Riiiiight... that's because he was busy doing the Daytona 500 pre-race show, Barney (the giant purple newt) 2x, the Karla Faye Tucker movie, Anderson Cooper, Weapons of Mass Deception, ESPN, Hannity & Colmes, Where in the White House Is Miss Beazley?, Paula Zahn Now, O'Reilly Factor (3x)... with those credits, why would any respectable show want him on?
Letterman shoots between 5pm and 7:30pm, by the way (and they often shoot 2 shows on the same day)... I would hardly call that "late night" - though it was too late for McCain in 2008, and he had to take a nap and fly back to DC instead.
