President Obama Appoints Richard Cordray to Lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

President Obama speaks on appointing Richard Cordray as America's consumer watchdog.

Speaking to students and teachers at Shaker Heights High School near Cleveland, Ohio, the President said:

"Today I'm appointing Richard as America's consumer watchdog. And that means he is going to be in charge of one thing: looking out for the best interests of American consumers. Looking out for you.

So if you're a student—I see some young people out there—his job will be to protect you from dishonest lending practices and to make sure that you've got the information you need on student loans. He has already started up an initiative called "Know Before You Owe." ... If you're a veteran, he'll help make sure that you aren't taken advantage of when you're coming home from serving your country. And it turns out that military families are some of the folks who are most vulnerable to some of these financial abuses. If you're a senior, Richard is going to help make sure you don't lose your home or your retirement because somebody saw you as an easier target.

See, most people in the financial services industry do the right thing, but they're at a disadvantage if nobody is enforcing the rules. We can't let that happen. Now is not the time to play politics while people's livelihoods are at stake. Now is the time to do everything we can to protect consumers, prevent financial crises like the one that we've been through from ever happening again. That starts with letting Richard do his job."

Glad to see the President take the reins on this one and make the appointment with Congress in recess. We need more of these bold moves and this one in particular will be a great boon for consumers.

for those opposing this appointment I have a question.

DId you also speak out against Bush stacking the courts and the UN with recess appointments? DId you call him a dictator? A Socialist?
Fair is fair is it not? This is only a consumer protection agency not a judicial branch of government.

The senate was in proforma session and passed his extension which he signed. Using the logic involved then the appointments are illegal or the law was illegal. You can't have it both ways. This is pure I am going to do what I want. God Bless America.

Good job Mr President. If the congress want to avoid recess appointments, then stay in Washington and do your jobs. Don't fake a procedural ploy to usurp the presidents constutionally authorized authority.

Sorry but I can't do that!

This President has made it clear that he believes he can make law. He CAN NOT! Such would be unconstitutional. And with him reportedly being a Constitutional scholar it is twice as bad for him to say he will make law if Congress does not (do what he wants).

The Senate says they weren't in recess, but what it really comes down to is a single person coming in every three days or so, hitting the gavel, and leaving. Sounds like a pretty weak definition of recess too me and has not yet been tested by the courts.

Another move to prove that Obama is not interested in unifying Congress, only to do what he wants to do.

Another politician appointed to represent the consumer. Ralph Nader would have been a better choice, but he refuses to kneel before the unzipped pants of the corporations.

I probably agree with the overall sentiment, but Nader in particular is getting rather old and doesn't work well in building teams and coalitions.

In terms of acting as a financial police officer, enforcing regulations, I'm not sure anyone who hasn't been an Attorney General right now would be a better choice -- except for Eliz. Warren, who is going on to bigger and better things.
