PUBLIC OPINION > Atheists Think Apes Can Outthink Humans; Christians, Not So Much

SodaHead News 2012/06/26 15:00:00
Scientists are investing an increasing amount of time and money into the study of animal cognition, and with nearly every new investment comes a new discovery. More and more, it's becoming apparent that we've been underestimating animals, and that's especially true with apes. Recently, studies have shown that there is only a 1.3% difference between human DNA and the DNA of a bonobo ape. We asked the public if apes could possibly outthink humans.

sodahead

Believe it or not, this was a split decision. Maybe apes can outthink humans, after all. Some respondents did take this as an opportunity to joke about specific types of people, but there were plenty of serious believers. In fact, some suggested maybe other animals can outthink humans, too. Of course, it depends on the person as much as the animal. As many respondents were adamant that it's just not plausible.

Drinkers Don't Think So

Drinkers were a good 16% less likely to believe that apes can outthink humans. Interestingly enough, alcohol is one thing apes have in common with humans. Some species of monkey that have been exposed to alcohol not only enjoy the substance, but express as many attitudes toward alcohol as humans. Some just drink to relax, some become addicted, and some won't touch the stuff.

Atheists Are Convinced

In some ways, this poll is predisposed to intrigue some people, and turn others off. A major tenet of some religions, particularly western religions, is that humans were created special. On the other hand, a major tenet of science is that humans evolved directly from apes. Where you stand on that paradigm is likely to affect how you respond to the question.

Men Have No Faith in Monkeys

Men were a bit more reluctant to agree that apes could ever outthink humans, while women were a bit more willing. It could be that men have a little more pride in human achievement, or it could be that women can better see the flaws in human achievement. It's not a huge difference, though, so whatever the reason, it's of marginal value.

You can make that argument for any person who follows any belief. Some people are asshats about it and try to agitate other people, while others just want to be left alone.

Because not having belief in one thing does not mean you can't believe in anything.

This is where you are wrong. This world is black and white. Let me give a fuller explanation. Since it is possible for someone who does not have belief in one thing to not believe in anything at all, you must be wrong because it is either all or nothing. Come on, use their logic if your going to talk to them

Ha, it doesn't matter if most can't. If one human can, and no monkey can, well there you go.

Atheists believe monkeys can outthink humans. Apparently monkeys CAN outthink atheists.

APES! Not Monkeys...completely different species. And yes, sometimes bonobo apes CAN out-think humans when it comes to understanding the truly important things in life and not fussing over finicky details.

The funny thing is that this isn't something you should believe in like you would the tooth fairy. It's pretty much a question of whether or not some people can comprehend or accept this fact which may or may not prove to be true. I know for sure that apes have better memory skills than humans and probably think and decide much quicker than we can but I don't know if they are truly smarter or that they can think for themselves. You think you believe in your god but yet you reject all trust and faith in his world. Denying the existence of a lot of it only because YOU think the real world disproves your god. If you really had faith you would accept the real world and the evidence for things like evolution. If evolution is real then maybe you misunderstand god. Maybe it doesn't conflict with the concept of god but it conflicts with your simple understanding of something that, if existed, is far out of your understanding. You just live in denial with your tragically lost faith. Good day to you ;)

Wrong again. No where did I say "You reject all trust & faith in his world'. Who is "his"?
Nor did I say I deny the existance of a lot of it, etc etc.

I should clarify since you totally misunderstand. The real world seen, or unseen to the naked eye, proves the existence of God, the Creator. The Bible even makes reference to the stars speak of the glory of God, & are displayed to show He's real. The Bible is true, it doesn't say there is no science, but it definately disproves the THEORY of evolution-that's all it is-a theory. I totally embrace the world, it's beauty is unsurpassed, & I marvel that God made something so beautiful for us, even when He didn't have to. He didn't have to make colors, He didn't have to create ours eyes to see colors.

You have no idea what you say. I've studied the Bible for longer than you've probably been alive-I went to Bible College, & after 4 yrs. recieved a Bachelor of Theology, studied there for 2 more yrs. Studied Evolution Refutation, taught by a nenouned Physicist, who is still working as a top Physicist.

I have an IQ of over 150.

The Bible says, however, that the way of salvation is so simple, that a fool can't err therein.
Yet the knowledge of God is so vast, that you can never come to the end of learning. I love that.
Perhaps, you need to try this instead of your garbelly-gook.

Since you're not dropping it, I'll answer your statement about "nonsense".

You call my beliefs "nonsense", Obviously I believe it's nonsense to say there is no God. All religions are not the same, some are true, some are not. The ones that are not true, do more harm than good.

You seem to want to pick a fight. Why is that? I'm sorry you don't believe in God, I do. Why don't you leave it at that?

You mean that I oppose the idea that I am stupid? But is that not only natural? I try to be objective about my intelligence, and it just appears to be at times and in certain online communities that at least some people would be mentally inferior.
