Paying to Promote Your Facebook Status: Tempting or Turn Off?

You!
Add Photos & Videos
Have you ever posted an obviously brilliant Facebook status and been disappointed when nobody "likes" it? Or maybe you desperately needed to find a roommate, but couldn't generate interest among your friends. That could be because, according to TechCrunch, your status updates only reach 12% of your Facebook friends. Sucks for you, but it could work out in Facebook's favor. The social network is now offering users the opportunity to "highlight" updates -- that is, get them out to more friends -- for a price.

A test group has been given the ability to promote status updates by clicking a "Highlight" link underneath the status they want to push, right next to the "Like" and "Comment" links. Clicking "Highlight" initiates a pricing and payment window that informs them how much it will be (something like $2) and asks how the user would like to pay. It's unclear exactly how much this feature highlights posts, but it apparently makes them visible to more people for a longer period of time, and pushes it higher up on their news feed. Facebook says it's just an experiment to "gauge people's interest in this method of sharing." So, we've got to ask: are you interested?

Uhm, NO! I am not paying people to read my status. If I want to get more attention, I will just TAG the friends I want to see it. And frankly, unless it is something I know my friends will WANT to see, why bother? Too many self-promoters out there, anyway. Get over yourselves.

First thing there is no such thing as a brilliant Facebook status update and secondly anyone who would want to pay to let people know you are going to Taco Bell is bordering on narcissism.

NO WAY!!! If people don't like what I have to say, it is their loss! (LOL) There are too many sneaky ways to extract our funds from us, and we don't need another one.

One thing that drives me nuts is everytime I try to open a link up comes this little bubble with "SHARE" in it. Just try to open that link and avoid the 'share' bubble. VERY annoying. How do I know if I want to share it before I've had a chance to look it over?

I have pretty much relegated my Facebook to a mere existence for the purpose of logging onto other sites that require a Facebook account. They can charge for anything they like :: I won't be using it.

Just another ruse for Facebook to make money, now from its users! They already charge the advertisers and make on ton of change from game developers. And we are told Facebook will be "free forever". HA!

No I wouldn't I think it is a stupid idea, and it would be very annoying if the update was something you didn't care about anyway. Anything to pull some money out of people's pockets, you would think Facebook wouldn't have to resort to that when they have their foot in just about everything on the internet already!

sounds like a tool for business ... not much for the average user ... probably will result in lots of paid clutter ... money maker for FB though ... lots of folks will pay thinking it will enhance their chances if too many pay it all becomes flat again

What crap. Paying for facebook for anything is a mistake. Overvalued, over saturated, convoluted, giant mess of a website.

Every site comes and goes. Myspace, Linkedin, were big sites that lost their presence. The same will happen to FB.

My first question has to be.. why is my status only reaching 12% of my friends?? I would assume it's because some of the friends chose not to receive status updates (don't really know if that's possible as I'm not a big fan of FB). At this point, the second question is how can FB push my status to those friends who it didn't reach? Bypassing my friends settings? There's an invasion of privacy! And.. why the hell would I pay anything on Facebook! If I'm lucky, I check in once a week. Love my friends, but so tired of reading how much spinach got caught in their teeth!

This is ridiculous. You have to be incredibly lonely or superficial (or a troll) to really care that much about whether or not someone reads your status update.

Absolutely dumb and just gives some sorry individual an excuse to spend money on getting attention. Does Facebook really need the money? That the real question.

There are plenty of extroverts who will go for this and make Facebook lots of money. At the same time they will ignore the policy of taking down posts that "might" be considered offensive, etc. That's Facebook doing so and not friends, etc., hiding or reporting posts they don't like. I've posted a couple links to current events articles and had a notice pop up that they might be blocked (by Facebook) due to content, even though said content was completely G-rated news articles.

You could just re-share your original post, if you're desperate. But people won't "like" it the second time around if they didn't like it in the first place.
