President Obama today (May 9, 2012) announced that he now supports same-sex marriage.

In an interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts, the president described his thought process as an "evolution" that led him to this place, based on conversations with his own staff members, openly gay and lesbian service members, and conversations with his wife and own daughters.

We overcame marriage denied by different races, we should do the same for different sexual preference if we believe in equal protection under the law.

How we treat others reflects upon our own beings.

By being accepting of others we can better accept our own selves.

While Christians may disagree I see this as a positive spiritual direction when we allow all the people to be included within the larger group.

Homosexuality is preverted, unhygienic, and sinful. I cannot imagine how a man could let another man treat him as a woman. My personal opinion. However, I don't propose to tell other people how to live their lives. I have no such right. Neither do I have the right to tell anyone who they can or who they cannot marry.

If a marriage is a legal agreement between two people that have reached the age of majority or have the blessings of a parent that is not a minor then it should from a legal standpoint be an agreement that a man/woman, man/man or woman/woman should be able to arrange in the courts.

We have been impacted by the Christian viewpoint on this and this is another reason to keep the separation of church and state clearly severed.

I think adding in some ghost Muslims in your post.....

Occlusions are a poor way to reach conclusions.

The "basic civil right to civil marriage" has been defined as a "basic civil right" by SCOTUS since 1967.

The Presidents statement is well thought out and well reasoned.

More Power to him in his fight for equal rights for all citizens and in his fight for reelection.

    I'll be voting for him

Just like women's suffrage and the civil rights campaigns of the 60's, marriage equality will become a reality. The same aguments being regurgitated and hurled against this issue now were used in the past to justify inequality then.

Reinforces my opinion of him. That he is basically on the right side on most issues, it just takes time to work through the politics. Just love Mitt coming out for big government making the decision of who can have a recognized relationship. So much for individual and state rights,

I believe the reasons were more the political landscape and how far and how fast a positive move can be made.

Actually, I believe that the Rights war on women and gays has advanced the cause.
Mitt recently had a gay person on his team but that person resigned under Christian pressure.
The war on women has made rights more of a solidified movement. While a different group the underlying pressures are making people consider more what is right and what is wrong.

I wish there was a undecided answer on this one. I had a Soldier that was gay and I didn't care but I made it clear that he was to act professional while in uniform. There are still some things that I am uncomfortable with and I don't know if I will ever get over it. I do support the gay marriage though, but not everything gays try to do. I have battled over this for a long time because my niece is gay and I love her but I don't want her trying to influence my daughter every time she and her partner visits because that is my wife's and I responsibility.

Obama didn't flip flop. Obama "evolved." If you don't believe me ask, Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddux, Don Lemon, David Axelrod, David Plouffe, Robert Gibbs, and the man on the streets of San Francisco.

Probably more correctly the people have evolved and Obama was able to use this to move ahead without damaging his potential on other fronts.

The people are really the leaders and the leaders then become the symbol of the movement.

Aw, c'mon, awready. Barack Obama always supported Gay marriage and the Gay agenda. Why do you think the Gay community is so enamored with him? They knew his position all along. They just wanted him to come out and say so publicly.

But Barack Obama, being the consummate Chicago politician that he is, was waiting for a more opportune time to achieve maximum political effect and rewards. This was not about "evolving."

I agree there was an element of timing for optimal advantage.

Part of that is how the stats are moving towards more gay acceptance. The more of us that are pro- gay rights the easier of a political position it is.

So it was all bout winning votes and support from the Gay community? There was also elements of hypocrisy, political manipulation and disingenuousness in the way Obama handled the announcement. Barack Obama is all about what's good for Barack Obama - what best serves Barack Obama. Barack Obama is the only core belief that Barack Obama has.

It's time. It's time to stop concerning ourselves with what goes on in people's bedrooms and who they choose to marry -- and start concerning ourselves with the more critical matters that our country, and the world, is facing.

There is no right or wrong, but I think it will have a positive impact on gay marriage. I support it and I hope it becomes a right for lesbian or gay couples to be able to marry.
