PUBLIC OPINION > People Are Split Over Obama's Same-Sex Support

SodaHead News 2012/05/10 16:00:00
President Obama made history on Wednesday when he became the first U.S. president to openly support gay marriage. Before now, he had been skirting around the issue -- supporting civil unions, but stopping short of full support. In an interview with ABC News, he said, "At a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married." It's a bold move, but will it help his campaign? We asked the public.

obama gay sodahead

As of writing this, less than 24 hours after Obama made the announcement, there were exactly 644 votes for this poll: 322 think it will hurt his campaign, and 322 think it will help. With a margin of zero votes, it's impossible to predict how Obama's new stance will affect his campaign. But it's clearly a divisive issue. Opinions ranged from "a stand for equality" to "cheap pandering" -- needless to say, tensions were high. But where were those tensions rooted?

Resistance From the Right

It might seem obvious at first, but it's interesting to note that both liberals and conservatives seem to have voted as if it were a question of preference. Liberals were strongly convinced it would help (81%) and conservatives were strongly convinced it wouldn't (15%). That doesn't say much in terms of prediction, but it explains the dead heat. Moderates fell at exactly 50%. Typical.

Homosexuals Have Faith

On the same note, homosexual voters were strongly convinced Obama's announcement would help his campaign -- again, probably because it's a big push in their favor. Straight voters, on the other hand, made up the majority of the vote, so they came out even. However, we did notice a few comments from gay respondents who expressed concern that it might hurt the campaign after all.

Women Have High Expectations

Now here's a demographic that might actually give us some information -- one that's not directly related to the issue at hand. Nearly two out of three female respondents felt the decision would help Obama's campaign. And, judging by the correlation of the above demographics, that could mean women are more likely to support gay marriage, or even Obama. Men voted in the other direction, but not as strongly. (There were more male votes, hence the balance.)

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about Obama's support of gay marriage. We'd love to hear from you!

The man has a right to his opinion as long as he doesn't have the power to shove it down our throats. What has me outraged is this statement--Obama's words--"When I think about all those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf---" Some of you (including me) are old enough to remember June 6, 1944. Can you for even a second imagine General Eisenhower stating "over there fighting on my behalf" when discussing D-Day. In my opinion, our president is an insufferable, narcissistic, imperialist.

He made that clear when he was running, but throughout his term he's stated that his views were evolving. Now they have evolved. I am proud that our country has come to a point where equality is soon to be extended to every single citizen, no matter their race, gender, or sexuality. We are a nation for the people, and by the people,so why not hold true to that and allow everyone to spend the rest of their life with who they wish?

Marriage has been something defined as being between a man and a woman for over 5,000 years...I don't think the gay community with their radical desire to take over this instatution has the right to change this for all the rest of us....they can seek their rights in another form.

I am from this same era and John speaks the truth and the one that hates it, hate God and anything that is Godly! Someone said well, "that might be your opinion" and I said and say, "yes" and walk away... "Hey there, wait a minute, I would like to give you my opinion" they say... Oh, please write it out and mail it to me and I give them my mailing address. My name, street address and zone...That end the conversation, they did not have an opinion, they just want to knock your comment and force your hand and play mind games! I love boxing, and other liked contact sports; where you face-off and have rules and work within those rules and you have an impartial referee and three judges or maybe four and then the ref would be the breaking vote for a no tie-vote! Old school! Got an opinion, here, put on the gloves! I later when to open hand and using the feet in exercising verbal conversation when dealing with orientals! It works for all races and all opinions too! It can help your pray as well and ask, was all of that necessary; you did not allow 'um to speak? Enough, put on the gloves or get your "Ji"!!!

Your right doc moto, there has always been equality only certain groups are not satisfied with equality they want preferential treatment.
Nobody is stopping anyone from spending their life with who they wish, but as I said in a earlier sentence those advocating same sex marriage are looking for special treatment. Gays can get married in a civil ceremony, but they want the
monetary rights that married couples have, that's all that is driving this same sex
marriage baloney. They lead a abnormal lifestyle and that's fine with most people but they want more, this country and it's laws were not set up for two men or two women living as couples it's morally wrong, but they have to answer for it that is if they have any kind of faith. If they choose that way of life then so be it but don't expect to receive monetary gain for choosing that way of life. They want the constitution changed to suit their every whim, sorry but that's not what
this country was built on. Gays and lesbians can scream and holler till they are blue in the face but the constitution will not be changed.
All the polls you see where people are split 50-50 on this issue it's just the media playing their games, actually everytime this gay issue comes up on the ballot as a referendum it loses by a wide majority.

