You're correct we used to have pride and manufactured goods ... before Reaganomics trickle-down theory and the push for free trade by the corporate oligarchy took over.

Under Carter, people were at work and productive. They were buying homes --not leaving them under the threat of imminent foreclosure as many, perhaps, millions are doing now. That was not the case under Reagan who destroyed the trade unions, exported jobs and technology, and plunged the nation into a depression of two years ---the very worst since Herbert Hoover's Great Depression!
Ronald Reagan justified disastrous economic policies with a ideological nonsense called a 'trojan horse' by his own budget director, John Stockman. 'Trickle Down' theory was, in fact, a ruse that might have worked in a completely "closed economy". In reality, the US imports goods from abroad. 'Tax cuts' to non-productive, American elites who outsource jobs abroad will only squirrel away his 'tax cut' in a safe haven beyond the reach of the tax man. It is money that will never trickle down. It is monies lost forever to investment inside the United State. It is the mechanism by which the GOP has made of America a third world nation. It is the mechanism by which the axis of Reagan/Bush destroyed a once great nation!

The One we had , they invented the term Misery index for , just a combination of unemployment and inflation .
Jimmy Carter achieved an unmatched record of 21.98 misery rate.
Inflation was double digit under Carter .
I recall reading an news article , a single job for a elevator operator and 1,000 people showed up to apply . A riot broke out . I recall applying for jobs and standing in lines 50 and 60 men deep under Carter.
Buying Homes ? not much , the interest rates by banks were it 20+% range . Prime rates were ( prime rate is bank to bank )

Reagan Took over a nightmare situation . Regan rebuilt the military ( recall the horror of the wrecked helicopters under Carter ( Later Clinton cut the military again , Bush I depended on Reagan's legacy for the defense of Kuwait )
Reagan was able to arrest the momentum of the Carter decline and turn things around . Clinton was perfectly willing to accept credit for what Reagan had begun building . Which started sending us back to the Carter decline , leaving Bush II with the impending 911 massacre at the World Trade Center. Which brings to the current decline of the Obama train wreck. Like going full circle back to Carter .
