I have handled several pits and I find them to be wonderful loving dogs. No, they should not be banned.
The Pits and Boxers also have a universal blood type that 'fits' with most other dogs.
What should be banned is people that make dogs fight or don't know how to handle that breed.

Why kill a dog for its breed? It is the human who turns certain dogs into dangerous animals. It is a shame that it is always the animal who has to pay for human faults!

Maybe one might have to get insured but I would have to see some stats that proved they were killers as often as some claim before I would even think about getting rid of them. I have seen mean ones and I have seen sweet ones. It is often the owner who makes them mean. Maybe we can do away with those owners and keep the dogs.

Lennox was a family pet who never bit or threatened anyone. Belfast City Council let the animal warden keep him in isolation for two years in his own feces.

"the animal warden keep him in isolation for two years in his own feces."

That is awful. Don't you guys have any type of SPCA to watch out for stuff like that?

I'm not Irish. There are millions of us around the world who tried to have the dog returned to his family, to save his life, to force Belfast City Council to let him be re-homed somewhere else. The council was relentlous at all time.

Oh I do want to be clear. If a dog or any animal becomes a man killer and is just set with blood lust (this is very very rare) I do think it is ok to put said dog down but only in rare cases where there is no other way. I think this is something that is going to be so rare as to almost never happen these days. I also feel that is a dog is wild and also attacking/killing farm and ranch animals then it is ok to shoot the dog. Mind you I grew up working on my dads ranch and while we had many dogs we loved we also had the sad job of having to shoot wild dogs. People will let the dogs out when they move or the get out and go wild. It happens. It is sad and I never shoot a wild dog with out a tear. If you have not worked on a ranch this is likely hard to understand. Dogs do go wild.

Lennox never bite or threatened anyone. The police came to the house to "drop by." They sat around had a few cigarettes then whipped out a tape measure. They decided that Lennox had "agressive pit bull measurements & took him away. The city kennel kept him in isolation for two years in his own feces. He was a five year old beloved family pet. At the end of two years Belfast City Council not only condemned him to death they would not let his family come to comfort him. They would not even give the daughter his lease. The owners did nothing wrong whatsoever.

Lennox's owners were VERY responsible. They got him all his vaccinations, they got him registered every yeare. His famly is a mom and a little girl who did everything right and did not deserve this. Lennox NEVER showed any signs of agression. Please get your facts streight before you say such things.

Unfortunately, the dog is punished for the owner's mistakes but we can't put down poor pet owners.. Every Pit/pit mixed we''ve had has been an excellant dog...

I just want to know one thing, where are all of the BSL advocates today? Shouldn't they be celebrating the death of this dog? Your legislation worked.

No but it is wise to look at dog bite records and dog attacks before getting any dog. Pitbulls enjoy a very poor record in that department - they were bred to be aggressive fighting dogs so genetically they have a propensity to attack. Now, spare me all the stories about sweet pits - I have heard them all. I look at their stats and their stats are not good.

Applied Animal Behaviour Science, with researchers questioning 6000 dog owners had some surprising conclusions.

The dog breed most likely to bite was not the Pit Bull, Rottweiler, or German Shepherd, but …wait for it…the Dachshund. And second was the Chihuahua, followed by the Jack Russell Terrier.

Best check with insurance companies - they keep the real stats and, trust me, savage attacks are not done by dachshunds, terriers or chihuahuas. Any outfit call Applied Animal Behavior Science is not even in the ball game.
