PUBLIC OPINION > Newsweek's 'First Gay President' Cover Crossed the Line

SodaHead News 2012/05/15 17:00:00
President Obama's public support of gay marriage was a landmark event for the LGBT community, but Newsweek's latest cover might have taken the praise a little too far: The title story, written by openly gay journalist Andrew Sullivan, was titled, "The First Gay President." Some might say Obama was "coming out of the closet" with his views, but is calling him the "first gay president" a bit of an overstep? We asked the public.

sodahead obama newsweek gay

There was a variety of reasons people voted the way they did, but in the end the majority decided it was, in fact, too far. The most obvious argument was that, well... Obama's not gay. Why would they write something like that if it's not tangibly true? Many commenters called it a lapse of journalistic integrity -- "a cheap way to get attention." On the other hand, Pulitzer Prize-winning African-American author Toni Morrison called Bill Clinton the "first Black president" in 1998, so maybe there is some level of historical awareness (and perhaps irony) present in Sullivan's title.

Liberals Don't Like It

We kind of figured this would be a divisive issue based solely on the fact that it had to do with Obama and homosexuality. However, we weren't sure which direction the controversy would go. The actual statement was made by a conservative Catholic homosexual -- an unusual demographic to begin with, and one that's (fortunately) difficult to read into. As it turns out, conservatives had Sullivan's back while liberals shook a finger.

Acceptance From Older Voters

In the same vein, there was a very sharp drop in support under the age of 35. The difference was black-and-white, with every age group below the mark showing about 76% disapproval, and every age group above showing closer to 46%. That's undeniably close to the political breakdown, so a correlation there is pretty much guaranteed. The most interesting thing about this is how quickly and clearly the politics changed at 35.

Homosexuals Won't Have It

In a 1998 issue of the New Yorker, Toni Morrison wrote of Bill Clinton, "Clinton displays almost every trope of blackness: single-parent household, born poor, working-class, saxophone-playing, McDonald's-and-junk-food-loving boy from Arkansas." Does Obama display "every trope of gayness"? That's hard to say objectively, but based on the homosexual vote, the answer seems to be no.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about Newsweek's Obama article. We'd love to hear from you!

Adolf hitler before he became persident of Germany in 1930, expressed his disdain for gay and lesbian aryans. Many church leaders in Garmany supported Adolf Hitler and his views on gay and lesbian people. In 1933 he order Germany purged, removed all gay and lesbian Aryans and sent them to retraining camps. 661,000 gay and lesbian people died in the retraining camps.

They did not at all. As you make your bed, so shall you sleep or shall I say tell me who you are dealing with/supporting and I'll tell you who you are. If you support ''gay marriage'' it is okay to be called gay and the president should be okay with it. I do not think what he did was wise. He will lose against Mitt R.

The headline is misleading because I clicked to read the article thinking he was coming out of the closet.(lol) He is just switching sides to win votes for election. If he would have said this 4 years ago I would have believed him, not now...

Hey, Newsweek is a liberal backed media and a study had been done for the purpose of sympathy for the Obama reelection campaign. People tend to support or come to the rescue of the downtrodden or under dog. People don't be fooled by this Cover story title, Obama gave his ok to do it. We are dealing with a movement that's goal is to diminish our heritage and belittle our founding Fathers. The USA freed the World of Dictators WW1 and WW2, surely we can defeat this current attack on our freedom.

No line crossed, it should point out however that Obama supports Baby murdering. I guess we are a Liberal Godless Nation with no Conscience, just as two men or women marrying getting preferential treatment which I do not like, or to be forced in a free democracy being made to accept gay marriage as normal and proper. I don't want Obama telling me it is normal and proper to kill babies, or that gay Marriage is a basic right for gays, BS, I guess peer pressure from the Hollywood party going, dope using alcohol abusing idiots, America stop supporting Hollywood movies of some and satellite TV. We need to boycott those who are tearing Down moral and ethical values. Poop hole's are not a birth canal and fetuses are not cancerous tumors, and strap on a hose is not flesh or living tissue. Sounds sick but I described it modestly. Vote all liberals out of office before we find ourselves under the control of sick minded and retaliatory vicious people/law makers and administrators.

I cant believe this; this was NOT meant to imply that Obama was gay, it was meant to imply that he was the first president to SUPPORT gays. I cant believe this is even a question. oh, and btw, for those twits that are saying that he's "pandering for gay votes", sorry, but he had the support og gays prior to this, if for no other reason than that he's NOT a republican. Probably 85% of hte homosexual population was already in his corner prior to his recent revelation:)

Yet once again the media is portraying Obama as some kind of Angelic/Messiahic Savior. What a crock. Did he just now make up his mind on the issue? Or.....Does he really believe that Gays and Lesbians are so stupid as to not realize this is simply a cunning effort to garner their votes? I mean seriously the man is running for re-election and isn't it convenient timing that he announces he's made up his mind after four years in office?

Sofa King We Todd Did. :) This reminds me of the kind of journalism that the National Enquirer likes to imbibe in. Since when just because someone advocates something does it make them a living breathing active figure of what they advocate.

So because a gay guy believes in the rights of heterosexuals, that all of sudden makes him heterosexual???? Hmmm, really now?? LOL!

They went way too far, all of which was to boost sales I'm sure. Face it...people don't read publications like they used to and sales are slumping for these guys. They needed to do something to inject their sales. The internet has all but replaced them.

This was a ridiculous and out outrageous thing to say about our president. Yes, he is your president too, even if you don't like him and pretend that he isn't.
