Public Opinion Agrees 13 Is an Appropriate Age to Get a Facebook Page [INFOGRAPHIC]

SodaHead Infographics 2012/03/12 21:00:00
Social media, and Facebook in particular, has been booming for years, making it increasingly more difficult to avoid in our everyday lives. For parents, that can be a scary thought. The ease with which social media connects users has sparked conversation about new legislation, hoping to minimize the risk with safety mandates, and it's frightening to think that even our children might be exposed to those dangers. In light of this, we asked the public how old kids should be before they get a Facebook page, and combined our results with some important external information. Hopefully this infographic will paint a clear and concise picture for concerned parents, and offer insight into how other parents are dealing with the predicament. Let's dive.

The age requirement is something to think about however all kids are different enough that it should be up to the parent unless they are only there in name than the age should be at least 16.

actually facebook is fairly secure now with all the safety and security settings. If you don't teach ur child to be safe online, they won't learn it in real life. My daughter keeps her profile private and doesn't share personal information with ANYONE, but I have seen her friends much younger with public profiles their parents don't monitor and it is a recipe for disaster waiting to happen with pervs and bullies and stalkers. No matter what the age, people tend to be stupid when it comes to internet maturity. You can never be too safe, but you can protect yourself and your kids and help them learn to protect themself, and that is reesponsible parenting. We cannot lock them in a box and not let them out until they are 30, I know somewould like to, but its just nt possible in todays day and age. Adults need to learn how to be respectful and how to behave, keeping in mind there WILL (not might but WILL) be underage children around.

True, all true. Adults have to keep boundaries. That's good that your daughter doesn't share info with anyone. That's a smart move because the news is full of stories where some middle aged guy posing as someone their own age grooms a young person to meet up with them. And sometimes it doesn't end well at all. I don't have facebook, so I don't know firsthand, all I can go on is what I read in the news or others tell me. All these internet sites have the potential to be a hunting ground. And not just young people are targeted and victimized, older people get scammed as well sometimes. Personally I'd rather approach with caution then be overly trusting, it's difficult to confirm anything about anyone.

i think whenever they're ready, as long as they're safe about it i don't see why not. just protect your stuff and hide things that are inappropriate. i just don't see why not.

Aren't there some kind of programs that can lock the Facebook until the parent unlocks it? Is there a way that the parents can monitor everything that goes out and in on the minors Facebook? I think that 13 is to young but if I had those tools to limit and monitor minor use I would consider it. I would allow a 16 year old to have one without me meddling unless I found out that they were abusing it or putting themselves in danger. I feel that at 16 they should be given a chance to prove their responsibility.

I have had a Facebook account since I was 13.I only made that account just because all of my other friends had one,and look,I am still alive! My parents taught me from a young age that I shouldn't put my trust in akward internet strangers. You should stop underestimating your children. They might know more than you do.But if you have proof for your kid being a
butthead, then I suggest you control his internet life.

Our great grand daughter lost her computer due to facebook. She was in a conversation with a person she thought was 14 years old, and agreed to meet him at a local park. Her father found our about it and accompanied her to find that he guy she was to meet was actually about a 20 some man who ran when confronted.

Mark Zuckerberg wants to lower the age below 13 years old ....

I suggested lowering the age of MySpace from 18 to 16, then to 14 in order to protect minors. It sounds counter-intuitive, but lowering the age does protect minors.

The people who advocate 13 year children have a Facebook page, are the same people who buy their minor children alcohol and let them have unsupervised house parties! #EPICFAIL

Or as the schools are doing send them to the Planned Parenthood Teen pages for good health.

I'd get jailed and called a Sex pervert for speaking some of that to any 10 - 13 year old child.

I call bull. Some parents know how to advocate for their childrena nd be responsible parents at the same time as well as safe. Not much, granted, but it has been known to happen, I being one of them.

I promised my nephew that if he will be a nice boy, I'll make him one when he's 13, else when he's 15 (he's 10 now). So I think the right age is 13-15, younger kids shouldn't have access to such sites in my opinion. I even disagree with younger children having unlimited access to the internet.
