PlayStation Shut Down for a Week: Heaven Forbid or Thank Heavens?

PlayStation users are going through some serious withdrawal right about now.

While they can play games offline, the PlayStation Network is done indefinitely (not forever gamers, take it easy), most probably less than a week, according to NPR.

Why?

It seems some hackers found a serious security hole.

Sony, the game maker, blogged that hackers might have obtained "name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained."

PlayStation hosts about 70 million accounts, and the company warns users to be on the look out for unexplained charges on credit cards. They also say users should change their passwords elsewhere if they use the same one.

Thank heavens insofar as they're doing it for the sake of their customer's data security. Like leaving it up would be better? It sucks not to be able to play multiplayer Red Dead Redemption, but whatever; while it's down, I've found time to eat, do some grocery shopping, get a haircut, and make some important discoveries that might win me a nobel prize in physics.

I say heaven forbid because hackers now know where I live. But I do thank heavens for the time away from the dumb 12 year old boys who don't leave me alone when I play COD.

I for one think it is funny to see people repeatably touch [and get burned] a red-hot glowing burner. There is nothing funnier than stupidity.

You act like this is the FIRST time SOE/SONY has had this problem LOL

I make it a common practice to visit the BBB's website often. I would suggest the same to everyone here as well. For people that didn't know, sure ok, but there are many idiots that already went through this one time with Sony, and sadly people that went through it this time will most likely still hang around and go through it again in another 1-2 years. Those people are the ones I laugh at.

I have been using xbox live for years and it has never gone down. Never had my info stolen, nor has anyone else I know. The fact is, the xbox is the greater system, cost less, more reliable, and better game sells.

Xbox only has better game sells for FPS games. Almost everything else (especially fighting games) is equal or lower than the ps3.

That may bee true. But the moneymakers are fps. Sure people play other genres, but none come close to the fps.

That's some bad logic, considering the past hardware problems that have turned many 360's into very expensive paperweights, and the fact that Microsoft just straight-up demands money just to use XBOX Live, whereas PS3 users might or might not have had their credit card information stolen. Even if they had CC info, PSN users still only might or might not have had fraudulent activity on their credit card as a result. So far there have been no reports that charges have appeared on any PSN user's credit card statements simply for having a registered account. That's a point for the PSN. Sure, the PSN costs users a bit of a scare, but we still have our money, and some of the titles in our Blu-ray collections prove that we will pay to be scared anyway. How about you? Oh, wait; that's right! XBOX doesn't have Blu-ray. That's another point for Sony.

The fact is this is the second shutdown of the psn system. The 360s problems were fixed long ago. And your right, as usual sony hogs new tech such as bluray. Guess what, I can pick up a player for 88 bucks, and it won't damage my gaming systems. prolonged use of gaming systems as dvd and bluray players can wear down the disk drive.

Sony didn't hog the new tech. Microsoft just put their money on the losing horse (HDDVD). XBOX could have shipped with Blu ray as well, but didn't. The prolonged use of any disk drive can wear down the disk drive, it doesn't matter if it's multi-purpose or dedicated. And the fact that this was a the second shutdown of the PSN was not a point you could have made a week ago, when both networks were tied for number of shutdowns, yet PSN was still free and had no RROD. So it's still bad logic, considering your original point was "They have done this before. Which is why I only use the XBOX 360!" as though it has a long-established history of problems.

If sony would leave the hackers alone, they would leave them alone, hopefully Sony want learn, and they become seriously hurt, they are as evil as Microsoft and Apple combined.

Why should Sony leave hackers alone? Hackers are a nuisance at best. It was the hackers like Geohot who launched a campaign that was intended to defraud Sony, and now him and his ilk are being little bitches about it because (surprise surprise!) Sony sued his ass. Hackers do not have any right to do what they do. It's Sony's product and they have invested a lot of money on R&D just to make it available. They have a right to protect their investment, and a responsibility to their customers to ensure it is secure. Is Sony just supposed to surrender the trust of loyal customers in their multi-million dollar investment just so some punks can get free games, or whatever it is they want? Yeah, that's a great idea. How many developers do you think would still be interested in making games that can easily be pirated for a company that is hacker-friendly? I can think of only a small handful of games that are always free and legal, and you know what? They suck. But if that's what you want, have fun. You can be X's. I'll go out and buy something more fun.

PS3 isn't having offline issue.. PSN (online) issue. Hackers did the same to Xbox Live. In that situation they even hacked Larry Hyrb ( Director of Programming for Microsoft's Xbox LIVE) account
