PUBLIC OPINION > Hugging Is Definitely Not 'Gateway Sexual Activity'

SodaHead News 2012/05/02 16:00:00
Tennessee passed a unique and controvesial law recently that makes it possible for parents to take legal action against teachers who condone "gateway sexual activity." The problem is, no one is quite sure what "gateway sexual activity" is. That's how it's worded in the law, which means it's open to interpretation. Do they mean hugging? Holding hands? Kissing? Groping? What are we talking about, here? We took it to the obvious extreme and asked the public if hugging, cuddling, and holding hands -- the most basic forms of romantic physical contact -- could be considered "gateway sexual activity."

gateway sex sodahead

For the sake of laid back teachers, let's hope Tennessee courts agree with the public. Only one in four thinks hugging, holding hands, and cuddling could be considered gateways to sexual activity, whatever that means. Even some of those responses were sarcastic. The Top Opinion wrote, "Yes! Add to that walking, talking, touching, seeing, breathing, and being human. I believe they are all gateways to sexual activity." So what could be considered "gateway sex"? Some said kissing, others said naked wrestling. A couple people said marijuana. (They were a little confused.) Just not hugging, for crying out loud!

Men Think Hugs Mean More

All of the demographics were pretty much in agreement that hugging and cuddling is a safe distance from sex, but there were a few interesting differences. For instance, men were nearly twice as likely to say that kind of activity was a gateway to sex. That could offer some insight into the minds of men, or it could just represent the protective father demographic.

Teens Think It's Silly

The strongest correlation was, not surprisingly, age, and there was a sharp change of heart at about age 25. On average, voters 25 and up were 3.5 times as likely to think of hugging and cuddling as gateways to sex. That's even more than the difference between parents and non-parents, married and single, liberal and conservative, and atheist and Christian.

Conservatives More Than Christians

In the comments, a lot of opponents treated this like a religious issue. However, based on the demographics it was more political than religious. Conservative voters were 7% more likely than Christians to think of hugging as a gateway sexual activity, and liberals were 4% less likely than atheists. Though religion and politics do often go hand-in-hand, there's clearly more to it.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about Tennessee's new law. We'd love to hear from you!

Outlawing affection... something humanity needs to show more of getting disallowed. Can someone please slap the old men making these rules. YOUR GRAND DAUGHTERS ARE NOT GOING TO GET PREGNANT FROM HUGGING! Who ever makes these dumbs things should go to a health class and get a good learning about sex education. It's there for a reason and it appear sthey need that education more than teens with this bullscheisse.

Wish I could give you a zero rave, as you are only 19 years old, and I would guess, NOT A VIRGIN. This law is for under age, young, school age children. Maybe, if that law was in effect, you would still be a virgin. Kids as young as nine years old are having oral sex, and promoting STD's. That is the real problem. Not about the GENERAL PUBLIC hugging.

Funny thing about Tennessee is that they do have quite a bit of sweaty farm-boys. The sweatier, the more likely sexual activity would happen. LOL.

Kind of the reason why even the preppiest of girls love guys who work jobs like construction, farming, etc. Because they can't get enough of their smell. Though I'm not average, most guys make me want to faint... Though I seem to be turned on by a certain type of smell myself. I still barely can stand it, though there are guys that don't smell that bad. That some may think wreak, LOL. I guess it depends.

well thats a part of human nature no? Shouldent we just teach kids how to use a condum and birth control? Its not that we need to get the chains out and tell them none of this cuz they are going to give you the middle finger and walk away saying your an idiot. ((thats what i would do if a teacher said that to me))

First I'd teach about the side effects of birth control and the fact condoms can break, both can fail LOL.
I'd like to tell them the importance of saving themselves for their future husband/wife. How abstinence can make you and your relationship stronger. If the guy/girl breaks up with you because you won't make out them as much or have intercourse with them. They are not for you.

Well thats a good point but why not share the most intemite part of yourself after you HAVE waited? Like i dident wait i was taken advantige of and it hurt yes. Now though i am stronger and can say NO. Abstinence is not an anwser ((for me)) sometimes its beautiful to make love with someone you love wether it lasts or wether its short. Your not going to live forever so share love as love should be shared. Ya and i DO agree with you. If i guy or girl cant wait for you then drop him like a hot potato cuz thats nothin but a peice of crap thats not ready to settle down. Yes with this you do have to be careful. But i say if you truely feel as if you love someone then think long and hard if you want to share that part of yourself because to much of one thing isent good. What if you die? You never got to experience the beauty of sharing your body with the man/woman you love. ((also condums do break and yes birth controll can have side-effects there is also the morning after pill which can make you sick because its taking the sperm from the womans body and killing it. But all three and there shouldent be even a 1% chance of pregnancy. Birthcontroll is a very good method and you should only take it if comfortable with the given side-effects also everyone is different and not everyone has any side-effects.)) But why cut yourself off from such a beautiful thing? Even marrige can faulter and die.

