Pres. Obama Endorses Building Mosque Near Ground Zero

Sherry Mowery, My Cowboy suffers no longer... 2010/08/14 03:12:36

WASHINGTON --
President Barack Obama on Friday forcefully endorsed building a mosque near ground zero, saying the country's founding principles demanded no less.
"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country," Obama said, weighing in for the first time on a controversy that has riven New York City and the nation.
"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said. "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."
Obama made the comments at an annual dinner in the White House State Dining Room celebrating the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

I've thought from the beginning that BO was in the background pulling the strings. All he had to do was tell Bloomberg that it was in the national interest to back the building of this mosque. BO has just lost all hope of gaining any votes in the State of New York. Plus he's proven himself an idiot by trying to appease the Middle Eastern countries. They are our allies as long as we're paying them. Once we stop paying them or they get a better offer they're no longer our allies, it's simple as that. What's really tragic is the radical’s fanatics are going to attack us again and it won't a shoe or waist bomber. These are just distractions until they are ready to strike and then it’s going to be big. We could be ready for it but the idiot BO is forcing us to let our guard down. All because he wants to known as the man who brought peace to Middle East. Like I said he’s an idiot!strike ready idiot bo forcing guard peace middle east idiot

This issue highlights how mainstream anti-Muslim bigotry has become. 9/11 was an unspeakable crime committed by the most violent fundamentalists. I believe we should honor the dead by fighting anti-plurality and scapegoating with plurality and careful reasoning.

As soon as we confuse Islam itself with the actions of Al Qaeda, we have crossed a line into dangerous prejudice. We should all condemn terrorism and violent fundamentalism, in all its forms, whether Islamic, Christian, Nationalist, etc. But furthermore, people of conscience should step back and find a good way to relate to Islam as a whole in this particular moment in history.

As a non-Muslim, I seek to learn more about the multifaceted nature of this faith, and build friendships with all progressive and liberal movements within Islam which emphasize Islamic tradition's most egalitarian strands, and support them in making alternatives to Fundamentalist and Theocratic movements.

In freedom of religion, I would love us to honor the dead by taking the higher road of tolerance and critical thinking, to welcome the Islamic center in Camberley , and look foreward to the building of progressive churches and synagogues near by.

9/11 we will never forget, and will stand by our lights of plurality.

If it goes against the way Americans think, O is for it!!!
When I heard that O supported the Mosque at ground zero today, something occurred to me: every issue that has come up since O has been in office, it seems that he waits until their is a public opinion and them he takes the opposite view. On every one of these programs/policies the American public has come out against them, and he weighs in for them: Stimulus Package, Cash for Clunkers, Mandated Health Care, Immigration reform law in Arizona, Immediate response to the Gulf Oil Leak, Mosque at Ground Zero. This litany is just a few of the issues that he has diametrically opposed the will of the majority of Americans.
You can almost take it to the bank that if the American People are for something, O is against it; and of course vice versa.

In a country built on the promise of equality for all its citizens it is appalling to see so many people keen on censoring and persecuting a group of people who just want to get together and worship their God.

Are you kidding me? Why did they pick the area that they want to build? Why not further away then ground Zero?

Because they own that land. Why should they have to go through the trouble of buying more just to appease people who are charging them with crimes that they did not commit nor condone as a whole.

The simple fact that they want to build there and not honor the American dead from the 911 tragedy tells me this is nothing but a slap in the face to America. Having Ostupid endorse this outrage doesn't surprise me. I've been saying he's a muslim here all along. Let them build the mosque, wait till if fills to capacity then show them how it feels to get wiped out at ground zero. Anyone who supports this insanity of building at ground zero is A TRAITOR!!!

First of all, I seriously doubt that the building of the mosque was meant to intentionally hurt the families or dead from 911. As a New Yorker i know how important it is to keep honoring those people and to keep the memory of what they lost that day alive. But as American I realize that this country is supposed to be about equality and if people begin to persecute Muslim AMERICANS then we lose who we are as a country in the process. If Obama is a Muslim, not that its any of our business in the first place, how do you think it would affect the decisions that he makes for this country if he a loyal American?

Is the only way that you can get your point across to insult me because I am here to hold intelligent, mature conversations. I may have made a mistake in the wording of my last comment what I trying to say was that if they were being given the chance to build in a location that fit their building plans they should not pass it up to please people who clearly don't respect them as member of this country sheerly on the religion that they have chosen. Also since you brought it up ConEdison also can do what it wants with it property holdings.

I have no problem with any religion or where they chose to build their churches!

You are very right, they can build were ever they want to build... it just seems a bit disrespectful to me! It would be like the Japinese building near Pearl Harbor!

As someone who has someone they love over in Iraq and knew people in the towers who, thank God, made it out alive I do realize how sensitive this issue really is and i have nothing but respect for the people who lost their lives. However, I also realize that persecuting a group of Muslim Americans biassed solely on what other people of their religion have done is not the way to go about honoring the dead or further healing the wound left by that tragic day.

Where are all the separation of Church and state folks? Shouldn't they be up in arms about a Ramadam celebration being held on public property?

No one is saying that the people of Islamic faith don't have a constitutional right to build a Mosque in the United States. We are however (edit spelling) rightly questioning...

    Who is funding it?
Why does it have to be built there?
    Will the teaching be wahhabism?
Why was the proposed opening 9-11-11?

No, because he is not forcing any of the american people to take part in the holiday nor is he acting as our representative as part either. He is just attending a dinner held in celebration of a type tradition that has been around since before his time. In a way isn't he respecting a legacy left behind by former presidents by continuing the tradition even after the problems we have faced with people of muslim decent.
  • donedunn mahogan... 2010/08/14 07:43:16

Huh. Thats wierd because a completely voluntary holiday concert with Christmas themed music performed at a public hall could very likely come under fire for separation of church and state. Even though the people attending chose to be there.

I think its the same situation people tend to make big deals out situations according to their agenda at the time. Right now what President Obama does with his time and Muslims are under attack by a lot of people thus this dinner has become a big deal. By the way speaking of public places the mosque is planing to be built on private property.
