Pentagon May Oust Troops Involuntarily to Meet Reductions in [0bama] Budget Plan

BlueMax372 2012/02/14 18:04:43

The Defense Department may have to force soldiers, Marines or other members of the military out of the services for the first time since the aftermath of the Cold War to achieve the spending reductions in its budget proposal.

The Pentagon plans to cut 67,100 soldiers from active and reserve Army units and the Army National Guard in the five years starting Oct. 1, as well as 15,200 from the active and reserve ranks of the Marine Corps as part of an effort to save $487 billion over a decade, according to the budget sent to Congress today. The Navy and Air Force would lose fewer people -- 8,600 and 1,700 respectively -- because of their role in a strategic shift toward the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East.

The military will first try buying out contracts or offering bonuses for people to leave, while working to keep those with valuable specialties such as cyber warfare and acquisitions, according to Travis Sharp, a fellow at the Center for a New American Security, a Washington policy group, who attended a Pentagon briefing for analysts last month.

“I was surprised that they were going to complete the reductions to the Army and the Marine Corps in just five years,” Sharp said in an interview before the budget was released. “What they told us is that they will try to use those types of positive incentives to the greatest extent possible, but that involuntary separations would probably still be necessary.”

You guys wanted hope and change.

You just never asked Obama for the specifics.

This is it. The military is being dismantled before our very eyes while ACORN and Media Matters gets hundreds of billions of dollars. Same with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Actually there is a RIF going on but not advertised. They have made it much more difficlult for guys to re-enlist in some rates. And there is also a move afoot to allow guys to retire earlier with a reduced retirement check or a Lump Sum payment.

Our military is being decimated at a time when China, Iran and other countries are expanding their influence into territory we pretty well kept under control.

Better yet, they're targeting soldiers who would never obey an order to shoot American citizens. The military too, is being prepared for the coming takeover. Laugh all you want about it, it's only paranoia if they're NOT really out to get you.

We've done this after every major conflict in our nation's history. When are we going to wake up? Anyone that thinks that the professionalism and skills of today's Military can be replaced at some future date with a host of draftees and minimally trained Guard and Reserve forces whose training was sacrificed due to budget cuts is a damned fool!!

I lived through the 'hollow force' of the 70s. Panetta's lib-speak about it being 'different' this time is pure BS. The current administration is the most anti-American that's ever served and the majority of it's serving members deserve to be impeached and removed from office.

They should reduce by natural attrition, and not by forcing anyone out. If this can't be done, then the cuts in personnel are too large, and/or too fast.

If this means we will bring our troops home from unnecessary wars and remove them from foreign countries, I'm all for it. I think it is time to let our 'allies' pay for their own protection.

The U.S. has tried to maintain a force adequate to wage war on two fronts as needed. After the reductions, it is estimated we will have enough resources to wage war on one front and simultaneously be involved in one additional major skirmish.

So much for the U.S. being a superpower.

Our navy is now about 278 ships down from about 700 during the Reagan years. While Iran and China are both building Navies that are larger than ours. But the real problem is readiness. Us Ex Military guys kind of keep track of these things.

From a Military Times Article recently:

The 21-year-old flagship of the forward deployed Expeditionary Strike Group 7 was scheduled to depart several days ago for Cobra Gold 2012, an annual exercise with Thailand. The mission was scrapped due to an equipment failure.

“It is true, the Essex will not be making Cobra Gold,” Task Force 76 spokesman Lt. Richard Drake said. “The cause is wear and tear.”

The Essex, known as the Iron Gator, is scheduled to undergo a hull swap with its sister ship USS Bonhomme Richard next month.

The scrapped mission is the latest in a series of problems for Navy ships. More than one-fifth of Navy ships fell short of combat readiness in the past two years, and fewer than half of the service’s deployed combat aircraft are ready for their missions at any given time, according to congressional testimony."

And the Air Force is not a lot better off.

Having spent 20 years in the military, and some of those years Present in some of those other countries, I have a clue. We are protecting American interests. And if we were to come home as we did after WWI, history tells you where that would lead.

A benevolent Armed Force is a deterrent to the dictators that would overrun the world.

I believe Costa Rica depends on an american presence to survive. Chavez, and others would love to have us pull out. Castro as well I would assume.

And do you think if we pulled out of Germany, Russia would not make every effort to take it over again. And is building up again to do just that, given the chance.

And then there is South Korea and Japan. North Korea would love for our military to come home. And how about the Nationalist Chinese, and the Philipines threatened by China.

A small view of the world you have my friend. The only hope for freedom in the world is America and other Freedom loving countries maintaining a presence. Otherwise there are a lot of totalitarian governments waiting in the wings to take over.
