Chances are you're at least casually aware of Invisible Children's KONY 2012 campaign, but for the uninitiated, here's the lowdown: Joseph Kony has been wreaking havoc in Central Africa for decades, enslaving children and displacing millions. Six years ago, three filmmakers visited Uganda and witnessed the devastation, vowing to do something about it. They founded Invisible Children, and KONY 2012 is the latest phase in their awareness movement.
Within a week of the video going viral, it was facing enormous amounts of criticism. Everything about the campaign was placed under a microscope. Is the video accurate? How do they plan on stopping Kony? Can it work? How are they using the money? Last week, al Jazeera screened the video in Uganda for people who were affected by Kony, and they seemed to have a problem with the video's attitude, claiming it promotes the idea that Americans know more about their struggle than they do. In light of that, we asked the public if it still supports the campaign.

In light of that, we asked the public if it still supports the campaign.
When we polled people right after the video blew up it had a lot more support, but it takes time to sort out things like this. Optimism quickly turned to skepticism. Is there anything wrong with raising awareness about Kony? Not necessarily. But it's important that we understand the issue fully before throwing your weight into an intervention campaign with vague goals. Some respondents completely discounted awareness campaigns, while other were content to just poke holes in KONY. Everyone agrees Kony should be captured, but most doubt if it can be done via Facebook.
Teens Still Show Some Support
Teens were the strongest supporters when the video came out, helping the campaign to go viral within weeks, and while the majority have turned their back on the campaign, they still show the most support. Voters around the age of 50 were the most suspicious.
Conservatives Keep Away
Conservatives were one of the few demographics to show suspicion right off the bat. They were mostly against it in the first place, likely because of the implied U.S. intervention, and now that the lid's been blow, support dropped to negligible numbers.
Smokers Can't Stand the Campaign
There was one other group that showed a distinct lack of support for KONY 2012, but it was a strange one. Smokers were 21% less likely than nonsmokers to support it. The best explanation we can come up with is a general skepticism among smokers. Sartre, Russell, Schroedinger, Newton... Maybe.
