Question US

Osama Bin Laden condemns EU over Muhammad cartoons. Should this threat be taken seriously?

Grace W. Bush March 20, 2008 17:15:14

Great! Just what we needed. A new statement attributed to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden condemns European countries for siding with the United States in Afghanistan and for allowing the publication of cartoons considered insulting to Islam's prophet, Muhammad.

Part of terrorism is to keep you guessing. Our country's biggest mistake was arsing around the mulberry bush instead of sending covert ops to blow this wack job to his band of merry virgins in the hereafter.

Yes. We just never know when he might strike again.

I think he is capable of anything. However, hopefully, since he is stupid enough to announce what he is going to do, we will all be alert enough to stop him and his minions. That is the key-not to ever let our guard down. If we do that, we'll be ok.

Remember, there were 8 years between the 1st World Trade Center bombing and 9/11. It takes time to plan those things out.

Between '91 and '96 he bombed two hotels in Yemen targeting American troops. There was an attack against the US military in Riyadh in '95. The Khobar Towers bombing in '95 (also against the US military). The bombing of 2 US Embassies in Africa in '98. The USS Cole in 2000. The WTC bombing in '93. And of course 9/11. Bin Laden has been a busier A-hole than most people remember.

He wont stand and fight till death. He'll run off and hide, wait for things to cool down, then he'll be back.

His last masterpiece was 9/11/2001. I think we should worry about him.

That's true, but I was talking about the attacks here. That probably takes more planning because it's so far away and we are looking all the time.

If you are implying Clinton did a bad job, he never just ran away like Reagan pulled all of our troops out of Lebanon when the barracks were hit. That could have emboldened him. There is enough blame to go around. If it had been Bush, he would have bombed Lebanon. If Bush had really been concerned about Bin Laden, he wouldn't have let him go in Tora Bora..

I think you may have misunderstood me. I am by no means bashing Clinton and letting Bush off the hook. As much of a Republican as I am, Bush and Clinton BOTH missed chances to get bin Laden. They both had the mindset to care too much about what their actions would cause the world to think about them. Bin Laden attacked the US. Period. Why should the US care what the media, special interest groups, and Europe think about us defending ourselves? Even after we tried to please everyone by not raining fire on bin Laden and Al Queda, all three of these groups still think America is evil. We should've kicked bin Laden's ass each chance we had.

Maybe I am just too defensive of the Clintons, but I am tired of all the Clinton bashing. I appreciate your explanation. You are right, you can't please everyone, but I do get frustrated at Cheney saying "So?" when he is told that most Americans feel a certain way about something. He seems to think he is a dictator and nobody has called him on it. Also, you don't attack a country for what terrorists do when they aren't even from that country.

I, also get angry when people say, we don't want anymore dynesties after they voted for both Bushes and W. twice. Therefore, what they mean is "We only want one dynesty." I'm sure in a few years they will vote for Jeb or one of the other Bushes coming up(maybe Billy another time.

If your gal Hillary gets in there, we'll have a totally new type of dynasty. In a few more years, Chelsey could make it three!

It's funny how we all think that everyone is bashing our man. I've seen just as much Bush bashing as you've seen Clinton bashing. It really does go all ways. Obama has received his fair share lately too.

Back to the subject at hand, I really don't think Bush and company intended for the whole Iraq mess to go the way it did. I really think they had good intentions. However, no one in the administration knew a single thing about Muslim history, and I'm sure that they also didn't really understand what's seriously going on between all of the players in the mid east. It's quite clear that Clinton and his group didn't get it and it's clear that Bush Sr. and his group didn't get it.

I'm reading a book called Marching Toward Hell by Michael Scheuer. He was in the CIA through Clinton and Bush, and it really provides some insight into the whole Middle East soap opera. There's a lot of stuff that most Americans (including our government leaders) do not know. It's really opened up my eyes and made me think about our government. I highly recommend it to anyone who is smart enough to understand it (it's not easy reading like a Stephen King novel), and who has...

