Paul Ryan: Did Mitt Romney Make a Good Pick for VP?

Mitt Romney will announce Saturday morning that he has picked Rand Paul (R-WI) as his Vice President.. Ryan has strong support from Conservatives and Tea Party members. Ryan, only 42 years old, has strong economic and intellectual credentials. Ryan serves as chairman of the House Budget Committee. He has demonstrated particular acumen when criticizing Obama's economic policies and health care legislation titled Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare").

Romney's campaign has not announced the decision publicly, but insiders have confirmed the pick to the Associated Press. Romney's campaign plan also landed near Ryan's residence in Janesville, Wisconsin. Romney's son Tagg joined Ryan at the funeral of several Wisconsin Sikh temple victims.

The Wall Street Journal praised Romney's decision with an editorial which states, "The case for Mr. Ryan is that he best exemplifies the nature and stakes of this election. More than any other politician, the House budget chairman has defined those stakes well as a generational choice about the role of government and whether America will once again become a growth economy or sink into interest-group dominated decline."

What do you think of Mitt Romney picking Paul Ryan? Will Ryan make a good Vice President? Did Romney pick Ryan to avoid a wildcard like Sarah Palin in 2008? Should Romney have picked a woman or minority?

Probably a good choice. Romney needs to appeal to moderates in states like FL and OH to win. He has been unable to do that because most of the Republican conservative base doesn't trust him. If Ryan can get them off his back so he can move to the center, that will be a big help. The biggest risk he brings is that seniors have not been supportive of his ideas on entitlement reform, and that could hurt Romney in FL--a state he absolutely has to win.

How is picking Ryan going to make him appeal to moderates? Ryan is not going to get the conservatives off his back....Ryan just reenforces everything they stand for. So, basically, he has lost Florida (in my opinion).

I don't think you'll see Ryan campaigning much. He is going to be in the smoke-filled backrooms trying to get the conservatives to shut-up. His argument is that Romney is their only option at this point so complaining is just counterproductive. Since he is a fellow conservative they might listen, but I don't know if that will work. Romney's only hope though is to flip-flop one more time and come out of the convention with a media buy, the likes of which has never been seen in American politics, and try to convince the remaining undecided that he really is a moderate (while Ryan pacifies the conservatives.) That's going to be really tough though since Obama has the money to run counter-ads anywhere Romney goes--this isn't underfunded Santorum and the primaries.

In all likelihood, you are correct about FL. In that case, Romney has to get a light blue state. People will probably start talking about WS, but Ryan has never won in a statewide race there--I don't see it flipping.

Romney has been running for so long (at least 6 years) and has always been able to say, "I'll fix it in 3 or 4 months." It is easy to forget that 3 months from now the election will be over. While I personally think there is still the off chance that Romney might be able to close before election day, for the first time I think a serious person might say that Romney has probably lost.

really, what is the job of a VP??? ryan is a tough nut to crack, would have prefered Allen West, but Ryan also has the balls to stand up and say what people do not want to hear, and say it a hell of a lot more intelligently then Biden the clown

    Yes, but unsure.

He knows the finical issues of the country very well, BUT the media has been demonizing him for some time. So Romney has picked someone with a built in negative.

He is from a swing state, which might help flip it, but only for 10 electoral votes IF the state flips. He should have found someone from PA instead or Virginia.

In a one one debate with goofy Biden, he should win hands down, but then again he will be fighting a hostile media bent on protecting Biden.

We shall see, but I'll vote for a Romney / Puxatawny Phil team over Obama any day. Hey look, a popular figure from PA...there you go Mitt

No kidding- in a fair fight based on content, Obama would lose. But with the media more or less acting like a superpac for Obama, it sure seems like the only way we can get Obama out of office is to deal with him using his own tactics.

Ryan knows Obamacare in and out and a majority of Americans don't want it. Hit Obama right between the eyes with all it's hidden nastiness.

I was feeling so bummed yesterday over how stupid people are believing Obama & Reid's POINTLESS rantings- aren't the LOOPHOLES the problem? Not tx RATE? I was thinking, WHY isn't Romney focusing on what's more important than everybody's immediate graduation issues?---THEIR CHILDREN's FUTURE! The national DEBT!!! The value of the dollar! WOW, Ryan WILL make this ISSUE AND DO IT WELL!!!!

To give Ryan credit, he isnt afraid to make tough cuts in areas that will make him unpopular with a large portion of people. He does know the actual meaning of budget. The choice still doesnt make me like Romney any more though although it does show me he at least has some level of political common sense.

You bet I agree that Paul Ryan is the perfect running mate for Mitt Romney. Ryan was brought up just like Romney was, in a sheltered, privileged life that he had no want's or needs and plenty of money.
Just the opposite of what "Most" Americans are.
Paul Ryan spent most of his early years as a Ski Bum, and was inspired by book writer Ann Rand who has an atheist philosophy. It inspired Ryan so much that it’s required reading in his office for all his interns and staff.
Paul Ryan voted in favor of the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, which resulted in today economic disaster because of de-regulation of Americas financial system, your living the way you are today because of people like Paul Ryan.
Ryan voted in favor of the Iraq War resolution, authorizing President George W. Bush to use military force in Iraq.
Ryan voted for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, the Wall Street bailout that precipitated the Tea Party movement, and the bailout of GM and Chrysler.
Paul Ryan want's to cancel Medicare proposing that starting in 2021, the federal government would no longer pay for Medicare benefits for any Americans, and yet today (August 11, 2012 ) Ryan and Romney tell America they are pro-Medicare for Americans.

Ryan released his a new version of his Roadmap for America In late January 2010.
The modified plan would: give across the board tax cuts by reducing income tax rates; eliminate income taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest; and abolish the corporate income tax, estate tax, and alternative minimum tax. The plan would privatize a portion of Social Security, eliminate the tax exclusion for employer-sponsored health insurance, and privatize Medicare. Does that sound like something that is going to bennifit most Americans, "NOPE". But if will bennifit the wealthy 10 fold.
Paul Ryan's plan "would raise taxes for 95 percent of Americans.

So yes, I agree paul Ryan and Mitt Romney are perfect candidates to totally destroy everything America was built on, and they are going to tell Americans the opposite to get elected to office, like they are telling you today.
And stupid Americans will believe them untill it's to late to stop.

Too bad you're not as honest about how democrats fought regulation in the mortgage industry and allowed SO many people to get burned with over inflated house prices by flooding the market with buyers who were too high risk. Even Bill Clinton acknowledged this. I'm a dem, and I REFUSE to allow these idealogues and socialists lead me to IGNORE the obvious problems that WON the White House for Bill Clinton. The FACT of the matter is IF OBAMA was a old white guy, with the SAME CONTENT- he would be HELD ACCOUNTABLE for his addressing healthcare instead of securing the tax base FIRST! His foolishness is why things are so much worse. Look what Ronald Reagan accomplished with "the mess he inherited"- guess Obama felt securing healthcare and free birth control was MORE important- who cares if we can pay for it- right? He IS the POSTER CHILD of IRRESPONSIBLE attitude of "spent it now- pay for it later". Hold your own responsible too damn it!

Oh, but I am as honest. I think the democrats are just as corrupt as the republicans are, your right, the democrats had a chance to stop the bailouts, but they didn't, they had a chance to turn America around, but they didn't.
And the Republicans just sat on their butts and watched doing nothing about that situation like they were doing OK themselves, so let the average Americans get screwed.
Both republican and democrat have been trying to get America on track now for 200 years.............and look at where we're at economically ?????????

Time to change the political thinking to something new.
