Prohibition helped fund the Mafia.

kir 2012/07/07 22:51:33
Prohibition caused alcohol production to go underground; when that happened the Mafia picked it up and made tons of money off of illegal production and sales. Who knew that meddling in one area of our lives could have such a drastic effect on another?

Prohibition of any kind, will always be a major money maker for criminal enterprise, and relatively useless in stopping the behavior that is wanted to be stopped.
  • merlinskiss 2012/07/09 17:34:05
Marijuana and other "illegal" drugs along with prostitution funds gangs, cartels, etc., all over the world. They keep our mostly private run prisons full and profitable from our tax dollars that pay for them. Our courts and law enforcement are kept occupied and employed. Hmmm... Seems like a self propagating circle feeding on itself...
  • baboula 2012/07/09 17:19:52
there were existing gangs for each nationality of the immigrants and as a rule they restricted their preying to those immigrants. Prohibition allowed the Cosa Nostra, commonly known as Mafia in this country, to rise above and quell all its competitors.

If you get right down to it, you will find the real people who created the funding of the Mafia was the Rabid Radical Religious Right trying to dictate moral imparitives upon the entire nation. This Caused the enactment of the 18th Amendment, which in turn, caused the bootleg industry which in turn, funded the various forms of Criminal organizations like the Mafia.

So REALLY it was RELIGION which caused the funding of Criminal organizations like the Mafia.

If it had not been for prohibition the Kennedy's would not have made their money.

"Helped" is wildly myopic imo. Prohibition MADE the Mafia.

[Edited for P.S. I hadn't seen bob's comment below when I replied. I agree with bob lol.]

  • baboula bob 2012/07/10 17:15:29
To what small kingdoms do you refer? In Italy they were mostly trading city-states and whille certain families had power - it wasn't that concentrated

Same would happen with foie gras if the market were large enough. ;0)

We live in the land of unintended consequences.

Whenever the government deprives the people of something they want, whether its alcohol, marijuana, abortions, gambling, prostitution - the need is filled by organized crime. Prohibition was the ultimate proof of that.

yep, and on the gulf coast we have all these empty gambling places

They just shut down "the roll your own cigarette business" in Seattle. Pathetic really, although they sold cigarette's, it was all naturally grown tobacco free of all additives. I am on day 5 of my quest to quite smoking. I used the roll your own to help in my quest...
I was having a discussion with my son about big corporations attacking smaller businesses when this "closer" was announced in the news. Government supports big money whether they are criminals or not...

FDA shouldn't be able to test anything. There's an innate conflict of interest for government testing and licensing. In this case it's tobacco and pharmaceutical companies.
  • Stoner T A 2012/07/08 06:12:32
shouldnt ..when has that ever stopped them?

    Why, never, of course.
  • RobHom 2012/07/07 23:16:45
Actually....one of the biggest benefactors of the period of prohibition was Joseph P. Kennedy the father of John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Ted.... He designed and had a boat built out of plywood with two very large English made Rolls Royce Engines...that could outrun anything the Federal Government had....he was "importing" Irish Whisky, and did so quite successfully.. The boats that he used were the forerunners of the PT (Patrol Torpedo) boats like PT109 captained by John Kennedy that were used to fight the Japanese in WWII.
