PUBLIC OPINION > 'Slutty Wednesday' Was Inappropriate

SodaHead News 2012/06/14 13:00:00
Students at New York City's Stuyvesant High School have been protesting the school's dress code in an interesting way lately, by setting aside a single day and refusing to follow the code. They called the revolt "Slutty Wednesday." It doesn't necessarily mean the students tried to dress like "sluts" -- in fact, photos suggest it was pretty tame -- but the message was clear. We asked the public if it was appropriate.

slutty wednesday sodahead

Though the majority decided Slutty Wednesday was inappropriate, a good deal of respondents stood up for the students. Many of them argued that the outfits pictured in the photographs were not "slutty," and the name was clearly just a device used to make a point. However, more had a problem with kids trying to push in that direction when they could be fighting, say, that soft drink ban.

Teens Toy With the Idea

As you might expect, teens were much more likely to go for the idea. Teens came up with it, after all. But it was still split, which means there are probably a lot of students at Stuyvesant who aren't onboard with Slutty Wednesday. As respondents got older, their support steadily dropped. Likewise, parents were one of the least supportive demographics.

Females Fight It

The pictures mostly show girls walking the Stuyvesant halls, but results suggest girls are quite a bit more resistent. This is almost certainly due to the word "slutty," which can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some girls will obviously be offended by the word, while others might use it more as a metaphor or symbol. More often than not, it's taken as offensive.

Looks Good to Liberals

The political correlation was expected, but we didn't think it would be the most divisive demographic. There are definitely parallels here to feminist and liberal movements, such as Rock The Slut Vote. So, even though it's a dress code issue, Slutty Wednesday is more likely to appeal to those who sympathize with reactionary women's rights movements.

Lefan is just saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover.' A man or woman can be sensual and smart or dumb, demure and dumb or smart. He's just saying there is no formula. I don't think you're a traitor to your gender; I just think you're trying to foist your sensibilities onto others. As long as one's freedom of expression is not infringing upon the right of another to exercise their freedom, I agree with Lefan and say go for it.

Women, these are kids, also they are in school, the clothes they wear aren't glued to them, they can dress however they want after school, in a school they have rules that need to be followed, hell I'm surprised this school didn't get fed up and promise them uniforms to come next year.

Here goes another over sensitive idiot preaching freedom of choice.
I'd rather have rules and regulations than let these young and impressionable kids run wild.
Parents, especially Cau parents have no control over their child anymore and they stray off the right path.

Speak for yourself, I raised four girls, none went to school inappropriately dressed as far as modesty was concerned. I did not like some of their choices but they soon came around. Not all parents have lost control. Show me one girl that would show up naked or with her hoha showing and I'll show you a very rare and possibly a girl who needs a doctor. have some faith in the youth, you might find they are far more sensible than you believe. They were protresting an idea not the right to go bare assed.

Their protests were not founded on stable ground...they were not protesting for women's workplace discrimination or anything prominent like that but an idiotic issue like this, when they should be focused on studying b/c they are in SCHOOL. But obviously there is always this Western over-hyped black sheep bringing up insignificant issues to cause unnecessary ruckus...look around the world...gay marriage? We should be focused on poverty and hunger etc.
    Lord -.-

I can't disagree with your call for protesting and acting on the more serious issues. However, there are always many minor issues that need attention too. Granted, these girls were protesting a minor problem but the fact that they had the courage and interest to protest it is a sign that they might also become involved in some major issues later.

i think that at highschool, all the teachers tell us is how "grown up", and "adult" we are. which is why we get punished for our actions and what not. they also say school is our "job" but every adult i know gets to choose what clothes they get to wear to work... within reason, of course. so if we really are "adults, going to our jobs" then why cant we make our own decisions about simple stuff like what to wear, or what not to wear? but i also feel if some girls ass is hanging out, then yea, she should be punished.

See at my school, we kind of try and say to the school, "these clothes aren't slutty, there's nothing with shoulders or yoga pants!"

I guess some schools try the whole "what's wrong with being a slut?" approach.

Inappropriate, completely inappropriate. Dress codes are for a reason, and are the rule of the school, or institution. Students should know that they must obey rules and laws, and protesting them is inappropritate, and won't get them anything but trouble. Are they going to protest any rule or law that they disagree with? They must respect authority, and follow the rules, otherwise they will continue to be in trouble. Parents have to have rules with their children, else their household would be intolerable, and the children would rule the house, and parents would lose control. So the same goes for schools. They expect their rules to be followed, and their authority respected and obeyed. Students are out of line in their protesting.

Well I am against all forms of dress codes and school uniform policy because it is counter productive to education in that it doesn't allow the students to have their own culture and also pushes outdated taboos on young people. There is absolutely nothing wrong with nudity or sexuality, absolutely nothing. If you think there is something wrong with it go back to the 1200's because you are living in the past where stoicism is the norm and all forms of pleasure are considered "sins". I really do hate puritanical christian culture, especially when it comes to this issue.

Gregory, your argument does not apply to this situation. This is a school dress code, and nudity has no place in institutions of education, and neither does sexy clothes, that are a distraction from the what the students are in school for. This dress code has nothing to do with going back to the 1200's. Our society has many codes of behavior, and what is decent and appropriate to do, and or say. They call it manners, and decency. Your beliefs may be straying too far from those codes of manners and decency. Think this over again.
  • Razorey... Bill 2012/06/14 22:46:59
    Razoreye001
Well those codes of manners and decency come from the Victorians and need to change. What I want to see is a cultural change from those norms to new ones with roots in pre-judeochristian cultures such as the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Babylonians, or even some cultures with no taboo about the subject like those of India. I acknowledge those codes but I question the purpose and the origins of those codes. It is only a distraction because it is not the norm if it became the norm people would be too jaded to care about it. So here's a question for you why are these norms superior to the ones I would prefer?
