA party supporter and as such don't believe in punishing anyone for their opinion. Just as long the teacher in question didn't let his personal opinions affect his teaching.
  • JohnG MichaelJ 2011/09/03 20:20:36
    JohnG
No I would consider you RWNJ for supporting the TP. What if it was an anti-Christian message?
  • MichaelJ JohnG 2011/09/03 22:54:46

John, it would be the same principle, free speech away form the job. Just as long as the teacher didn't let his personal belief interfere with his teaching work.

As far as your habit of casually calling people names, again that is free speech. Enjoy!
