PUBLIC OPINION > Child Circumcision Should Not Be Allowed

SodaHead News 2012/06/29 21:00:00
A controversial court ruling in Germany classified child circumcision as "grievous bodily harm," upsetting religious communities over what some say is a religious right. The bulk of the issue falls on the way circumcision affects children who are too young to make their own decision. However, it has been a religious practice for thousands of years and many feel it should be protected as such.

sodahead circumcision

This was an extremely heated debate, but after more than 1,300 votes, the public sided against circumcision. Those most concerned about freedom of religion were supportive of continuing to allow the practice, but the Top Opinion argued, "Religious freedom is about the baby's religion. I don't see how he can have one at that age." It's a delicate issue containing a perfect storm of controversy.

The Religious Response

As you might expect, the demographic breakdown shows religion was the backbone of the issue. Jewish and Muslim voters were almost unanimously supportive. Christian voters weren't as convinced, but still supported it with about two-thirds. By the time we got to the atheist vote, support was down to a mere 19%.

Underage Opposition

Nearly every demographic was split on this one, but next to religion and politics, age was one of the strongest divisions. There was a clear break at about age 35 -- below that age, support dropped nearly a third. Evidently, the younger generations are either not as convinced of the benefits, or not as concerned with tradition.

Men Don't Mind the Snip

Oddly enough, those directly affected by circumcision (males) were more likely to support it. It's also interesting to note that female voters were more likely to oppose circumcision, as there was some discussion over what women prefer... if you know what we mean.

To me, I care not about tradition, it is abuse. The child has no say because an infant CANNOT say for himself.

It should be illegal until an age where a child can decide for himself - preferably adulthood really - as long as it is HIS decision, not the parents just because THEY want him snipped.

Ha! not sure if i am a good con or a bad con. I just finished a 10 day cruise around the Caribbean, jumping of pirate ships and swimming with dolphins.

Dang it.. I need my Jamaican bartenders and my Bahama Mamas. I didn't think once about Obama or Romney.

i will tell you one thing that I noticed. The citizens of the rest of the world are just as rude as they say us Americans are. The Europeans... I think these were from Norway.... Forget about it... I was flabbergasted. They get my all time rudeness award.

Yes I am the guy that still believe in chivalry.

Yeah I think it will be Rubio, at least he will get first shot to accept or turn down.

When I lived in New York my neighbor was Jewish. I remember being invited to his Bar Mitzvah. Even though I am your typical WASP. I was fascinated by their tradition and 30-40 years later still remember being there and eating locks. For a little red necked fried chicken loving fool it was quite an accomplishment.

All of my Protestant religious upbringing (my grandfather was a lay minister) taught me to share in others religious beliefs and be respectful of their beliefs.

My Male children will all be circumcised, it is a religious freedom and you can all cray about it as much as you want.

    Female circumcision though?
That actually more of a punishment than a health issue.

What you're saying is that women own their bodies and should be given religious freedom, but men do not. It is sexist to give a right to a certain set of people, and deny it to the rest. If a man wants to cut HIMSELF for his beliefs, then he may go ahead and do it, no one should say anything against that. The most common form of FGC, btw, is a tiny nick, and far less invasive than amputating what would be 15 square inches of erogenous tissue, and tens of thousands of sexually responsive nerves.

The foreskin is more than just skin . And also it was brought back to America to stop boys from (enjoying ) themselves. Trying not to get graphic , but being circumcised is why many guys need lotion ... due to the bodies natural lubrication being taken away.

Non religious male circumcision in the US started as a punishment to prevent kids from masturbating. The doctors knew back then that it made masturbation more difficult and sex less pleasurable. Today they keep denying it to keep selling surgeries.

Search "Dr. Kellogg and circumcision" if you want to learn the history. It was very popular in every English country, became much less popular in the 21st century.

    BS.
Either way is fine, and male circumcision does not do any real harm.
just because the German's want to live in the past is no reason for the rest of the world to follow.

It does not, so what is the big deal? Circumcision goes back to the Jews in the bible, and really does no harm.

Except for babies who die from it (1 in 25,000 in the U.S), or end up with a mutilated penis, or a botched circumcision. Or loss of sensation (which varies from individual to individual). Or pain during erections. Should I continue?

Stoning promiscuous women also goes back to the Jews in the Bible. Should it be legal because of that?

I am sorry for your loss.
My youngest daughter had a miscarriage her first time being pregnant.

I wonder how sensation is registered. If one were circumcised and never had had the sensations of a non circumcised penis, how would they be able to compare?
The same goes for painful erections.
All a bunch of BS if you ask me.

I am sorry for your loss, my youngest daughter had a miscarriage during her first pregnancy.

If one is circumcised, how would they be able to compare sensations with one that is not.
Sensation is not something that has a definition that can be related between people, as we all feel things differently.
All BS if you ask me.
No sexual malfunctions (or painful anything) from this circumcised male.
The forskin really is like an appendics, it's there but really has litlte usefulness.

Circumcision is not in the top ten causes of death in infants or male children.
Accidents are the leading cause of death in children.

Death in young children caused by playground equipment, both at home and in schools, is 45 times higher than death by circumcision, so by your reasoning we should outlaw school recess and all playground activities.

    Other info:
    Mortality
    1-4 years of age
    Number of deaths: 4,450
    Deaths per 100,000 population: 26.1
    5-14 years of age
    Number of deaths: 5,651
    Deaths per 100,000 population: 13.9

    1-4 years of age
    Leading causes of death
    Accidents (unintentional injuries)
    Congenital malformations, deformations
    5-14 years of age

Major cause of death in young children is not circumcision.
It is not even in the top ten
The leading cause of death in children ages 1-10 is accidents and of those the majority occur on playground type equipment both at home and in public places.
By your reasoning, we should outlaw all school recess and take down all the swing sets and other equipment.

The other part of your post "..loss of sensation (which varies from individual to individual). Or pain during erections" is just BS from the get go.
Show me the studies and how they were preformed.

What I meant by "in the past" is that the idea of not doing it is the sign of a regressive culture, living in a state of denial.

I think that governments should butt out. Parents should be allowed to raise their children without interferance from the government. Governments have a job and it's not to decide how parents should or should not raise their children.

They are amputating 50% of the skin of the "pecker" and most of the nerves that go into the pecker, that are there for future sexual function.

And in some cases, yes, they end up literally amputating the complete penis, or the full glans, or 1/2 of the glans... It happens.

So at least we got the are not amputating the pecker.

Next. Hmmm i seems to have full sexual function. I had 3 wonderful little girls. Unless my wife is schlupin the mailman. My 3 brothers had a total of 12 kids. So out of 4 boys.. 100% all shave sexual function. Strange how our circumcision didn't affect us.

Yes I am sure it happens. I am sure it is a very very very low %. The doc should be fired and his license revoked.

Stop living in the past your parents didn't know what they were doing. You are in the 21st century we have condoms and soap use them. Stop cutting babies.

My dad left at 10. I haven't seen him is 40 years. I was raised by the streets because my mom had to work her butt off to put food on the table for 5 kids because she refused to accept government aid. My dad was a schmuck and quit his job because he didn't want to pay child support.

So don't give me that psychobabble BS.

Now I won;t even argue female circumcision vs male. There is no comparison. They are done for two totally different reasons. One is male dominance over the female. There is no comparison in the two.

    Got milk?
