Palin in the Green Room
NEWSWEEK's Karen Breslau shares a personal moment with the Alaska governor.

Newsweek Web Exclusive
Updated: 2:11 PM ET Aug 29, 2008

When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin arrived backstage for our NEWSWEEK Women & Leadership Event in Los Angeles last March, John McCain had just wrapped up the GOP nomination. Palin had yet to endorse McCain—she liked Mitt Romney—and as we waited in the green room, I urged her to "feel free" to make some news on stage. She grinned broadly—looking back, I guess it was a grin of the Cheshire Cat variety—and thanked me for the offer.

Once onstage, together with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Palin talked about what women expect from women leaders; how she took charge in Alaska during a political scandal that threatened to unseat the state's entire Republican power structure, and her feelings about Sen. Hillary Clinton. (She said she felt kind of bad she couldn't support a woman, but she didn't like Clinton's "whining.")

Little miss super conservative has no standing to make a judgement call like that on a woman like Sen. Clinton. We will see who the whiner is, she is being used.

Wow, that was the longest 2:25 I've seen in a while.

It's like she had nothing really to say about Hillary, so she just repeated the same things over and over again. Is this the kind of thing we would have to look forward to if McCain/Palin wins the Whitehouse?

Hillary said that she wasn't going to attack Palin, and then this inexperience, small town, hockey mom, turns around and say something like that. She's out of her league, when it comes to Hillary Clinton, and if she was smart, she shouldn't start making enemies, if she's looking towards making a career in politics.

The big difference is that Hillary can deal with it, and doesn't whine, unlike her campaigners making a big deal about putting lipstick on a pig. If the shoes fits, Palin, stuff it in your mouth!

Now, can we talk about timeline vs. time horizon?

Obama policy for a timeline for getting out of Iraq. The GOP response was ridicule and questioning his patriotism. Maliki (the government of Iraq) formally requests our troops leave and request the same timeline. Days later the Bush Adm agrees to a time "horizon". Playing semantics while people are dying in a war?

A bit off topic, if you'll allow me, once we have been asked to leave a country by a duly elected government of a sovereign country (especially when we argue our reason for being that country is to bring democracy to same), we are not "liberators", we are, in fact, occupiers.

Yes, but we have't been asked to leave today, their contry would fall apart if we did. Time horizon in that sense was not semantics game, but a differing policy in terms of set dates versus developmental goals.

Yes, we may very well leave sooner than later, when the Iraqi troops can support themselves.

They asked us to leave and our government balked, then later began to talk horizon in terms of when in response the the Iraqi pubic insistence. It is what it is.

Is it not the Iraqi government's call as to when they feel their troops can support themselves? We do not run the Iraqi goverment, or at least one would hope not.

I don't think she is using the 'whiner' term as an 'insult'. It seems more as a perspective note as to how some have seen the situation.

She acknowledges Respect and Admiration for Hillary's strength to be firm and to push her goals. The whole vid must be taken into perspective.

oh walden, the pond is so full of naive minnows.. thanks for some realism.

the broadcast, as Kay presented it, displays a definite pause.. ie tampered.. so the context of the slur is questionable at best.. the slurs not ever from the lips of Palin... blah blah blah.. a typical smear tactic by Kay, that blew up in her face on her own poll, unless she's now populated it with fellow bots..

Actually, it's not. Give it time, not only is Gustav holding up the GOP convention, it's giving the country to vet her appropriately. The MSM will no doubt pick up on these stories. Then we shall see.

If this is going to blow up on anybody, it's not going to be Kay.

And about the "fellow bots" remark... go get yourself a glass of moose juice. That's what I hear you're all drinking these day.

Your video lacks any proof of your claim, which makes this an absurd poll. Besides, Obama's campaign called Clinton something to that effect.. among many other unsavory missives. If you can't stand up to being called a whiner, you certainly don't have what it takes to be POTUS. As a former Clinton supporter, precinct captain, and delegate, I can tell you that Palin and McCain have my vote.
