PUBLIC OPINION > People Are Split Over Obama's Same-Sex Support

SodaHead News 2012/05/10 16:00:00
President Obama made history on Wednesday when he became the first U.S. president to openly support gay marriage. Before now, he had been skirting around the issue -- supporting civil unions, but stopping short of full support. In an interview with ABC News, he said, "At a certain point I've just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married." It's a bold move, but will it help his campaign? We asked the public.

obama gay sodahead

As of writing this, less than 24 hours after Obama made the announcement, there were exactly 644 votes for this poll: 322 think it will hurt his campaign, and 322 think it will help. With a margin of zero votes, it's impossible to predict how Obama's new stance will affect his campaign. But it's clearly a divisive issue. Opinions ranged from "a stand for equality" to "cheap pandering" -- needless to say, tensions were high. But where were those tensions rooted?

Resistance From the Right

It might seem obvious at first, but it's interesting to note that both liberals and conservatives seem to have voted as if it were a question of preference. Liberals were strongly convinced it would help (81%) and conservatives were strongly convinced it wouldn't (15%). That doesn't say much in terms of prediction, but it explains the dead heat. Moderates fell at exactly 50%. Typical.

Homosexuals Have Faith

On the same note, homosexual voters were strongly convinced Obama's announcement would help his campaign -- again, probably because it's a big push in their favor. Straight voters, on the other hand, made up the majority of the vote, so they came out even. However, we did notice a few comments from gay respondents who expressed concern that it might hurt the campaign after all.

Women Have High Expectations

Now here's a demographic that might actually give us some information -- one that's not directly related to the issue at hand. Nearly two out of three female respondents felt the decision would help Obama's campaign. And, judging by the correlation of the above demographics, that could mean women are more likely to support gay marriage, or even Obama. Men voted in the other direction, but not as strongly. (There were more male votes, hence the balance.)

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about Obama's support of gay marriage. We'd love to hear from you!

The man has a right to his opinion as long as he doesn't have the power to shove it down our throats. What has me outraged is this statement--Obama's words--"When I think about all those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf---" Some of you (including me) are old enough to remember June 6, 1944. Can you for even a second imagine General Eisenhower stating "over there fighting on my behalf" when discussing D-Day. In my opinion, our president is an insufferable, narcissistic, imperialist.

I don't think it will make much of a difference. There much, much bigger issues. The nation is heading dangerously close to default and hyperinflation is a real possibility. This seems to me like an intentional distraction.

Not surprising that women are more accepting of gay marriage than men. Men feel more threatened because, for some bizarre reason, they think gay marriage threatens their manliness. Got news guys. Your manliness comes from within, and has nothing to do with what other men (or women) might do.

One of the things that I have heard over and over again from women is that being gay for women is,, for the MOST part ,, a matter of CHOICE and that MOST women who MAKE that choice prefer to be called "Bi" rather then "gay"..

And you're wrong.. The "Gay" opposition is not any more based on a FEAR of a threat to one's Heterosexuality then being opposed to MURDER is based on a fear of becomming a murderer..

You're probably right that for many it is not a fear of a threat to their own heterosexuality, but there many for whom this is true as well.

Regarding what you have heard from other women about being gay...that may be true for them. It is not true for me. I believe that I first became aware of being gay in around grade five, and believe me I spent many years trying to deny the truth of it. I feel the only choice I had was to either pretend for the rest of my life to be somebody I was not, or to be myself and be true to myself. That was not for me, about choosing to be gay. It was about choosing whether to honor or dishonor my true self.

Well.. I can't speak for everybody so the degree to which that fear plays a part in this issue is not something that I feel is within the scope of my personal knowledge to render an informed opinion..

I WILL say this.. I don't care if someone is gay.. It doesn't bother me.. I don't stay awake at night wondering when that "Infection" is going to "Turn" me or anything like that..

I DO have an issue with the arguments being made in this debate.. I still maintain that marriage is not a right for anybody.. That we're talking about Legal Recognition here.. I believe that people are married when they make a commitment to each other.. That two people who share their lives together for any appreciable length of time are every bit as married to each other in the eyes of God whether they choose to go through the Legal requirements or not..

Saying that being married is a right is a lot like saying,, " I have a RIGHT to be Loved" and I'm NOT truely loved until EVERYBODY,, including the Government,, acknowledges that i am..

Yeah there is.. People change their minds on issues all the time.. They "Evolve" and it's usually in one direction and for legitimate reasons.. And there's the motivation.. The reasons.. THERE is where the difference lies..

You want to KNOW why Obama has gone back and forth on this issue?? CHECK the polls..

And In THIS case,, CHECK the MONEY as well.... Between the gay hold backs of campaign donations and the Clooney fundraising spectacle Obama has made MILLIONS just because he SAID something that made absolutely ZERO difference and he may very well "Evolve" backwards as he HAS done in the past if he sees a potential GAIN in doing so....

We have bigger issues to worry about Gay marriage is not one of them. We need soldiers out of Afghan. We need more jobs. The country is in financial trouble. The plight of people wanting to get married takes a backseat to those issues.

You're young and idealistic and that's the way you're SUPPOSED to be at your age and,, not to be mean or anything,, but THAT'S why we don't let 16 year olds vote here in America..

Oh, stop blaming her age... ever stop and think she may have very intelligent, grown up reasons for living Obama?
She wasn't attacking his opponents and she wasn't attacking the supporters of his opponents, so why do you people feel the need to jump on her post and not just the ones that outright challenge your beliefs? Is it because you think her age makes her an easier target?
