Old Glory Will Forever Fly

maggiemay 2012/06/30 04:13:45

I’ve had my share of wins and losses, but one thing I can never lose —
one thing that grows stronger with time — is my love for America.

As
did my father, I followed this nation’s flag to foreign shores, proudly
wearing a military uniform in service of the greatest, most powerful
country on earth. Every day, I salute the flag that draped across Dad’s
coffin. It is the flag that will drape across my coffin … the flag that
will be properly folded and presented to my daughters. It is the red,
white, and blue American flag — symbol of freedom and hope around the
globe.

I thank God every day that I was born in the land over which that
flag flies, and when my time comes to rest in her soil, I, like my
father, will be honored to have Old Glory draped across my coffin

My favorite actor, John Wayne, who himself is one of the most
enduring symbols of the American spirit, never missed an opportunity to
stand up for his country. In a narrative entitled “America, Why I Love
Her,” he chronicled some of the reasons for his undying devotion to the
land of the free and the home of the brave … the land that celebrates
its birthday every July Fourth.

The Duke’s reasons are among the countless reasons all real,
patriotic Americans should cherish an abiding affection for this
hallowed land:

“Have you seen a Kansas sunset or an Arizona rain? Have
you drifted on a bayou down Louisiana way? Have you watched cold fog
drifting over San Francisco Bay? Have you heard a bobwhite calling in
the Carolina pines, or heard a diesel’s bellow at Appalachia’s mines?

Does the call of Niagara thrill you when you hear her waters roar? Do
you look with awe and wonder at her Massachusetts shore, where men who
braved a hard new world first stepped on Plymouth’s rock? And do you
think of them when you stroll a New York City dock?

“Have you seen a snowflake drifting in the Rockies, way up high? Have
you seen the sun blazing in a bright Nevada sky? Do you hail the
Columbia as she rushes to the sea, or bow your head at Gettysburg at our
struggle to be free? Have you seen the mighty Tetons? Have you watched
an eagle soar? Have you seen the Mississippi roll along Missouri’s
shore?

“Have you felt a chill at Lake Michigan when, on a winter’s day, her
waters rage along the shore in thunderous display? Does the word “Aloha”
make you warm? Do you stare in disbelief, when you see the surf roaring
in at Waimea Reef?

“From Alaska’s cold to the Everglades, from the Rio Grande to Maine,
my heart cries out, my pulse runs fast at the might of her domain.

“You ask me why I love her? I’ve a million reasons why: My beautiful
America, Beneath God’s wide open sky, over which … Old Glory will
forever fly.”

Jimmy Reed

Maggiemay... My dad parachuted into the city of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II! He was a surgeon who volunteered in 1st Army to attend to the call of rendering services to many who were gravely injured! When he slowly came down from exciting the plane, he was shot three times by German riffles..... yet when he landed, he demanded to treat others more needy of his expertise than he!

I laid him to rest at Houston Memorial Cemetery with an Honor Guard of fellow vets by my side! I have his flag incased in glass... it makes me so very, very proud to show anyone who comes to my home!

So, so many of Old Glory flags fly honorably over our land! But the most loving one of all to me..... is the one that was handed me with a "Thank You" when I buried my dad! I'm sure it would love to fly high in the wind over any tall structure around. But for some reason, I believe it is content in where it is stationed? :) Old Salt

    Thank you, maggiemay, that's beautiful.

I sincerely hope your father was laid to rest in "due course" and not because of his service.

Yep! We have been through so much in this country, and during our lifetime. We can handle just about anything that they throw at us.
It's time people decide what kind of country they want. There are 2 clear options. Choose wisely.

Those that have no respect for this country or what it has been through maybe need to find a country more suited to them. There are many to choose from.

When I read this I was very touched by the story that Mr Reed wrote, and about the beauty of this country. With all the things that have been happening I thought it could be some good food for thought with the 4th of July coming up.
We may bicker, and fight, and call each other names, but deep down we all love this country, but sometimes need to be reminded that we have been left as stewards to protect, and serve our country, and honor all the ones who came before us, Who left us this wonderful place we call home.

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about the call currently going out to fly the flag upside down this July 4?
  • maggiemay jubil8 ... 2012/07/01 04:36:00

I guess everyone has their right to do what they want within reason. I personally would never fly it upside down. I've heard a couple of people mention it, but I didn't know it had gone that far.

Those of us who have ever had the PROUD honor to "serve" our country in battle, jubil8, NEVER feel our service days are finished! For when we take that pledge, that pledge never ends just because we leave our honor on the battlefields.... it lives with us until the day we die! :)

"I, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Please note... DEFENDING the Constitution of the United States comes 1st! :)

We sure could use some patriotic public figures right now. It would be nice for our children to see examples of people who were proud to be Americans and proud of what America stands for, instead of the constant teaching of American wrong doing and her faults. American has been, and still is a great country, and I hope that the America I have always loved will be here for my children when they grow up