Marriage is a beautiful thing too, some relationships/people just don't have the strength to keep it together. You can have sex with anyone but marriage it takes true love and commitment. Relationships surprise you, not many survive after someones cheats. There have been some very forgiving people.

Sometimes self control is the best birth control, I just don't feel like giving myself away to a person before I know they are the one is right.

Osaka, that's a fair point. But to challenge your argument, people will have sex. That's a natural thing.

Imagine you were fresh out of school, never had a job in your life, and the first place that hires you hires you for a position working with people. Great, you just got a job, but you have no idea what to expect or how to behave or anything.

So you show up your first day, and they immediately put you working with the general population. No training, no experience with people, and no idea of what might happen. Your first day goes well enough, you think you've done great, but nearing the end of the day, a customer approaches you and is incredibly rude and derogatory to you. Now, as a brand new employee with no understanding of how to interact with people in this situation while under abnormally high amounts of stress, you may react in a rather visceral way, say, for example, striking the customer.

Clearly, this is not something that you want to have happen, but it just did. Had you had proper training and guidance, it may have been avoided, but they threw you out there with nothing under your belt and expected the best.

It's the same with sex, contraception may fail, but not knowing about contraception in the first place guarantee's that it won't have the opportunity to fail. Th...

It's the same with sex, contraception may fail, but not knowing about contraception in the first place guarantee's that it won't have the opportunity to fail. The best form of sex education is promoting both contraception and abstinence. Because neither one is inherently wrong or evil or bad, they both need to be understood. I have several friends who threw around the "I'm going to save myself for marriage" for years, who all have ended up having premarital sex. It's not bad, they aren't bad people, these are just people who have made a decision with the proper understanding and education required to make that decision.

Surely 'gateway sex acts' are a normal part of life. Start with the innocence of hand holding and progress up. Are they suggesting we ban normal childhood growth and curiosity? Do we really want kids growing up knowing nothing of the affection that should come with sex? To me this seems counter-productive. Hugging is a sign of affection, it isn't sex. We all hug. But hugging, if we are using the term 'gateway sex act', is an important part of people learning about affection. Otherwise kids are going to have sex, without affection. At the end of the day, teens will have sex. That's what teens do. I did it, as did many others. It's an enjoyable thing to do, and we shouldn't be teaching young people otherwise. Teach of the risks involved in sex, don't ban ridiculous things. Banning things just makes people, especially teens, want to do it more.

To be fair, laws need to be clear and unambiguous to all the people who are expected to follow them. How did this law even pass if it's subject to arbitrary interpretation? It would never have passed in a real democracy.

Believe it or not, there are laws like that in Britain, introduced by the former Labour home secretary David Blunkett. Would you believe that it is against the law for under-16s to kiss? Thankfully, to my knowledge, these laws have never been put into practise and I hope they never will. Many people aslo don't seem to know that these laws exist.

I hope you're not suggesting that it's okay as long as the police decide not to press it. I'm not comfortable with there being any more laws than is absolutely necessary. At the same time, police aren't supposed to cherry pick which laws they want to enforce and which they want to ignore because it invites corrupt and abuse.

The purpose of government should be to maintain a minimum of laws, each with a minimum of words, so that the average person can read and understand them all at once. I'd even go so far as to devise some kind of language or code that allows lawmakers to express the logic of the law with mathematical precision, like a programming language, so as to eliminate ambiguity, fallacies and errors.

Wow, I think this whole post is suggestive and kind of making me hot! Oh yeah, I forgot to tell ya, I'm from Tennessee!
This is so stupid! Pretty soon we'll all be bouncing around in giant bubbles so we won't touch each other! Most everyone knows when something is inappropriate...a hug that lasts a bit too long...a kiss on the cheek that slides over to your lips...someone's hand down your pants...etc.
If a teacher allows dry humping in the classroom, I think that something should be done, but holding hands, patting each other on the back, and hugging are just simple acts of human kindness!
    Just my opinion!

very sad. Sometimes People ( especially teenagers) Just need a hug. A simple action can comfort alot of sadness that happens these days, I think schools need to promote more acts of kindness, & its OK to comfort eachother. I worked in a daycare center where we hugged our kids everyday, in many cases those where the only hugs they got.

Until they realistically examine teen sexuality, they're not going to solve any "problems". Hugging is the very last thing a walking hard-on wants. Now, if that walking hard-on has his hands down the hugging girl's pants, THEN you've got an issue. But, I'm going to guess being a "gateway" is moot.

Young couples dating is 'training' for later life. Hugging is just one small part of it... As with anything, too much of one area, creates a deficit in another. We're never going to stop young people from all physicality. Teach them, respect them, trust them...

This question is o.k. but it isn't telling the whole story. Of course hugging is not a gateway to sexual activity. However throw in a public school system that demands teaching kids, in an entertaining way, to put condoms on bananas while neglecting to teach them how to read, then yes, it is a gateway to sexual activity!
