PUBLIC OPINION > Humanoid Robot Is Nothing to Worry About

SodaHead News November 04, 2011 19:00:00
The geniuses at Boston Dynamics recently unveiled their groundbreaking humanoid robot, PetMan, which can walk at a brisk 4.4 miles per hour and keep its balance when pushed. For now, developers are using it to test the durability of chemical warfare protection suits. In the future, they hope to equip PetMan to handle hazardous materials and fight fires, eliminating the need to risk human life.

But there's a flip side to the PetMan coin: His life-like movements are eerily similar to the humanoid machines in dystopian films like "Terminator" and "I, Robot." With technology improving at an exponential rate, some of us can't help but wonder if this is indictive of a dark turn in the future.

So, naturally, we asked SodaHeads for their thoughts.

Robot That Walks Like a Human: Wonderful or Worrisome?

petman

68% Think PetMan Is Wonderful

About two-thirds of respondents are happy to welcome PetMan into the world, conspiracy theories be damned. One commenter pointed out that it's artificial intelligence, not physical capability, that we should be most worried about. She wrote, "I don't see any danger until they start to think like a human." And that's still a long ways off. Although, the Internet as a whole is said to work something like the human brain, so it might not be as far off as you'd think.

chart

Women Are More Worried

Men seem to embrace the technology more easily. Though women overall still think PetMan is a wonderful invention, 41% of them said they're worried, compared to just 23% of men. But don't confuse worry for fear. One female voter summed it up nicely: "Just because we can, doesn't mean we should."

IT at Odds With Health Care

82% of IT workers think the PetMan is wonderful, but only 29% of health care workers support it. Maybe IT is looking forward to a new career market, and health care is worried about the potential carnage of a cyborg takeover. (Either way, more jobs for someone.)

Liberals Look Forward

We know where conservatives and liberals stand on social and economic issues, but what about technology? Liberal voters were most likely to vote "wonderful" at 83%. Progressives were right behind them at 79%, and conservatives were most skeptical with just 64% in favor.

So long as they don't become self aware, they advance them for war and they don't fall into the wrong hands. Now if they program or whatnot they might see the Human race as the reason to world conflicts and take it upon themselves to "cleanse" Earth from evil...yknow like what Humans already do to each other because of differences, greed or other personal desires. Theres an up/down to this believe it or not

There is potential for both good and bad in technology of any type. This particular technology has many uses that may or maynot be good depending on ones perspective. As for me I certaintly don't want a robotic nurse or doctor but robotic surgeries are happening around the world, under the supervision of humans. Robotic warriors would save human lives but then you would need autonomous robots that can see the situation and make decisions based on the information they take in. As long as they did not aquire the ability to form opinions or the AI didn't eveolve on its own they would do just fine. So I guess I don't have a problem with the technology with caveats.

Like I said before, doesn't make much difference to me. We already have robots that vacuum floors, robots build our vehicles, robots that fly, robots doing this, that, and the other thing. Making one that walks like a human is simply aesthetical. That is unless we use them for things like what this robot is for:

    http://www.smartplanet.com/vi...

    http://news.sky.com/home/tech...

    I think it's awesome.

I also think people who worry about cyborgs taking over have been watching too many Terminator movies and I,Robot movies. Irrational at best. Worst scenario would be if a robot went squirrely because of some programming error or technical failure and that could be easily remedied by a taser or a electro-magnetic impulse generator. Electrical parts can't take spikes of energy very well. Parts start frying fast.

It's coming, get use to it.
It’s about the same thing when the Automobile hit the streets and people wanted auto drivers to pull to the side and disassemble their cars because the horses were frightened.

    It’s called small finite minds.

You’re going to get replaced with a machine sooner or later.

If there is energy enough humans won’t have to do labor nor will anyone want them to..

You can move on and have more time understanding and solving the world and our universe's secrets and laws.

People who can’t work at a higher mental level will be liquefied into protein meal for the people who can.

Don’t worry; their stupid asses are not going to even know it when it happens.

To oppose these because "Dey'll terk er jirbs!" is rather selfish and shortsighted. Computers and internet probably reduce the need for secretaries and librarians, but what makes the technology bad when it does nothing but advance our society forward? Especially when the tech is lifesaving.

So technology is marching forward as it always has. For all of you concerned about robots taking over have you ever heard of an EMP Electro Magnetic Pulse there are Meany ways to create one go on YouTube there are videos on how to create small ones. For the jobs being replaced every turn of the century something's created and people get outmoded and move on but the innovations usually have a positive effect. (for example the printing press helped spread the ideas of the reformation but left a few monks and clergymen unemployed ) Simply if your job is replaced you should of got educated with the loans and government funding available their s virtually no excuse If you can't find a job make one. Sure the economy sucks but it also sucked when Steve Jobs started apple in his foster parent s garage.

I'm not a fan of this at all. Conspiracy, which I think is a legitimate concern aside, in a time where humans are facing unemployment....why exactly are we making robots that can do the jobs humans can???

As a volunteer fire fighter....I'm rather opposed to a robot doing what I do for free, for fun, and to give back to my community.

People in charge want robots because when they work WELL they do what their programmed to do and do it excellently over and over.

They don't call in sick on Friday or Monday.
They don't ask for more money than they are worth.
All they need is some electricity, lubrication and a part now and again.

They don’t vote stupid ass-holes into office like humans do. Example: Nov. 2008.

I find it odd the the liberals who dont like religion are supporting the creation of beings in their own image. When someone says dont worry, then worry. Ethics should at least try to keep pace with the development of technology. But its neat.

What could go wrong? A bunch of wires and circuit boards turn on humans......C'mon its unrealistic. It makes for a good movie but in reality all you have to do is take out the battery. Also its only a circuit board and wires, it can't think for itself and only knows what its programmed. Unless someone changes the programming it can't do anything else but what its told.
