Of course, it's been almost 600 years since a Pope resigned and it is very rare in our world for someone to give up power willingly.
But in hindsight, his health has been deteriorating and I can understand why he would not want the last years of his life clinging to a position he can no longer serve in the best interest of the Catholic Church.

The islam faith does not have a 'pope' like position, so the highest level of leadership you can look to is only to that mosque. Or in certain countries, a few spots higher then that but there is none for the religion as a whole.
