I can respect parents that don't want their little girl wearing only pink or their little boy wearing only blue. A little bit of gender neutrality is a good thing -- not all little girls need to play with dolls, not all little boys need to love dinosaurs, bugs, or trucks.

But I've read about this baby in the link (his/her name is Storm) and the grandparents don't even know if they have a granddaughter or grandson. That is taking the concept of gender-neutrality WAY too far.

Not only pathetic, it is endangering the psychological development of this child. These idiots should be charged with child abuse and have the child taken from them.

I like the basic idea behind it, and I see issues that may arise in the future. Why should it matter what the baby is? People always say that they just want a healthy baby, and this couple proved it.

Gender is not something you can be neutral on. Its kind of a defining aspect of your existence.

for lack of a better term. i would've gone with "idiotic".

nature vs nurture should be discussed theoretically, not benchmarked for goodness sake! hasn't this social (*cough*) experiment been done already in the 1960's or something near then? i wonder if any of those kids ended up ok or just totally screwed.

Only because I believe they are carrying it too far. Not telling others what the baby's gender is, is an interesting concept while the baby is young. People tend to treat boys and girls differently, and I see nothing harmful about that part. But when a small child has TOO many choices, just not sure it's good for them, and we don't get to "pick" our gender.

I say pathetic i guess, if there was another option i would have chosen that over the 2 above. Though there will be something that the child will learn from there parents because they have been put under a certain gender, but the real deciding factor is going to be what the child thinks when he or she is older and has its own opinion on the matter. so i guess if anything i dont care because both in my eyes are pointless until the child is older.

I am on your side but there is no reason to call other people stupid, just because you do not have the same opinion with someone on this matter does not mean you wont in others. and also its just a respect thing

I consider it progressive, because if pulled off as intended, they might just uncover what actually shapes our gender identities. It might just produce a man who's masculine rather than chauvinistic, or a woman who's womanly rather than lady-like.

I see an inherent flaw in the process, in that the parents themselves actually know the sex of the child, this is going to introduce inherent biases, preventing gender neutrality from actually manifesting in the home. But by not exuding any conscious statements there won't be as many pre-conceptions or misconceptions forced upon the young child's mind either.

Another possibility is the parents are keeping it secret because the child is a hermaphrodite and they want to know which parts actually work before deciding which parts to cut out. (This is more likely than you think, because birth certificates are a matter of public record, and if there is no sex on the birth certificate, then there has to be a medical reason.)[Scratch that: Them be Yeah-hoos who didn't even use the hospital]

That is true and unfortunately that decision must lie with the parents (if they have both sets of genitalia) but you can never be sure you are making the right/best choice for the child(unfortunately).

Honestly, that is just messed up. You shouldnt take your childs gender away from them because they will probably end up being really messed up when their older. Let them live a normal happy life rather then one with questions and insecurities.

Isn't it going to confuse the child later ,or are they letting it in on the "secret"?