The reason I Bush bash is because he is an embarassment when he talks. He can hardly put a complete sentence together that makes sense without reading it. Also, he talks to us like we are incapable of understanding the middle east when he, obviously, doesn't understand it. Also, the only way he became president was through his father and having a dirty campaign against McCain. Also, getting the Supreme Court to go his way in 2000.

As far as the book is concerned. I accept your challenge. I just finished "Brave New World" am am in the middle of "Next", Michael Crichton. When that is finished, I will check out "Marching Toward Hell". I'll let you know.

You are so right. Clinton had 10 chances to kill him. Bush had one great chance to take him out right after 9/11. Our leaders are just too worried about what the international community will think of us. Never mind the coalition, allies, the media, and painstaking debate when it comes to protecting national security. Just go in when you know where he is (like the day after 9/11) and scatter his mug all over the sand in tiny little pink bits.

Sorry, I get a little carried away when it comes to this subject.

LOLOLOL no Bubba Bu$h let his oil buddy bin Ladin hide. The bin ladins and the Bushes go back three generations in the Carlyle Group. Bin Ladin attacked this country and killed 3500 people in N.Y.C. and the Pentagon. On Bush's watch. Even though Bush had memo's that is WAS going to happen.
We have the BEST military in the World and Bin Ladin is running loose, right now, not on Clintons watch, or Bush 1st watch but RIGHT NOW!!
You are confused when that blind cleric that bombed the WTC parking garage under Clinton's watch do you where that Cleric is today...he is in JAIL. And if all you are concerned about are making sophmoric titilating sexual comments instead of solving real problems you are the epitome are what's wrong with so many just like on the Right. So, Bush was a mindless victim (hmm. there may be some truth in the mindless part) There were memo's and intelligence available to Bush. Every Day!! He was on vacation a lot back then as well, look it up. There was total GOP control in D.C. They were briefed on the last 8 years, (they also lived through it) They had the CIA and the FBI reporting to them daily and they blew it. You guys love to point fingers and blame rather than fix problems.

You're right that Bush had plenty of intelligence on bin Laden. But he basically had the same mindset that Clinton had. Bin Laden declared war on the US in 1996. He declared war on the US basically because the US was occupying the "Two Holy Places". If any one in the US Government had done some research into Muslim history, we would've realized that we should've taken him seriously. Bill Clinton certainly must have taken him seriously after bin Laden really started raising hell, but like Bush at 9/11, didn't want to offend anyone (the Hollywood elite, the media, European countries) by attacking bin Laden.

This entire mess we're in should be blamed on our bi-partisan governing elite.

Alexis, I hear what you're screaming. I'm reading a book called "Marching Toward Hell". This guy Michael Scheuer, an ex CIA, talks about everything that let up to this, and surprisingly, it can be pointed toward almost every elected government official in office (Dem and Rep) since Reagan. I am a huge conservative, but George W. had a chance to take out bin Laden right after 9/11, and he didn't do it. He spent an entire month trying to get approval from the international community. By then, bin Laden was in the mountains. Arggg.

The Khobar Towers bombing in '95 (also against the US military). The bombing of 2 US Embassies in Africa in '98. The USS Cole in 2000. The WTC bombing in '93. The CIA knew exactly where bin Laden was numerous times during this era. Each time the evidence was presented to the Executive branch, the decision was made to not attack, with the exception of one time. That one time, they decided to bomb the place at 3 in the morning so that they wouldn't kill any innocents. Of course, at 3 in the morning, bin Laden wasn't there.

Source: Marching Toward Hell by Michael Scheuer. Scheuer does NOT place a lot of blame for this whole mess on Clinton. The blame goes back 35 years on the bi-partisan governing elite in Washington. Bill gets his share though, just like George W.

You are right that Billy Bob was afraid to take out bin Laden, but I think it was 10 times. However, as much as my Republican ass hates to admit it, George W. had a great chance to take him out too. George spent an entire month after 9/11 trying to put a coalition together and trying to get Congress' approval before going into Afghanistan. We should've been in there on 9/12 when we knew exactly where he was.
