Sanford, Fla., has fired Bill Lee, the police chief who initially oversaw the controversial investigation into a neighborhood watch captain's fatal shooting of a 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin. The initial lack of an arrest drove widespread protests and propelled the case into national headlines.

"After much thoughtful discussion and deep consideration for the issues facing the city of Sanford, I have determined the police chief needs to have the trust and respect of the elected officials and the confidence of the entire community," Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte was quoted saying in the city's statement. "We need to move forward with a police chief that all the citizens of Sanford can support. I have come to this decision in light of the escalating divisiveness that has taken hold of the city." No surprise. His department did a disastrously poor job of investigating that case. It showed a complete lack of training and discipline.

The DA will probably be next.

He previously offered his resignation and the City Manager refused it. Now they fire him? Seems it is a political move based on the media circus.

Did you read the article? The BOARD voted not to fire him when he offered his resignation. If the situation in Sanford is still emotional and Lee doesn't have the confidence of the residents or the officers, firing him might have become necessary.

I agree with you that it COULD be political -- I don't know enough to decide for myself one way or the other.

The media has made such a circus out of this incident that the chief had to be sacrificed. It stinks to high heaven of being political and the media has done nothing but sensationalize the matter for their own gain. They have tried the case in the media and by doing so have put any politician associated with it in the crosshairs. I am beginning to believe that they will have a hard time seating a jury which could lead to a dismissal of the charges.

You may be right, I'm not drawing conclusions based on what I've read so far. Most of the political saga didn't involve the SPD after the original incident, and I have no idea what life is like in Sanford these days.

They got a jury for OJ, I'm sure they can here too.

The only difference I see between the OJ case and this one is that the media didn't play it out in regards to swaying the case. They did the coverage such as the slow speed chase of his Bronco and his subsequent arrest. But the race issue did not come into play until the trial started.

In the Martin case it was racially charged by the media from the onset. Now taking into consideration that Zimmermans attorney has been receiving death threats who in their right mind would want to be seated on the jury? A juror would have to be thinking about reprisals if Zimmerman were found innocent. The media has given Zimmermans attorney a very possible out and this case could possibly never see trial.

“I have come to this decision in light of the escalating divisiveness that has taken hold of the city,” the manager said in the statement. The decision was made after a meeting earlier in the day.

Pressure for his resignation also had come from within the Sanford government. The Sanford City Commission issued a 3-2 vote of no confidence against Lee in March, and Bonaparte said at the time that Lee needed to be let go in order to let the city “move forward.”

There was definately pressure from the media circus, this was politically motivated by the city managers own admission.

If Sanford is not dealing well with the circus, then I don't see that the Commission and/or Manager had a good choice. They could stand behind Lee and let the citizens suffer or they could throw Lee under the bus.

If it were my decision, I'd probably make the same one for the good of the community. That doesn't mean I'd like it, but 4 months after an event with tensions worse rather than better is not good for the town.

That's the part I don't know about. Are tensions really worse or is that an excuse? If it's an excuse, then the decision is total politics and sucks.

How can I possibly know enough to make that decision. It is a horrible tragedy for first, the young man who lost his life, his family and all others involved.I don't know what was in Zimmermans head but a community that patrols with guns looking for trouble will find it and they did.The chief being fired makes the city look like they are doing something, but are they?Where will they find the person all citizens can support? They are delusional.

It's not necessarily a fair decision, but it's the only decision that works for the community. In hindsight, he made a lot of horrible mistakes for a case that had this much national attention - but there was no way to know at the time he made the decisions that this would get that much attention.

Some might think this means he should have treated every case as though it could get this big - but the reality is that there isn't enough time or resources to do that. In the end, he made some bonehead mistakes that are understandable... but have become unacceptable.

I just wish it was this easy to fire less public government employees when they make mistakes!! Hello, DMV... I'm looking at all-yall.

They didn't even impound the gun, usually the first step in a murder investigation, to check it against the bullet recovered from Trayvon's body.
