Paying to Promote Your Facebook Status: Tempting or Turn Off?

You!
Add Photos & Videos
Have you ever posted an obviously brilliant Facebook status and been disappointed when nobody "likes" it? Or maybe you desperately needed to find a roommate, but couldn't generate interest among your friends. That could be because, according to TechCrunch, your status updates only reach 12% of your Facebook friends. Sucks for you, but it could work out in Facebook's favor. The social network is now offering users the opportunity to "highlight" updates -- that is, get them out to more friends -- for a price.

A test group has been given the ability to promote status updates by clicking a "Highlight" link underneath the status they want to push, right next to the "Like" and "Comment" links. Clicking "Highlight" initiates a pricing and payment window that informs them how much it will be (something like $2) and asks how the user would like to pay. It's unclear exactly how much this feature highlights posts, but it apparently makes them visible to more people for a longer period of time, and pushes it higher up on their news feed. Facebook says it's just an experiment to "gauge people's interest in this method of sharing." So, we've got to ask: are you interested?

Two bucks...for likes? LIKES? Likes are not even that important. Most likes ive got on a status are 20. But how messed up do you have to be to spend money, for the possibility that SOMEONE will like your status? Cause maybe everyone will hate it. And there goes your money.

I'm not so insecure that I need my friends to validate my freaking status update with a reply. lol That's pretty pathetic. However, it would be different if it were a profile to promote a business or a good cause, then I could see why one might want to 'push' their status.

omg that is so retarded! facebook gets stupider and stupider all the time.. but I suppose they got the idea from myyearbook's "spotlight" feature which uses a premium credit to put your status on top for a short while.. but it don't cost 2 bucks and u can sometimes earn credits without paying cash.

Who ever convinced these fools that strangers really care about them or want to know where they are or what they are doing. Not one of them is important enough to have to be reached any where any time

I really wanted to vommit when I first saw this but I have to say it may have a purpose, albeit a small one. I have two friends who are trying to adopt and get the word out. That may come in handy for them. But in general if you're paying money to make people read about what you had for dinner or how hard work was you might want to keep the $$ and kill yourself instead. Now who do I have to pay to get some "raves"?! =)

The ONLY time I would probably ever use this is if to announce that the facebook user has passed away or something. And that is if I could have access to their account. You know, REALLY important things/news that people would actually care about.

...And it would also require me actually using facebook, which I don't.

How about making it so the status reaches more than just 12% of your friends WITHOUT having to pay for it, Facebook? It's not like you didn't DESIGN it so it only reaches 12%, is it.

Sounds rather pathetic and maybe a little self-absorbed... if people didn't "like" or comment on it, it didn't interest them, move on.

Gosh, who would get so desperate as to paying money to get more likes on your status?! I'd only do it if it were for a beneficial cause like a promotional ad for charity or to support a major group for something. Anyways, if millions of people were paying $2.00 per status, why don't we just use that money for something useful.

Sounds and looks like a turn-off...It is amazing how many people will actually shell out $1.80 per post to have their otherwise boring life in 'hightlights'...I could see using this function if I were advertising a job posting I needed to fill right away. Otherwise, Nah.

It's tempting for posts where I'm looking for an AV person or someone to help, not because I posted something just oh so brilliant.. really people? Do you need me to know you went to the movies and every other detail about your life?

Facebook is barely worth using as is. The only reason I have an account is to stay in touch with friends more easily. It's a matter of convenience over privacy and why would I pay FB to collect data on me!
