Public Opinion Says Punishing Kids With Hot Sauce Is Child Abuse [INFOGRAPHIC]

SodaHead Infographics 2011/08/25 22:00:00
Earlier this week we showed SodaHeads a video clip of Jessica Beagley, a 36-year-old Anchorage woman, forcing her 8-year-old child to keep hot sauce in his mouth and take cold showers as punishment for behavioral problems at school.

The video is from a November episode of "Dr. Phil," so you may have seen it before, but Beagley was just recently charged with misdemeanor child abuse because of her actions.

Here's an except from the original "Hot Sauce Mom" story:

She could get up to a year in prison along with her $10,000 fine, and The Anchorage Daily News reports it only took the jury one day to decide she was guilty.

Henry Paul, a Mount Sinai psychiatrist, told ABC News, "The stun -- the shock -- the acute anxiety can also lead to [a] long-term type of post-traumatic stress disorder that we often see in criminals who are incarcerated.

Most SodaHeads thought the hot sauce treatment was way out of line, but there are always dissenters. So it's time to take a deeper look into the demographics behind our results and see who they were.

Let's dive.

Here's a soap joke for you:
PARENT-I'll wash your mouth out with soap.
CHILD-I'll blow bubbles out my ass.

Here's something else to think about, parents decide to have children, children don't decide to be born.
  • Thank y... Ide Clair 2011/08/26 13:29:55
    Thank you but no...
Would you be happy to be punished with the soap for being late for work? Why would it be ok for kids but not for adults?

    You can't fire your kids.

I'm not saying soap's OK. The hot sauce is at least edible. I've seen one post from a guy who claimed his doctor advised using vinegar.

But, when you really get down to it, the entire point is to groom them to be productive citizens who stay out of jail--unless it's for a good cause.

When my son was younger he got soap for cussing. As he got older, the punishments became more sever. Now if my employees cuss at work, they lose their jobs.

    Not in my house.
My two and a half year old grandson eats jalapeno's peppercinis and hot cherry peppers [the red ones] just like his grandpa.
It might be child abuse if I deprived him of them when Im munching on them in front of him though.

Every child is different. This kid is absurd to say the least. What he needed was an old school ass whipping. As a child I would have been lucky to have hot sauce and cold showers. I got spanked with a leather belt and sometimes a switch from a tree. And I deserved it. My mother was determined to get me to act right or else. She whooped my butt. And today I thank her for it. She taught me respect for authority. Most who are against such practices have sassy, disrespectful, vulgar, arrogant, selfish, irritating brats for kids. Your kids will have a difficult time in this world.

It's not really traumatic abuse, if it's not made with habanero, since jalapenos aren't really that hot, unless you're hypersensitive to pepper.

My now long departed mother's bland cooking was abuse enough for me growing up.

The only lessons a child learns from that sort of angry parenting is to distrust adults and to find better ways to lie and to avoid them. Sort of like the way our government is treating small businesses.