Before the Internet, before the TV and FM radio; the newspaper was the primary with many magazines and books...The primary tool for getting news out... The telegraph and posting at the sheriff's board, courtroom door, general store, the mill post or whatever public display of news was to hold before the printed news... If things slowed to that pace again, many so-called issues would be, did Henry's cow drop her calf? How was the church's bake sale, did they get enough for the 'bell'? etc... Hope you get my drift; we are plain moving too fast for that S and G reenactment! We have enough salt pillars and burnt places!

How interesting it is that our President has come out in favor of same sex marriages since most of the States have voted against it. Therefore, he is safe because he knows that really nothing will get changed in most States. What a clever strategy !

Sound like that scene in the wizard of oz where Dorthy and rest discover who the real Oz is and he says" Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain". That what he is doing here too. He is doing the same thing . I can hear him now (obama)" Pay no attention to the crappy economy, I support gay marriage even though I was against it a first and the Republicans hate women and they wanna kill granny too. Don't look at the economy."
It just political theater folks, he's lying to another voting block again!!!

Non-married people get discriminated against by governments by giving married people special privileges, like insurance benefits, tax deductions, end of life privileges in decision making; there is a very long list of special privileges people get for getting married that two heterosexual non-married people living together are not allowed to have.

What is appalling is that LGBT people, who have been discriminated against more than any group is fighting for legal marriage so they can be a part of discriminating against non-married people. What everyone should be fighting for is to end the discrimination against non-married people and give those benefits married people get to everyone. LGBT who want government benefits for being married are like slaves fighting to be free so they themselves can own slaves. ~ hypocrites!

I am so glad he had the balls to come out in support of gay marriage. At least he has the courage to have an opinion of his own, unlike his counterpart on the Republican side. Romney would never have the backbone to stand up for what he really believes. I am so proud of the President for taking a stand for civil rights.

LOL you are a HYPOCRITE. Obama said while running for the POTUS that he believes that Marriage is between a MAN & a WOMAN. Now he has changed his mind? LOL OH wait. That is called EVOLVING because he is a Liberal.

But Romney who was for gay marriage long ago and who has a since matured and changed his view on this subject he is referred to by you liberal BIGOTS as being spineless and prejudice.

You on the left just keep contradicting yourselves.

    LOL

Excuse me, but Romney has signed that crazy document that states that if he is president he will push for an amendment to the constitution that makes marriage only between a man and a woman. If that is maturing, he is going backwards.

The MAJORITY of AMERICANS do not want the definition of Marriage redefined. With that said your MESSIAH was against gay marriage before he was for it. OH OH.

Don't you find it rather of odd that Obie has decided to be for Gay Marriage when the VP made his usual gaffe? And its also odd that the timing is just right all for the sake of POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY.

SO if a LIBERAL is against GAY MARRIAGE and than is for GAY MARRIAGE it is referred to as EVOLVING but if a Conservative was for GAY MARRIAGE and then comes out AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE then its referred to as GOING BACKWARDS. LOL

You liberals just keep stepping into it over and over again. Everything you on the left have tried and are trying to discredit Romney with has BACKFIRED.

Obama against Gay Marriage before he was for it

I think whenever someone comes out for civil rights and then backs off that is definitely going backwards. If someone said they were for integration and then said they changed their bigoted mind about it then they would be taking a step back. Taking a step toward civil rights and fairness for all is always a step in the right direction and a step forward. No matter how they had to evolve to get there. And in my estimation it is no laughing matter to a lot of people in this country.

BS! He certainly didn't have to take that stance to get campaign funds. Are you nuts? This has the potential to turn a lot of independants off. Hopefully the tested the water a bit as any decent campaign would to see how this will effect the election. But an issue like this is not a slam dunk winner in a country as divided as this over same sex marriage. Look what they did in North Carolina.

I hope what he said hurts him. and if Mitt Romney says something that indicates he thinks the federal government has some major role in setting this policy, I regret only that there's not a way of punishing both of them. By and large it is for a State to determine how it is going to treat it's citizens. There is no State where homosexuals are prevented from going out into the political fray and attempting to extract from the body politic whatever it is they think they think need be accorded. The federal government has to make certain choices - who will serve in the military, who gets employment benefits, and other matters pertaining to operating itself as a governmental entity - but, beyond that, let the States operate as they see fit and the main thing the POTUS should be saying is "I'll let the States do as they see fit."
