Pensioner, 73, shoots dead former classmate in revenge for locker room jockstrap prank more than FIFTY YEARS ago

A jockstrap pulled over his head in a high school locker room more than 50 years ago provoked a 73-year-old South Dakota man to fatally shoot his long-ago classmate, a prosecutor said Friday.

Carl Ericsson of Watertown, who last month pleaded guilty but mentally ill to second-degree murder, was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

Ericsson was charged in the Jan. 31 killing of retired Madison High School teacher and track coach Norman Johnson, who was shot twice in the face as he answered his front door.

Kenneth Meyer, the Lake County state's attorney, said Ericsson has indicated that the decades-old locker room incident led to the shooting.

Mr Johnson was a high school sports star and Ericsson was a student manager.

Beth Ribstein, Mr Johnson's daughter, said her dad hadn't spoken to Ericsson for years and it was puzzling that he held onto the grudge for so long.

'It was just goofing off in a locker room,' Mrs Ribstein, 50, said Friday after the sentencing.

Ericsson 'hasn't been right for many years,' Mrs Ribstein said, adding that he was envious of her father's success and standing in the community.

'He was just jealous of Dad his whole life,' she said.

Ericsson had pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in February and requested a jury trial. But Meyer and defense attorney Scott Bratland announced May 1 that a deal had been reached.

The first-degree murder charge could have carried the death penalty if prosecutors had chosen to pursue it.

At his arraignment hearing last month, Ericsson told Judge Vince Foley that he rang the doorbell at Mr Johnson's house then asked his old classmate to verify his identity before shooting him with a .45-caliber pistol.

Both Mrs Ribstein and Mr Johnson's older daughter, Terri Wiblemo, read statements during the sentencing hearing.

Mrs Wiblemo took the witness stand and immediately stared into Ericsson's eyes, opening with, 'I'm speaking to you, Carl.'

She noted that Sunday is Father's Day, and her dad each year looked forward to enjoying his favourite meal of fried chicken, potato salad and rhubarb pie.

'We miss my dad very much,' said Mrs Wiblemo, 52.

After high school, Mr Johnson played football for Augustana College in Sioux Falls and earned a bachelor's degree in education from General Beadle State Teachers College. He later received a master's degree from South Dakota State University and returned to Madison High to teach and coach for more than 30 years.

Mrs Wiblemo told Ericsson that her dad impacted so many people's lives in a positive way.

'But I don't know that you would understand that kind of goodness,' she said.

Mrs Ribstein told Ericsson that more than 600 people attended her father's funeral — including a member of Ericsson's family — and that her father was well-liked and respected by all.

'I can't blame you for being jealous of Dad,' she said.

Unexpected: It was at this home that Ericsson, who hadn't spoken to Mr Johnson in years according to his daughters, rang the doorbell and then shot him

Mrs Ribstein told Ericsson how much Mr Johnson loved his daughters, his grandchildren and his pets, and noted that Ericsson, too, was a dog owner.

'The night you shot him, his dog didn't want to leave his side,' she said.

Ericsson, in brief comments made after Mr Johnson's daughters spoke, said he would like to tell Mr Johnson's widow, Barb, that he was very sorry for what he had done.

'I just wish I could turn the calendar back,' he said.

Ericsson didn't address the grudge on Friday.

At his May arraignment, Ericsson told the judge: 'I guess it was from something that happened over 50 years ago. It was apparently in my subconscious.'

To support Ericsson's May plea, Mr Bratland had submitted an affidavit from psychiatrist Robert Giebink that said Ericsson has a long history of anxiety problems and suffers from 'severe and recurrent depression that is, for the most part, treatment resistant.'

Mr Giebink said Ericsson was significantly depressed and suicidal when they first met in January.

'Thinking was irrational. Judgment was impaired,' Mr Giebink wrote. 'He made the comment that he wished each night that he would not wake up in the morning.'

Sad-----but----I suppose he thought revenge is a form of justice? If he dwelt on the event for 50years??? he's been miserable for 50 years. Still is. Sad life. Probably the chap he shot had forgotten all about it??? He should have too-----not good. I wonder if they'll see each other again????

Bullies may love the attention they get from being cruel to others at the time and it may be easily forgotten by him. The pain and embarassment though can be carried by the one who endured it for a lifetime. Mr. Ericsson got what he deserved. I feel really bad for the Johnson family.

Wow, he really knows how to hold a grudge! I suppose that Carl Ericson must have traced his life going to crap back to the point that a "harmless prank" changed his life. Being in his state of mind, an event fifty years ago could be as fresh as yesterday. This doesn't seem reasonable, since there are always better ways to restart your life.

Johnson must have had one helluva rotten life to have allowed himself to be eaten up with that one childhood bullying prank. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone the pranking at all, but what man (or woman) stews over something for 50 years and actually acts on the anger, for pete's sake. Something terribly wrong with Johnson that methinks folks should have caught along the years and maybe that poor prankster could still be alive and well. What a sad, sad situation. Just goes to show you never can tell, can you?

Revenge is a dish best served cold, but this is ridiculous and tragic. That's a shame that Ericsson should have held such a grudge and been jealous like that and then to take Mr. Johnson's life like that over a childish prank from so many years ago! Well, justice has been served as best as it can with the life sentence. My condolences to the Johnson family..........this has to be especially hard since today is Father's Day.

I love that top opinion. The dead classmate gets shot. The English teacher would be so proud. But wait, let's not be too hard of the Sean, I'm sure he just was not concentrating on how he worded it. We have all been there.
As to the incident itself, how sad. Once again the availability of a gun made killing easy. It might not have been that quick of easy with a hunting rifle. I actually hope the shooter gets a off lightly and is given mental health care.

I'm sorry, but bringing in the availability of a gun into discussion of this situation is a tad on the ridiculous side. Hey, this is 50 years later. Hell, the man could have built his own weapon in that period of time! Save the gun arguments for when they're applicable. Johnson obviously has some mental issues. Gun control doesn't solve this kind of problem at all.

The article, while being in a British news release, is about a man in South Dakota USA. I believe their intent is to attack gun ownership here in America, by finding and printing any senseless acts of gun violence they can find.
