PUBLIC OPINION > Atheists Think Apes Can Outthink Humans; Christians, Not So Much

SodaHead News 2012/06/26 15:00:00
Scientists are investing an increasing amount of time and money into the study of animal cognition, and with nearly every new investment comes a new discovery. More and more, it's becoming apparent that we've been underestimating animals, and that's especially true with apes. Recently, studies have shown that there is only a 1.3% difference between human DNA and the DNA of a bonobo ape. We asked the public if apes could possibly outthink humans.

sodahead

Believe it or not, this was a split decision. Maybe apes can outthink humans, after all. Some respondents did take this as an opportunity to joke about specific types of people, but there were plenty of serious believers. In fact, some suggested maybe other animals can outthink humans, too. Of course, it depends on the person as much as the animal. As many respondents were adamant that it's just not plausible.

Drinkers Don't Think So

Drinkers were a good 16% less likely to believe that apes can outthink humans. Interestingly enough, alcohol is one thing apes have in common with humans. Some species of monkey that have been exposed to alcohol not only enjoy the substance, but express as many attitudes toward alcohol as humans. Some just drink to relax, some become addicted, and some won't touch the stuff.

Atheists Are Convinced

In some ways, this poll is predisposed to intrigue some people, and turn others off. A major tenet of some religions, particularly western religions, is that humans were created special. On the other hand, a major tenet of science is that humans evolved directly from apes. Where you stand on that paradigm is likely to affect how you respond to the question.

Men Have No Faith in Monkeys

Men were a bit more reluctant to agree that apes could ever outthink humans, while women were a bit more willing. It could be that men have a little more pride in human achievement, or it could be that women can better see the flaws in human achievement. It's not a huge difference, though, so whatever the reason, it's of marginal value.

If you'd like to vote on this question, dig deeper into the demographics, or engage in existing discussion about the topic, visit our poll about apes. We'd love to hear from you!

Sundance, I rest my case. When you didn't like my opinion, you resorted to profanity and the system shut you down. Now, if you had been civil, you could have gotten your point across. So tell me,how does that make you any better than a grunting, stick swinging ape?

Rest your case, when you have made one. So far, all you did was insult me. Now I am not sure how the rest of the world reacts to such behavior, but I for one, don't get it. I am so tired of people picking out of a post (completely out of context), just what they want to attack, and arbitrarily do so. And I will admit that this kind of behavior will elicit a certain amount of ardor on my behalf. Now yes, I was offensive, and yes I apologize for that. I made it clear, that I thought the post was offensive to Atheists and Christians alike, and that was all. Then, as if I had committed some sin, I was inundated by arbitrary and baseless arguments and insults. So..Guess what? I am human, and do not like to be attacked. Should you (being anyone my friend, and not you alone) actually have an intelligent, relevant argument, I would be more than happy to discuss this in a civil manner. The fore mentioned arguments do not fit the criteria for serious discussion.

So, care to take ( with me) a step back, and actually see if we can make a real, informed debate out of this? I would be happy to do just that. Either way, accept this as sincere, as it is meant...Just a thought...

Aetheists also think man is related to an ape because some paleontologist found a jaw bone; so they got a CSI type guy to recreate what the jawbone may have been attached to and VOILA it looked just like an ape; a man's jawbone on a critter that looked like an ape; it "WAS" a damn ape but they never corrected that. weird science

I well remember that. It was at that time that I cancelled my National Geographic subscription. They put a rendering of the so-called ape-man on their cover. Bogus science. Sad.

Did you know that not ONE of the "middle stages" of the so-called evolution has ever been found; they have never found ANY progression even in single cell aquatic life. They found what looks like a 1 million year old horse and try to say it evolved into today's horse but nothing in the middle; never have they found anything. If evolution were true it would be ongoing; not stopping here and now.

Apes can definitely outwit and out think some humans. As the saying goes; "you can fool some of the people some of the time, you can fool some of the people all of the time but you can't fool all the people all the time" unless they are liberal progressives.

Maybe little things like pulling a knob and a banana pops out but I don't think an ape will ever write a book.

Loves the fact that ignorant atheists think if they can prove apes 'could' possible be smarter then humans it instantly disproves the Bible and the entire Christian faith...try again kids. Your attempts astound no-one but yourselves. Try following some of your own principles and getting educated on the belief systems you rebuke, then you might realize how science and religion co-exist in harmony. But I would not want to hurt your precious heads too much...I know how numb they have become from hours of family guy and browsing reddit.

Well we may believe that, theres one huge flaw in the athiest ideal. i understand that most atheists believe earth was first just a big rock, that formed by getting hit by other rocks, but there was no life. And that at one point in time it was suddenly here. I was told certain chemicals binded to cause this, but if theres one thing in school ilearned, its that youcant take a nonliving thing and make it a true living thing.

How about this. Actually, she is spot on. The word atheist (Atheos), means simply, "without Gods". Anything you add to the interpretation, is simply "your" view of Atheism. For as many flavors religion has, there are as many Atheistic views. I am sure ( from previous experience), that there are those who sit on the fence. They believe the universe was built (or engineered) by intelligent design, regardless of their belief that no "God" exists in the equation. So, to arbitrarily remove someones idea, or judge them for said, makes you one of the same bigoted zealots you "Atheists" bitch so much about....Just a thought...

PS...So, as you are wrong, Who the hell is indoctrinating you?

Standard Atheist fallback 'unicorns' 'fairly tales' blah blah GARBAGE! The TOPIC here if you bother to read is about APES INTELLIGENCE. The fact Atheists immediately start rabbiting off about how evolution and the intelligence of apes disproves religion is why they are ignorant. If you want to start a debate on the levels of ignorance between the two, start your own dam topic. Stick to the point, and the point in this instance is Atheists who make those comments are totally ignorant of the fact evolution and religion do NOT discredit each other. So yes I will call you ignorant and ill CONTINUE to call you ignorant on this topic.

I luv the way those religious nuts have no facts or proof of their beliefs, and the only excape they have is to say "You prove it isnt" LMAO.. When one makes outrages claims one should be able to prove those claims

Whether you are a Christian or not, we can all agree that the truth is important. Our concept of what is true is the basis upon which our daily decisions are made. That is why any claim a person makes should only be respected if it is based on current empirical evidence and reasoning, not on opinions, traditions, authority, or revelation. Many claims contained within the Bible are not based on and are contradictory to current empirical evidence and reasoning. That is why Christianity is harmful, and we need to stop making it socially acceptable to believe that the Bible is a source of truth.

Name ONE that does, without any doubt,,,,,,,,,Sure they prove some places actually exist, and maybe even some actual personages, It would have to have some factual stuff in it to make all the fairy tales plausable.... The wizard of Oz has factual true places in it also... Still doesnt make the story true.......

Just like Jesus of Nazareth... Yep Nazareth exists, but it didnt exist during the time of the fabled Jesus.. Nazareth wasnt in existance untill around the 2nd Century.. Therefor the story of Jesus being from Nazareth is False.......

Who really knows? Diverse studies lead to surprising results. Apes cannot speak like us, but they are able to learn the sign language for deaf. They can further anticipate like taking tools with them, for instance. They might evolve further, although, I doubt that they will outthink adult humans.
