PUBLIC OPINION > America Should Not Adopt a Fat Tax

SodaHead News 2012/05/21 22:00:00
Following Denmark's recent adoption of a "fat tax" -- that is, a tax on fatty foods, not a tax on fat people -- researchers are suggesting that a similar tax in America could save thousands of lives and cut down on obesity. But would a fat tax fly in the land of liberty? We asked the public to find out.

sodahead fat tax america

Fat chance! There was some support for a fat tax, but not nearly enough to pass on a ballot. Nearly two-thirds of respondents were opposed. One commenter wrote, "This does nothing to solve the real problem in America: Healthy natural foods are overpriced." Many comments echoed that sentiment, suggesting that it would be more productive to develop cheap nutritious food than to make the fatty stuff more expensive.

International Encouragement

It's gonna be tough to pass legislation if American citizens are against it, but there's plenty of support overseas. Voters from outside the U.S. were twice as likely to support a fat tax. Although, keep in mind that the question asked about an American fat tax, so international voters aren't necessarily saying they want one in their own country. But they'd definitely like to see one in the States.

Heavy Opposition

Naturally, overweight respondents were among the least supportive. Presumably, that's because it would impact their budget the most. Skinny voters were actually more than twice as likely to support a fat tax as overweight voters. Average weight voters sided with the overweight, while athletes were closer to skinny voters, but not quite as enthusiastic.

Liberals Love the Idea

Finally, as expected, there was an enormous political margin. Liberals were more supportive than any other group with 73% saying they would encourage a fat tax. That's an unprecedented 50% more than conservatives. Oddly enough, progressives were against the tax, as were most moderates and "others." Libertarians were even more opposed than conservatives with just 18% support.

I wouldn't so much as pass the fat tax as I would allow people to right off going to the gym and exercise related activities on their taxes. As a fat tax seem harsh, although it would make allot of money to maybe balance the budget.

The best idea is that we get rid of every body in Washington and start anew with a CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT. Every body that don't like a CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT can leave and go to Europe or what ever country they want to go to.

No. We need to stop the rediculous taxation schemes. How about raising corporate tax, tariffs and REDUCE the size of government. Oh wait, that would require adhering to the constitution :-\

Our Nanny Government is already on our S*** list for infringing on too many of our personal habits. They cannot do their job so they need to keep the heck out of our business unless they want the fine citizens to join the Occupy folks and start kicking some idiot legislators butts.
I am fed up with local, state and Federal morons. They don't do squat for the working person other than try to drain our pocket book. Elections are coming up and I would like everyone to look at their ballots and see how many are education, health, fire district or crime related where they have their stinking hand out for more. The question is what did you do with the other bills that we paid on? Why haven't you balanced your budget? Perhaps because you have a bigger salary and retirement system. Vote NO on all of them

That's ridiculous. The main reason people buy fatty foods is because they generally (note I said generally) cost less than the ones that are not. So if you really wanted to combat obesity, you *could* lower the prices of the "good" stuff. But let's be honest here. It's not about obesity. The government needs money, and imposing a fat tax is their newest idea.

There are all kinds of fools, no exception to party, religion or education. It is stupid to generally try to force the public to do something by government power. I mean taxes and health cost never worked on smokers. Heck now people know that smokers make things worse for non-smokers and its not just secondhand. People are ticked because smokers are costing them no matter what.

Fatty foods are not the problem. Malnourishment, the additives to the food (MSG, HFCS, aspartame just to name a few), and GMO crops are the problems.
