PUBLIC OPINION > Just Legalize Marijuana, Already!

SodaHead News 2012/04/20 20:00:00
It's 420, and you know what that means! If you don't, April 20 is the holy day of the stoner subculture, a date decided somewhat arbitrarily by the stoner lifestyle, which dictates that 4:20 is the ideal time to smoke. Now, we can't really ask who smokes -- it's still illegal, and some people don't want to give away that much info on the very public interwebs. So we asked the next-best question: Should it be legal?

weed 420 sodahead

Wait... what were we talking about? Oh, right. Marijuana. Most respondents are for it -- or at least for legalizing it. There's a difference. One commenter wrote, "I have no interest in smoking marijuana but it seems like common sense that it should be legal if alcohol is." Where were all those voters when it went on the ballot in California? Probably the same couch they're on today. Don't worry, you'll get 'em next time.

Conservative Conflict

The only demographic with a formidable sample size that voted against the legalization of marijuana was conservatives. They were 21% less supportive than Christians and 45% less likely than libertarians. The most frequent arguments against the legalization of marijuana were that it's a gateway drug and it's already illegal.

Males Lead the Charge

Gender didn't create much of a gap, but it was enough to show that males are more likely to support the legalization of marijuana. Sad news for stoner guys. Their dating options are perhaps a little more limited than those of stoner gals. Then again, you could quit whenever you want to. Right?

Smokers Support Smokers

When the legalization of pot is being discussed, it's often compared to alcohol and cigarettes. Each substance has its pros and cons, and marijuana's cons don't seem to be as detrimental as the other two. And those things are legal! Even drinkers and smokers can see that.

Legalization is long overdue. Law officers would not have to spend countless hours looking for marijuana fields while risking their lives. States would bring in millions of dollars in tax revenue. Thousands of police officers would be freed up so they could have more time scraping up the bodies of those killed by drunk drivers drinking the legal alcohol.

I'm not really sure, seems like people tend to be apathetic about it, but it's ridiculous that people are getting thrown in jail for something that is arguably less of a threat to society than alcohol. I know that age has a big thing to do with it, the older people who were around during the 60s pretty much hate it because of the hippie movement. The worst thing about pot smokers is they're dirty, but honestly you can't make something illegal because it makes people into slobs.

They can't control a plant.Even by legalizing the usage and possession of marijuana and keeping the growing illegal, the law would still be broken. And the government could not control it.They make more money by keeping it illegal.

I personally don't smoke marijuana and don't think it's as fun and cool as people make it out to be but so many people smoke weed that the fact that it's still illegal is beyond me, not to mention cigarettes and alcohol are legal, and those are both things that are terrible for you and can eventually kill you, has weed been known to kill people??

Just say it is legalized for the sick people. How many of those sick people would be safe if any of the stonies knew they had it. If idiots are killing others because of it now, they would kill a sick person that needs it just so they could get stoned. It does cause death in various ways.

I'm a stonie, I have a medical cannabis license and where I live there are more dispensaries than liquor stores. I live next to a dispensary which probably sells several pounds a day, judging from the amout of cars in their parking lot at any given time.
I think you have more expirience with drunks and junkies.
We dont have many of those any more, here anyway.
    Maybe they moved near you.
    Where do you live?
Don't tell me Gary, Indiana, armpit of the world.

We can tell you are a stonie....all your remarks about killing babies, shooting people. You try to look like a tuffy, but your not getting thru. You sound more like a weak coward hiding behind a comment page. The way you are commenting...i certainly wouldn't want to be anywhere near you if you are stoned . You have made it very clear in all your comments that you use that crap. You haven't impressed me one bit. I think you are disgusting. And no, I don't live in Gary Indiana.

Wow, you sure told me off! You're the one who wants to keep it illegal so Im wondering what the punishment should be. How willing are you to kill people to stop them for getting high?
You do know that people have gotten the death penalty here in Texas for cannabis.
You are the one who has the incredible arrogance to think that because you do not like a plant (fear) you want to banish a whole species of plant life from the planet.
A species of plant that produces a very complex chemical with specific receptors in the human brain.
You want to do that because you think you know whats best for others.

There is a cure for your insanity

Ok" so even if it becomes legalized; a lot of twist and toots have to be worked out by the government, as to how it will be packaged, supplied, distributed, how do they select growers that would supply the trees to them to manufacture and clean, and chop and grind up like tobacco; so it can be rolled, boxed, packaged and be ready for public consumption to smoke, or buy bulk form for cooking in recipes (cancer patients and patients who use it for stimulating appetites). Kind of leaves everyone scratchin' their heads; wondering if its worth all the fuss. Or, or; states can just tax the street suppliers. Here's how it would work...street suppliers would register as a supplier of marijuana, pay a registration fee and receive a pictured card or badge with their registration number in barcode that has to be scanned if accousted by law enforcement; that can then scan their mj id badge and find that he or she is legit to sell mj.
It would be complicated all the way around.
Lets talk about it and share ideas about how it can be legalized and who would be the seller of it. Though big brothet is watching they can learn from this if they choose to legalize marijuana.
Do I smoke? A: no; but have friends that are prescribed marinol to stimulate appetite.

The only that that thinking produces, is one more black market. Treat it like beer & wine. You're allowed to make so much.

I understand what you're saying; but it is already black market and is right now considered illegal to sell, have, possess and smoke especially in public. You are right" tax it like beer and wine of course.
But the big question remains???If government legalize it, what kinds of restrictions will apply in the selling of it; if controlled wholly by government and states individually to make the rules that would apply ie..age( what age would be legal for weed?)

I am definitely for it. If alcohol is legal then pot should be too. Alcohol has been proven to cause more physical damage to the person drinking it than pot. Also, while under the influence of alcohol, more people have caused injury to other people than those under the influence of pot.

    Agree"
If marijuana is legalized; will drug testing be eliminated? That is something to be considered; and the operation of machinery if under the influence of weed or alcohol.

I've already encountered that situation with one of our employees at work who tested positive for pot during a random drug screening. He presented a cannabis card (medical marijuana is legal in California), I showed it to my boss, my boss said too bad, don't want him on the job. Operating power tools, climbing ladders, etc...is too dangerous to do under the influence of anything.

Too many people profit off keeping marijuana illegal. But hopefully someday it will be legal. Shame this country never learned from prohibition.

I think everybody is on board for marijuana because it's not a synthetic drug; where as crack, cocaine, meth all of that is lab produced. Poppy weed marijuana is a plant and no additives are needed, just cultured and grown and dried out like tobacco and smoked.
  • Korgull barby k... 2012/04/21 11:07:32

That still doesn't change the fact there is no real reason not to legalize any of the other ones. Well, except for "it can hurt you!" which is an absurd reason, considering the fact that if you were to ban everything that can cause harm through repetitive use or over-indulgence, we'd have almost nothing legal left.

And some would argue that the modern idea of "weed" is hardly natural, or at least good for you. You'd probably have better luck with some of those synthetic drugs than with what some people consider good, 'natural' weed these days.
