Paying to Promote Your Facebook Status: Tempting or Turn Off?

You!
Add Photos & Videos
Have you ever posted an obviously brilliant Facebook status and been disappointed when nobody "likes" it? Or maybe you desperately needed to find a roommate, but couldn't generate interest among your friends. That could be because, according to TechCrunch, your status updates only reach 12% of your Facebook friends. Sucks for you, but it could work out in Facebook's favor. The social network is now offering users the opportunity to "highlight" updates -- that is, get them out to more friends -- for a price.

A test group has been given the ability to promote status updates by clicking a "Highlight" link underneath the status they want to push, right next to the "Like" and "Comment" links. Clicking "Highlight" initiates a pricing and payment window that informs them how much it will be (something like $2) and asks how the user would like to pay. It's unclear exactly how much this feature highlights posts, but it apparently makes them visible to more people for a longer period of time, and pushes it higher up on their news feed. Facebook says it's just an experiment to "gauge people's interest in this method of sharing." So, we've got to ask: are you interested?

Can someone make something better than Facebook? This is sad and makes me feel bad for using Facebook.

Alright!!! Not only can I invite burglars to rip me off, by telling them when I'm not home, for a mere $2.00 more I can maximize the number of burglars I reach!!!

Technology is a beautiful thing when used properly like this.

If you're going to pay in money, why not just pay in time and CALL OR TEXT your "friends." ??!!

I really don't care. Though ... there was about a week or so once, when I was posting stuff on Facebook that maybe wasn't brilliant, well, it wasn't brilliant at all really. I am under no illusion or delusion that anything I post on Facebook is brilliant, but I thought somebody should have liked something. I just felt invisible; no one "liked" anything. So, out of desperation I posted a bunch of pictures of soldiers and kittens; pictures from WWI, WWII, Vietnam, both Iraq wars, Afghanistan and said "O.K. folks, you people have to like soldiers and kittens! Who the hell doesn't like soldiers and kittens?" But still, no one "liked" any of those posts.

But I'm way over it now. And I won't go to that place again. :-)

that is because either Facebook wasn't posting you on your friends' news feed, or it was due to settings of yours or your friends'. I have noticed that Fb only sends randomly to my news feed, and I get comments from friends on posts I would think would be their last choice to comment on, but it's the only thing of mine that the news feed sent them, and they wanted to comment/like me on *something*. and the more you post, the smaller % gets sent thru to your friends' news feed. So if you feel invisible, you should, because you were - so don't take it personally, you probably weren't just being ignored. how can we pay attention to what we don't see? they would have to take the time to specifically go on your page and check out all your posts. alternately, you could message them, or tag them in pictures or notes - according to their settings, they'll Always be tagged on that.

Thanks for that information. I didn't know that that could happen. It really was kind of weird. As i said, I generally don't post anything that is so brilliant that I feel people have to be compelled to respond but, but usually I get a a like or a nibble of some sort, on at least some of my posts, at least one, on most of my posts, but there was that time, a week, maybe even ten days, that I felt like I was just entirely invisible.

My kids are past High School, I will probably close FB since I now longer have a need to monitor my teens. Facebook has caused an increase in the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Sounds like it will soon be time to "un-like" all of the pages that represent the Facebook presence of companies that I like...I'm not interested in having my news feed be nothing more than all of the "highlighted" advertisements of businesses instead of actual status updates and fun links which I get from my friends. Because that's who is going to use this "highlight" feature...business FB pages, not personal ones.

This isn't meant to be for every status everybody post. It is meant for promotion, which is something you have to pay for whether in money or labor. Just because it's offered doesnt mean you have to use it, but it is brilliant for businesses who need to promote their product to as many people as possible.

90% of people use their status to gripe and complain. Heaven help us all if we have to be slapped in the face with it for days on end.

Generally speaking, It's stupid to pay for something that comes for free. And besides, unless you're a business venture of some kind, what can you possibly have to say that's worth paying to get it out there?

They should be paying the users instead with all the ADs that keep popping up on your page.

I could see in certain situations like if you had a band you wanted to promote. And the example of looking for a roommate was a good one too. But I could see a LOT of attention whores taking advantage of this and it might get annoying.
