Poll: 26% Of U.S. Clueless On Who We Declared Independence From

OK, this one's not about Democrats or Republicans or Independents. Is it truly possible that there are THAT many clueless people in this country?????

From the article:

Poll: 26% Of U.S. Clueless On Who We Declared Independence From

Pop quiz: Who was emperor when the United States declared independence from China?

Give up?

Perhaps you should ask one of the Americans who, when asked what country the U.S. separated from, named France, Japan, Mexico, Spain or, yes, China.

A new Marist poll shows that 26% of people in this country don't know that the U.S. declared its independence from Great Britain. That includes 20% who aren't sure -- and another 6% who think it was another country.

Looking at the numbers more deeply, it appears the closer to 1776 you were born, the more likely you are to know the correct answer. So enjoy the July 4th holiday, everyone, and don't forget to be thankful that we're out from under the yoke of our Mexican colonial oppressors.

I was just reading a book that made the point that the bigger danger isn't revision of history, but ignorance of history. If people are ignorant of history, there is no reason to revise it.

That's true. We (collectively) do seem to have short attention spans. Too bad Betsy Ross didn't have a wardrobe malfunction. THAT they'd remember!

Have a wonderful Fourth of July, my friend.

Home-made icecream and BBQ? I am jealous! Sounds like fun. How's the weather? The past three days and today too, have been spectacular here, no humidity, and about 82 degrees.

LOL that one I'd have to respectfully disagree with. I DO agree that there are a shocking number of people around here who seem to have no idea about anything that happened in this country in the past 250 years, but it goes far beyond silly websites like these. I think it comes down to people not particularly CARING about their own history. They'd rather talk about which teenage vampire is better

Have a great 4th, my dear friend.

You know how I love to get my digs in, Starr, and so many here are not so bright, I mean birthers, really???? They are surely the same people who support Palin, listen to Beck, and support revisionist history, and creationism as a science.

LOL I know you do, MOM :) But even those who seek to revise history need to know what it is they're attempting to revise. Palin truly is clueless, I grant you, and probably wonders why there's no mention of Alaska in the Declaration of Independence. Beck, on the other hand, while psychotic, is much more dangerous in that he DOES seem to know bits and pieces of the truth and deliberately seeks to distort and abuse it for his own ends. For him to steal Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" for what could only be called the exact opposite of either "common" or "sense" is disgraceful, as is his attempt to usurp the message of peace that Martin Luther King lived and died for in order to steal from Veterans and spread racist divisiveness.

If you live in the western part of the US, it was Mexico that ruled until the mid 1830s or 1840, depending on where you were. So that does make some kind of sense. Parts of the US were also controlled by France until the Louisiana purchase. But still, you would think they'd remember there was a big war. Where people got Japan and China from, I'll never know.

Maybe they were fooled by the fact that, while EVERY town has a Chinese restaurant, it's rare to see any British restaurants anywhere LOL

Well, one adult American in five thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth... so I'm not really that surprised about this finding. It's still pretty sad though...
