Pennsylvania Bans 'Bath Salts': Are You Concerned About Synthetic Drugs?

The world is seeing a rise in the availability and use of synthetic drugs, many of which are not illegal, just as reports emerge that the use of cocaine and heroin are falling.

Pennsylvania is one of about half of U.S. states moving to ban the easy to find synthetic drugs.

"If left unchecked, synthetic drugs could have developed into the most dangerous drug crisis since methamphetamine labs found their way into our state."

These drugs can be made to evade legal barriers, and can even be described as legal highs. Are you concerned about their availability or are they just another drug on the market?

I think we should abolish the FDA and make pharmaceuticals totally responsible for the products they sell. No more federal protection, no more banning out of country purchasing, and not more federal subsidies. Let the consumer decide what drugs they want to buy and from whom. Let free market reign.

Now we have a system that drug companies can buy the FDA to get their drugs on the market no matter how bad they are. The federal government protects the companies from huge lawsuits.

It the US were to kill 100,000 innocent people a year while bombing Afghanistan to kill insurgents would you be okay with that?
The government says 100,000+ die each year from cigarette smoking, but millions of other don't die and get pleasure from smoking. Is that okay with you?
Some government politicians want to ban all hand guns because they say 1500 are killed every year because of them.

Another example is the vaccine for cervical cancer. They want to immunanize 30 million+ girls for a disease that kills less than 4000 a year. 13% (130,000) of those will have bad side effects and 1% (10,000) will have life altering effects or death.

I don't know that the HPV vaccine is absolutely necessary, since woman generally get yearly screens that detect cervical cancer. As far as most other vaccines are concerned, I believe wholeheartedly that they save many more lives than they harm (most, not all). I don't disagree with you about the government protecting pharmaceutical companies, but I believe there needs to be some oversight when it comes to the American public, or a lot more people are going to die.

I don't believe the government can oversee the American public with out corporate involvement. The government is corrupt. Consumer watch groups work much better.

More and more there is evidence that the vaccines being given to the children in the US is what is causing 1 in 200 children to be autistic. That is not acceptable collateral damage.

That so-called evidence has been refuted over and over and over again. Wakefield was a quack. He's lost his lisence to practice. His 'study' participants were children at his son's birthday party. With scientific studies, you have to repeat the studies multiple times and get the same results to consider the conclusion valid. NONE of the subsequent studies could back up his claim. There is no connection between vaccinations and autism.

"A study scheduled for publication in the Pace Environmental Law Review closely examined public information on 1,300 cases in which the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program compensated families. Significant brain injuries were found in compensated patients as a direct result of vaccinations. Eighty-three cases specifically resulted in autism and are being called, “the tip of the iceberg.” May 23,2011.

If there is no connection why did the US government pay compensation over 1000 patients that resulted in autism as a direct result of vaccinations.

Vaccines, like anything else, can cause a severe and life threatening reaction. (like peanuts, bee stings, shellfish) The US has a program set up to help families that fall into this category. Of the millions of children vaccinated, 1,300 cases is significantly less than 1%. There are a lot of people who grasp at the Wakefield straw because they want answers.. but those answers have no scientific connection to vaccines.

1300 is just the amount of cases the government has paid restitution on. My question is if vaccines have nothing to do with autism why is the government paying restitution to 1000 of 1300 patients that claim autism from vaccines.
  • moonchild SAILOR 2011/06/27 17:59:59

I am not convinced that is an accurate number and that autism is what they are being paid restitution for.

There are NO studies that back up the ridiculous claim that vaccines cause autism.

Government pays for medical studies that show there is no links. mmmmmmmm I wonder how bias those are. It is also government that has spent millions to debunk any studies that appear different then their sponsored studies.
  • moonchild SAILOR 2011/06/27 20:22:33
    moonchild
No, independent, scientific studies. NO study has linked autism to vaccines. It's not just government studies, it's all susquent studies since Wakefield's junk science claim. Did you know he was paid to find a link? His study wasn't scientific. It wasnt even a study. His results were debunked over and over. His results were removed from publication and his liscence to practice
    medicine stripped.

BANS OF SYNTHETIC DRUGS WILL NOT WORK.

How are the powers that be going to ban synthetic drugs? There must be a very very large number of molecules that are psychoactive. They can't list them all. They can find them faster than underground chemists.

Enforcement is a problem, too. They can't assay unknown materials for such a large list of forbidden chemicals, Not with limited government budgets.

Banning them will not stop people from using them. Whenever you ban something, it makes that thing more desirable in some people view. I know it is killing people but hey - you have to thin the herd somehow.

Personally, no I'm not worried. Why? Because I'd never use them. Synthetic drugs are just that. Fake. If I'm gonna do a drug, it's gonna be the real thing. Not that I'm a user, because I have never used any drugs besides pot and alcohol. So....
I heard there was a synthetic pot, but I also heard you can't smoke much of it because it gives you a headache. Ewww.
I'm looking for a good feeling, not a bad one! That's the number 1 reason why I stay away from that synthetic crap.

I know that banning them won't work, and that it could even increase the number of people taking it. But the synthetic drugs are killing off people left and right. It's much more dangerous.

    These are potentially very dangerous.

I would prefer that there were a legal channel for these to be tested and accepted or rejected. Some idiot with a bath tub making drugs is scary to me. Often they can't do the formula correctly or don't keep the equipment clean and the second batch is affected by the pollutants remaining from the first batch and all kinds of unintended results can occur.

I'm concerned about the adverse effects synthetic drugs have on the body and what goes into making it. But I'm Just as concerned about the original drugs themselves. Trying to stop drug use by banning it OBVIOUSLY doesn't work. People continue to use meth and distribute it even after they see the damaging effects on the body. I think our government would be better utilized in fixing the drug issue rather then just throwing people in jail for it. Marijuana shouldn't be illegal, it is NOT a gateway drug!

So you don't use toothpaste, soap, bleach, pasteurized milk, cheese, antibiotics or any other "pharmaceutical drug", margarine or butter, ice cream, hormone injected meats (like what you get at the grocery store), gasoline or oil for your car, or any kind of canned food... to name just a few.

Most of the synthetic drugs are Marijuana substitutes... and MARIJUANA SHOULD BE LEGALIZED as it is not a hardcore drug... we need to take a look at the effects of the synthetic drugs in clinical studies.... I VOLUNTEER to do this ;)
