We can't make another mistake like the Iraq War.

mistake iraq warAs we approach the ninth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, we once again see dangerous momentum for another irresponsible, unnecessary and costly war -- this time with Iran.

Fear-mongering and propaganda aside, Iran is not an imminent threat to the United States -- and we haven't yet exhausted all avenues for diplomacy to ensure Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon.

But as a result of the Iranian Revolution over 30 years ago, current law makes it very difficult for American diplomats to talk directly to representatives of the Iranian government.

That is why Congresswoman Barbara Lee has introduced legislation that, in her words, "directs the President to appoint a Special Envoy for Iran to ensure that all diplomatic avenues are pursued to avoid a war with Iran and to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon."1

Sign the petition. Tell your member of Congress to co-sponsor Rep. Lee's bill to avoid an unnecessary and costly war with Iran.

Whether or not you think your representative will co-sponsor the bill, we need you to speak out.

Unfortunately, while the American people are opposed to another war of choice,2 those pushing for war have been far more vocal and organized than the rest of us.

Our friends on the Hill have told us that congressional offices are hearing from people who want us to go to war, but not from those who would like to see a diplomatic solution.

Not only will your petition signature signal support for Rep. Lee's bill, it will also ensure that those howling for war are not met with a deafening silence on our side.

I hope it does not happen, yet we are not the decision makers. Iran has been a big problem for a long time. I don't know if you are old enough to remember what happened in the 1970s, but I am. Iran at that time was a country of basically free people, before the Islamic Revolution. I have a family member who would be on the front lines, yet I am not against it if there is no diplomatic solution.

Yes, I was alive when the Shah was in power and no the people were not free; they were on a leash, subject to the rules of the regime. In this reality, there are only choices and consequences; they made their's in their revolution driven by oppression, trading one tyranny for another.

They were a lot more free than they have been since. They could express themselves, wear whatever clothes they wanted, go to school if they were a woman, etc, etc. We should have intervened then, but we had Jimmy Carter in office so of course we ended up having hostages taken and giving them money. Here we are all these years later and nothing was ever resolved.

The exchange students could live in freedom in the US but they were closely watched. I went to college with many of them long ago. A rescue attempt was made for the hostages; but, it failed. Jimmy Carter is not to blame completely; it was a lot more complicated than what was allowed in the US press.

I remember the rescue attempt, I still stick with what I said, if there was any time we should have gone in, that was it.

They would have killed everyone. You do not underestimate how far a zealot will go because of their beliefs. We have our version here in the States.

I don't want to see any more war (I have mentioned I have a family member at risk), but I just don't think I am in the position to know what the best answers are for this current situation. It has been brewing for a long time. I have to tell you I am completely against the oppression of women, and when I think of Iran, that is the first thing that comes to my mind.

The problem is "compartmentalization"; or, you are only told enough of the story to do your job. The kids on the front lines, in harms way, are the least informed. We need to take care of ourselves and stop meddling in other peoples business; unfortunately, blowback from what we have done may override reason. We cannot afford to make any more mistakes and time is running out.

I don't think it is in our hands. Iran can stop it if they really want to.

I believe that we (the USA) should pull all of troops out of every Islamic country, and stop all foreign aid - including to Israel. It makes no sense for our corrupt government to borrow money to give away to countries, some of wnom dislike us.

Correct! It has reached a point where the Homeland is our top issue of National Security. Bring the troops home to defend We the People instead of propping up a puppet dictator. The US's greatest export is weapons I am told. It must end ... by choice or by necessity.

What "avenues for diplomacy" haven't been attempted?

Iranian Revolution , a very good example of getting rid of buttface
    the shaw of Iran
then having to deal with a worse buttface
    Iranian leader
man, he looks familar don't he?

    Iranian hostages
