Can someone who does shoot explain to me what the second "smoke" going off the gun barrel a bit behind the end of the barrel is? Also, don't skeet shooters follow the skeet upwards as it is launched, rather than shoot straight out in front as if at a target?

Sometimes they bore ports in the barrels of shotguns (usually not this way especially on an "over and under" style. Over and under means the two or double barrel is one on top of the other instead of side by side.) If the gun did indeed have ports the smoke would have looked like it was forced out with pressure not just hanging in the air. The way the smoke is in this pic is not consistent with actual ported barrel shotguns; it more represents the way smoke would look coming out of an old fashioned musket.

As for you second question. If he was actually skeet shooting we should see the launch house that propels the clay pigeons into the air. Skeet shooters seldom point straight ahead. One readies for the launch, relaxes and swings the barrel of the the gun up at an angle to spot the flying disc. Hitting the disc requires excellent eye hand coordination to anticipate the time when the shot will hit the moving target. The angle of the launch is varied to help with training.

In my opinion, and I am the daughter of a father and grandfather who excelled and won many trophies for this sport and trap shootin;. there is nothing that looks genuine about this picture. It looks like a "vogue" photog was called in to help the pres strike a pose and look like a guy in a sears catalog selling slacks.

I really don't think anyone actually believed that statement. Most people just rolled their eyes and moved on to planning their Super Bowl party. But the real question is...will he serve skeet wings at his party?
