President Obama continues to make life tough on those who make the greatest sacrifice. First, it was our cherished World War II vets, who are just wanting to see the memorial they built from their donation. They were denied. Then it was our Korean and Vietnam Vets. Again denied.

Now the president is choosing to ignore the needs of widows and orphans of our honored military dead. What can result from such choices. I, for one, am reluctant to find out.

President Obama opposed passage of funding for veterans’ death benefits because the Fisher House Foundation has agreed to cover the costs, according to his spokesman.

“The legislation is not necessary,” White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters Thursday when asked about legislation approved by the House and Senate that would pay for those benefits. “Our view has been, this piecemeal funding is, again, a gimmick.”
Carney faulted Congress on Wednesday for not covering the death benefits in the Pay Our Military Act, though the Congressional Research Service rendered a legal opinion that the legislation did fund the program.

“[Obama] was not pleased to learn of this problem,” Carney said during the Wednesday briefing. “And he has directed the OMB and his lawyers to find a solution. And he expects to have one today.”

But the president opposes the legislative fix. “We don’t need legislation,” Carney said Thursday. “The president directed that this be resolved and it has been. What is preposterous is this notion that we should, piecemeal, fix all the consequences caused by shutdown.”

The Defense Department, under the current agreement, will reimburse the Fisher House after the government shutdown ends.

The people that get bent out of shape the most by this feature of the shut down have spent their whole adult life avoiding military service. Many of us that are actually veterans of military service recognize this as the political ploy it is. The death benefits will be paid and the 'chicken hawks' will have to think of something else. Here is an idea. Let us have the up or down election on a 'clean shut down bill' and then return to the negotiating table.

    Holy spit.
    1. Obama didn't cause the shutdown, repubs did as a last ditch to stop a law passed 3 years ago.
    2. Obama does not decide the priority or the order that things are shut down, that was determined in most cases decades ago as part of a slew of acts, bills, and bylaws.
    3. Obama is not, ( no matter how much some of you need to believe it ) going out his way to hurt the public. The country is too big for the penny-ante garbage that is attributed to the president.
    SIGH.

your agrument was that the POTUS doesnt decide. I simply pointed out that he apointed the heads of the departments that did decide. These people answer to him do you really believe he had no input?

Yes I do believe he and others had no input. The rules of a government shutdown have been put in place long before Obama came along.

All the Republicans have to do is end their childish behavior and this becomes a non-issue, but they're too busy crying and stamping their feet like obstinate little children to do what needs to be done.

Seriously...! How can Obama get blamed for everything? I don't think he has been all that great as a President but Congress is just as it always is. A bunch of children, one who has the bat and one who has the ball. Makes no difference that Doubleday established the rules for baseball; each "Child" wants to make their own rules or won't share their critical piece of equipment. Thus no game and the little girl who sets up a lemonade stand next to the field gets no say and no revenue.
    Seriously....!

The Gimmick-in-Chief is a disgust. We have men and women all over the world in uniform as we speak. Imagine what THEY think. They put their lives on the line every single freaken day for all of us. To think that their widows will not get their contractual pay because some Foundation agreed to pick it up, but not the military does NOT surprise me from this man. Especially at a time when they are horribly grieving. SICK!!

Hagel is getting the benefits for them anyway.

Actually the shutdown is denying the death benefits. Selecting parts of the shutdown to start back up is Congress's way to try to save face. They took everything away and won't even vote on a clean bill.

Priorities. Every official who FAILED to ensure that soldier's families were provided for is guilty.

A lot of congress critters have expressed surprise that one or another government service has been affected. Each and every one of those surprised congress critters has failed in his duties. It was his JOB to understand what was going to happen during a shutdown. All those congress critters were OBLIGATED to take care of essential services.

    But - it is happening.

Congress and the Commander in Chief hold it's military commanders responsible for making sure that certain things happen, and other things don't happen. Neither congress nor the Commander in Chief accept lame excuses like, "Well, I tried!".

I'm confused? do you mean that since the law to ensure this wouldn't happen was passed someone failed to follow it? or because of the shut down someone succeeded and ignored the law to make sure this didn't happen?

The President and congress still have authority in this country. They are aware that benefits are being withheld. With little more than the snap of a finger, they can fix the problem. Either the president, OR congress can fix it. One or more heads should roll, and the benefits should be handled post haste - as in, delivered before the weekend is over.

Neither the president nor congress is acting - thus, they are both culpable.

I suspect that Obama may have approved of orders to withhold those benefits, but I don't know that. But, it seems to fit in with some of the other stupid crap that is being done.

Yes I agree there is some stupid crap going on. But the congress did pass a bill to ensure military compensation would be paid shut down or no. Its the heads of departments that have to decide how the shut down is implemented in their departments. And Obama appointed like minded individuals to these departments and they answer to him.

Each head of department who took it upon himself to make such a decision should have his office cleared out for him before Monday morning - and his replacement (temporary or otherwise) be made fully aware why he is the replacement.

The is a very sad day in the United States of America, a very sad day. And what really bothers me I will not see nor read any comments from the left on Soda Head to standup against the President.

The average Left winger doesn't want to believe that the majority of the citizens of this nation does not want what Obama is doing.

    Sad day in America

Apparently, not anywhere near as low as the Republicans are willing to go.
