Profits At Largest 500 Corporations Grew By 81 Percent In 2010

While the Republicans continue their battle to force working Americans to pay for the trillion dollar gifts they have bestowed on their corporate masters and the richest Americans, the results of their "generosity" couldn't be clearer - the rich get MUCH MUCH richer, and the rest of America is ignored.

Profits At Largest 500 Corporations Grew By 81 Percent In 2010

By Zaid Jilani at 11:30 am

One of the dominating justifications that the right uses for its economic policies is that lowering taxes and regulations on society’s wealthiest members and big businesses will cause an explosion of wealth that will eventually “trickle down” to the vast majority of Americans. Yet while a record number of Americans are receiving some form of government assistance as unemployment remains high and the economy is in shambles, one group is doing very well: corporate America. The 2011 Fortune 500 list was unveiled today, surveying the growth and profits of the nation’s largest 500 corporations. It found that the profits of these companies “soared 81″ percent over the past year, causing the editors of Fortune to say that “we’ve rarely seen such a stark gulf between the fortunes of the 500 and those of ordinary Americans”:

All told, the Fortune 500 generated nearly $10.8 trillion in total revenues last year, up 10.5%. Total profits soared 81%. But guess who didn’t benefit much from this giant wave of cash? Millions of U.S. workers stuck mired in a stagnant job market. [...] Nevertheless, we’ve rarely seen such a stark gulf between the fortunes of the 500 and those of ordinary Americans.

At the same time, corporate tax revenue as a percentage of GDP is lower than it has been in years, meaning that not only is the wealth not trickling down, but that these big firms are also becoming less and less likely to pay their fair share.

we can't just blame republicans. Our "liberal/progressive" president has called for corporate tax cuts.

True, but if the President's proposals regarding closing the massive loopholes that allow megacorporations to escape ALL taxes can be enacted, the total revenue from corporate taxes will actually go up.

Sickening....we all knew this to be true but to see it in black and white makes it seem more sinister. What can we do about this beyond boycotting those companies? Any ideas?

The Republicans were not the ones that gave corporations "trillion dollar gifts"

Where have you been since OBummer was innaugrated?

It was Barry & Da Boiz that re-purchased all the Detroit UAW votes by keeping GM & Chrysler in business.

Corporate tax cuts should come with a loop hole that if you don't hire local or move your operations over seas you must pay back the money.

I hope they double this next year since profitability will mean more jobs in our future! I also hope that the economic forecast improves to the point where corporations have the confidence to begin hiring again! I know that the company I work for is hiring feverishly and I hope that is a good sign!

Their profits are up because they don't hire here. They hire elsewhere where labor costs less.

I'm glad your company is hiring.

If we keep America's economy vibrant by encouraging entreprenuerism, we will replace those lower paying jobs that we are losing to overseas with better high paying skill jobs here! We must keep our economy moving and that means a business and people friendly tax system, the Fair Tax!

its no secret that the largest fascist businesses national and abroad have done well with Obama at the helm. This admistration has been handing them trillions of dollars off the backs of Americans from its outset.

The largest fascist capitalist business also do well with massive regulations and taxes while small and working class business get bankrupted

It isn't just the Republicans that are in bed with big corporations it is all of them. It is time to end corporate welfare and I do think that lowering corporate tax rates making them competative with the rest of the world will keep and bring more big buisness here they just need to make sure there are no more loopholes just a flat tax rate that must be paid. It will never happen they are all scratching each others backs at our expense.
