The whole concept of income taxes is unconstitutional and against basic American law. It was a law that was forced down our throats even though we didn't want it, similar to Obamacare. At the time it was argued that only a few of the most wealthy would even have to pay the tax. But, putting that issue aside, the standard argument is that everyone should pay their fair share. But what IS your "fair share"? There is no such thing as your "fair share". If you take your taxes to 50 different tax preparers you will get 50 different tax liabilities. Which one of these "fair shares" should you pay? The greatest, or the least? It's very ambiguous to say the least.

Would most Americans think this way if they received their full paycheck every pay period and then had to write a check to the government to cover their taxes? Withholding is designed to circumvent the problem by training us to believe that money was never ours in the first place.

Actually, if you want to, you can. Just make out a check to the U.S. Treasury Department for any amount you like. This is a perfectly legal thing to do.

You pay when you make it, then again when you spend it.
Add up every tax you pay for a month.
Everyone should partake, and that's not how it's working.

I agree with that. If they had a national sales tax, everyone, including the illegal aliens, would pay. The government needs to realize they can only tax the rich so much before they run out of money or move out of the country.

You think Gates $55,500,000,000 is going to get hurt? This whole US deficit agreement only saves $38,000,000,000. For the whole country. Gates makes more than that just suing people.

Most Americans don't realize how much they pay in taxes... and the bottom 50% of income earners pay only 2.7% of all federal income taxes.

Americans forget they pay property taxes, sales taxes, state and federal income taxes... They also pay taxes in the form of auto registration, gasoline, cigarette, plastic bottle and aluminum cans recycling fees, etc...

I think most Americans pay too much in taxes.
  • Bob DiN Fef 2011/04/16 03:20:36

Most don't get to keep 50% of what they earn when you figure total taxes. The one exception is the freeloading leeches of society that pay nothing and live on the public.

Yeah, I am paying too much overall from all the fees, FICA, State, Sales, Property, and Federal, but that's not my problem with them. What pisses me off is that 50% don't pay anything to the Federal Income Tax and then they get my tax dollars back in wealth redistribution schemes such as "Make Work Pay" and "EITC" which should be called "Robbing your Neighbor through Government Intervention". Flat tax. 2 levels. Gross Income under 100,000 = 12.5% and above = 17%. Simple. All businesses shall be taxed at 10% of their gross income. No deductions for anything. Period. Social Security payout cannot be taxed as income.
    No more vote buying schemes

Well we live in the greatest country in the world and like they say freedom isn't free. I think we get quite a lot done with our taxes and it's not so much about the taxes we pay, but rather the wages we earn. Spending is a problem, no doubt, but wages haven't been keeping up with the cost of living, plus too many people have been laid off to have a healthy tax base. A strong arguement can be made about too much money flowing at the top and not enough in the middle.
In short, we need our good paying jobs back or we need to start creating some soon.

There should be an "undecided" vote. Since 47% of Americans pay no taxes, and 75% get some direct or indirect money (special tax breaks) from the government, I guess that it is not surprising that most think that they "pay" the right amount.
But I wish that the government would have a balanced budget and only give stuff away that they can afford to pay for. Government spending should not be on a credit card.

I pay almost 50% of every dollar to the Federal, State or Local government in income, sales and excise taxes. That is a bit much, don't you think.....that doesn't include my Gore phone tax, my car tags, my property taxes and the ever popular gasoline tax...

I only said yes, so that I could comment. I have paid as much as $38,000 per year in taxes and the next year got back 28K. If you have to pay taxes, it means you are making enough to pay them. I would rather have to pay than not. Obama has so destroyed the energy industry in the U.S. my income has gone down drastically.
