A federal trial over the nation's worst offshore oil disaster has been delayed for a week to allow more time for settlement talks, according to two people close to the case.
The two people told The Associated Press the decision was made Sunday during a conference call between parties in the case and U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier. They spoke on condition of anonymity because a formal ruling had not yet been issued.
Among other things, the trial that had been set to begin Monday is meant to determine the penalties that need to be paid by BP and other companies involved in the oil spill. Billions of dollars are at stake.

+1The whole process is rigged. Watch BP escape with minimal penalties and damages. They had a prior blow out that happened the same way, which they covered up. They knew this would happen again if they continued to cut corners, but they did it anyway. BP is the most corrupt company on the face of the Earth. It is laid out fully in Greg Palast's book, "Vultures' Picnic."reply - Striker 2012/02/26 22:47:38
+1Guess that means that the $20 billion BP already paid to the extortioners Obama did not constitute a "settlement"?reply - Beccy 2012/02/26 22:44:05
+1Well it looks like the governmentwill give BP another breakreply
